^ Hillmanjames - I have been offered a cute 60s estate, if that turns up I am planning to sell the Hunter or take it off the road for a while so I can do a few mods to it I'll also be looking for something sensible* to use as a daily... *sensible = something equally impractical for me, maybe a convertible or a modern estate or something in a nice colour Blue skies, sun is out, we must be in Wales again I do a lot of my driving in Northumberland and Yorkshire. I thought some of the roads there were a bit narrow but driving around the local tracks in Wales has been a real education

Weeding the garden (or "how to catch a herd of escaped Triffids" ) I promised a mate I would help tidy his garden, my results below are from a couple of hours on Saturday and a couple more today. The bits in the red circle are triffids ( or possibly elder), what you can't see is a slightly smaller bundle of the same stuff not in the photo. For scale, the panels on the floor are 8 foot long. The branches in the photo have been cut to manageable size but some of the cut bits are still about 10 foot tall ! ( higher than the 1st floor windows in the farmhouse on the left) When I started on Saturday, you couldn't see the ground or the barn . We also found a fairly healthy plum tree about 10 foot inside the garden, complete with a good crop of plums Red circle shows some more captured triffids It's fairly simple work using big loppers ("gardeners bolt-croppers") but quite rewarding when you see the results. I'm disappointed that chainsaw my mate had left for me wouldn't start, expect a chainsaw & some nettles in the next episode !

More fun, this time fixing an up-and-over garage door that was jammed at one side. Spot the difference between the snapped cables that got taken off, and the new cables that went on Difficulty rating : 4/10 (using the very helpful guide the supplier emailed with the order) Fear factor : 8/10 (knowing how much power there is in the big spring that is wound up so it can hold the weight of the door !) Top marks to the folk we got the parts from ( GDS - "garage door spares") , they sent the right parts and were happy to answer questions from folk (us ) who know very little about fixing garage doors Tips : read the instructions before starting ! Make sure someone is within shouting distance in case you need help, or to hold the door up while you look for the vital bit you've just dropped Have beers ready to celebrate when you're done ! A bonus was getting to play with a trike I knew was in the garage but which I'd never seen because of the jammed garage door. Once the door was fixed and could be opened safely, we got the trike out and went for a quick run along the coast. Happy times.

I don't build engines but have you checked the thickness and depth of both sets of rings? If the groves in the pistons are different depths or the grooves are wider you won't be able to swap the rings.

^ I'm in an odd situation for a few months - I don't have a lot of storage space at present but there are very few days before September (October ?) when I'll be at home for anyone to collect them. I should be home for 2 days at the end of this month, 2 more just before RRG, not sure after that. Easy options for me would be to collect when I'm at home, or I take to RRG and we try to sort something out on the day (I'll be camping all weekend - maybe also on a stand on Sunday)

Hi, A couple of ideas that.might improve your chances : Offer to do the striping and cutting out the problem areas for anyone who offers to do the welding (makes the welding easier) ask on the normally helpful mig-welding-uk forum (unlikely but you might get lucky) Barter? If you can't afford to pay a lot, can you trade some of your time or skills ? Hope you get sorted

I would guess selling it as a box of bits is the least attractive (least valuable) option. Add suspension and wheels so it can be rolled onto a trailer makes it easier for buyers to picture it together. Bonus if the engine is in place, even better if it runs. - or break it and he the expensive bits make it worthwhile. Personally I'd like a big jigsaw of nice clean car parts to play with, but I'm not like most other folk

A bit late - I've just noticed the car in the Caprisport photos has lowering blocks fitted Their system will reduce the "flex" in the springs near the lowering blocks (as said by fad ) My logic still thinks the front spring eye is a more solid mounting point for the triangulation

cheers georgeb My plans are still changing but now look like : Arrived in Wales today for about 10 days working holiday. Return home on 31st to hand the key back (the rented place I moved into last month has just been sold !) Fly to Denmark / Copenhagen for 2 weeks holiday starting Aug 2nd just in time for the Copenhagen street racing (see link below) Return to UK 2 days before I need to drive South for RRG and a weeks touring holiday. Then MOT the car ASAP, find a house ( possibly Alston / Lakes for September, then Tyneside for October). No plans past that yet I'll be based just outside Copenhagen when I'm in Denmark, happy to meet up at the racing if you decide to make the trip retrorides.proboards.com/thread/194191/foreign-motorsport-event-next-year 8-)

Hope the port project works out - it sounds like you're not the only one trying to move it forward If you get spare time (ha!) and want some ideas, there's a comedy western "Wild Wild West" from 1999. It's fine for late night viewing after a few san-Mig, and has a train that can run on tracks, roads, and has legs for the off-road bits www.yify-torrent.org/movie/32095/download-wild-wild-west-1999-1080p-mp4-yify-torrent.htmlI'm sure the cannon at the front is optional, but if you have a spare one that works why not use it?

I saw Golf Turbo - I'm guessing diesel?
My old Sierra 1.8TD had a couple of tries at this, many months apart. #1 cruising happily on a long motorway run at 70mph then clouds of black smoke and it just took off. Lots of hard braking eventually stopped it. #2 similar but the brakes wouldn't slow it so I turned the ignition off, it stopped but killed the pump. Fitted a replacement pump and the problem never happened again. Dodgy pump or internals in my case.
Mine would run happily for months below 60mph, but long runs at 70mph put it in the "danger zone". Scary stuff !

I just checked on a map to see where Goodwood is - the directions said "South Coast". Top marks for organising it but the distance rules it out for me. ( the demographics make it a sensible location, but for us Northern types it's a long way and far too warm when we get there) Have fun

I'm onto my 3rd Hillman engine, they all like to drink (lots of) 20/50 so I normally stock up on cheapo 5 litre / 1 gallon cans if i see it on offer. Price is more important than quality due to regular oil changes and high usage. 1L bottles are only bought if I'm away from home and it needs a top-up.

The brake light switch is pressure type The pipe Mike fitted to fix your "burst" pipe goes into a cast block, this connects 4 brake pipes + 1 gizmo (with 2 wires coning out) The less-technical term for the gizmo is a pressure-operated brake light switch. Pull the wires off the gizmo switch, turn on the ignition, and if you touch the 2 wires together the brake lights shouild flash. It's difficult to tell from the angle of the photos but start by looking at the green (and maybe brown) wires. Electrics can be hours of educational fun for children of all ages. Enjoy Results so far are impressive, it has to be good for your mojo to see such solid results happening so quickly !

I've been using this as my daily driver for about 6 years, recently got chatting to somebody who will be selling "something cute" in the next couple of months. If that happens, the Hunter will be going up for sale. Questions : What's it worth / is anyone here interested to save me putting it into storage or gumtree / ebay etc? (form an orderly que) Viewing possible at RRG end of August or in North Wales until the end of July. Yes I have an idea of what I've spent getting it the way it is now, yes I have an idea of what I'd like for it, but let's start with what the forum thinks (99p on Ebay is not an option ) Build thread <suggest you read this before asking questions> : forum.retro-rides.org/thread/88892/hillman-hunter-estate-racking-milesPotential modifications : forum.retro-rides.org/thread/196874/tech-notes-hunter-mods-dailySpec : V5 is here in my name, MOT is almost due but I'll be re-MOTing it before RRG, historic (free !) tax, cheap insurance. Original 1725 motor with sweet overdrive gearbox, radiator had recent recore with heavy-duty matrix, new starter motor last year. Ultra-reliable but has back-pressure (piston rings?) and oil light flickers when hot (bearings? sender unit?). Engines often turn up cheaply, £20 is common - I got offered a "good" one for £80 last week and turned it down as too expensive. Brakes & suspension are very well sorted (brand new front calipiers & rear cylinders, new rear shocks, rebuilt front struts, new joints & bushes when needed), good tyres. Body : rustproofed from new, oil leaks from lots of places since have topped-up the rustproofing ! New (unused!) metal wings fitted, I replaced the sills when I got it but they are looking shabby now, body is basically solid but getting a bit crusty in places. Doors are decent but not 100%. An ideal base for a modern engine swap, a quick tidy-up of any crusty metal, then repaint. A very easy "rolling restoration" or daily driver.
