Just to keep this useful thread updated No-claims discount is normally "lost" if not used for 2 years. Case 1 : Classic policies normally ignore any no-claims discount you have. If you are only going to be insuring a classic for the next few years, ask your classic insurer to record how many years no-claims you have when you take out the classic policy, and to confirm again if/when you stop insuring a classic and want to insure a modern car. Doing it this way meant my *lots* of years no-claims was "kept warm" ( the phrase the insurer used) so I could use it on a modern daily recently after several years of classic-only insurance. Case 2: I had my NCB in my name, SHMBO had her own, and we were sharing a car for a few years. Advice from the insurer was for me to insure it 1 year (with her as a named driver) and her to insure it the next year (with me as named driver), so neither of us lost our NCB after 2 years. Lancaster insurance - see below for a recent discussion, some happy customers - some not so happy forum.retro-rides.org/thread/198484/lancaster-insurance

Pickings are slimmer here in Northumberland. Not always true - I spent a long time with a lass who lives in a camper van and often forages for fruit + veg, and found plenty "up north" I also got educated about how to spot un-molested Saxon farming fields when driving past them (look for wide ploughed trenches, and very square corners on the field - the road often follows the fields boundary ), there are a few nearby worth visiting I made a start cutting the trees in a neighbours garden today ( cramlington NE23 ) and found the 25ft tall tree has plums on the top branches I've pruned. Have lived here for 10+ years and never knew it was a fruit tree The elder next to it has made decent cordial in the past, now loaded with elderberry if anyone has a recipie (or come visit and harvest - your - own ) Nice work on the jam !

From my Nisan days ... If the item is off the car you can use a hydraulic jack. Jack on the floor - housing above - new bush above. Slide the whole lot under the car/chassis and jack it up. The weight of the car presses the bush in Was told to avoid washing up liquid as it rots rubber (contains salt?)

Interesting question, I'm curious to see how others feel about it Having had in the past (and recently again got) examples of "option 3" motors (silly power, excellent predictable handling, often restricted to 155 mph !) I find "Option 1" more fun With well set up low powered cars I find I can push them near their limits in the corners and braking, often surprising a lot of "better" cars - all within the speed limits To push "Option 3" cars, I need to go on the track or to the continent Motorbikes have a different "vibe", for them I'd propably go for option 2 (but I'm happy with any !)

i enjoy diversity of this forum, being old enough to see the birth of the internet they are also the original social media, i see them as a huge technical resource... i find it also serves as a perfect diary for your own reference, i literally used one of mine today to look what rear wheel cylinders i bought, in order to help someone else shopping ^ Bingo I use my build thread as a reference for myself as much as anything else, I'm always happy to find it's been useful for other oddball folk who have adopted a weird Retro like mine

^ I have a soft spot for Mk1 Cortinas I got a full set of clocks and gauges from a scrapper, then bought my first Mk1 to fit them into I see no reason why you can't get the 1100 dashboard then get the rest of the car to suit

^ Bump as I've just found this thread when I was looking for Retro-friendly Insurance suggestions. I was with them 4 years, changed to somebody else this year (have been meaning to do it for at least 2 years but ended up taking the easy option and just renewing). I found them very unorganised, poor in the event of a claim, I have no confidence in them. When the windscreen on my classic got broken, the windscreen repair place told me fitting a new screen with the old screen rubber would leak so they wouldn't gaurentee the repair. Lancaster said they would pay for a new rubber when they replaced the screen - then decided the rubber is a consumable item that I need to pay for (£90) if I want it changed. SHMBO was a driver on my policy, she bumped a car when parking. Lancaster paid out to repair the other car (eventully), but told me they would write my car off if I claimed (damage to mine was a plastic clip to hold the bumper trim in place) I have a "can drive other cars" option, I asked Lancaster to confirm if the car I borrowed needed to be insured by someone else for me to be legal. I got 2 definite answers from them ( 1 "Yes", 1 "No" ), I'm still not sure if I was driving illegally when followed their advice with a borrowed car ! My annual premium has gone up about 50% every year (same car, no claims etc), with no reason other than "insurers often change their prices" When I moved from a high-risk to zero-risk area I expected my premiums to drop - they didn't, their response "at least it didn't increase" Last year they sent me 3 different renewal invites - each had a different cost but they couldn't explain why. I decided to take my classic off the road, got a modern daily 6 weeks before the policy ran out and swapped the last 6 weeks of the policy onto the modern daily. I recently received this years renewal invite, cost has gone up 50% but they are unsure which car they have quoted for - they think it's the classic (not the modern daily they know I have been using for the past 6 weeks)... I rang a handful of places and got the classic insured with A.N.Other for 60% less than the Lancaster quote. It takes a lot to make me change if I have something that works - I changed away from Lancaster

When I was working on the barn roof, a couple on pushbikes stopped and asked to borrow some tools to fix their bikes. Lots of fun was had "testing" their electric mountain bikes to check they were working ok. Nice toys! We had a quick chat and I got invited to call at their holiday home the next day to look at a few jobs. I explained I'm officially homeless and working away from home until the end of the month so it helps if I can get accomodation as part of the jobs I do. They were fine with that so I had a look around - it turns out they have a spare "granny flat" I can use to do work at theirs next time I'm in the area An interesting bit at one end of the main house Lounge Bedroom Lovely people, and I'm grateful to them for giving me a tour of their home - regardless if I end up doing any work there. I love this type of building, loads with character and sympathtically brought up to date. In other news, it looks lilke I will be settling back in the North East next month, so if anyone Tyneside/Northumberland needs a hand just let me know

As I was in Wales, I called past the triffid farm to do a bit more tidying up. Shame the owners chainsaw refused to start, so I resorted to using my *big* cordless drill with a auger (big corkscrew) bit to drill the tree trunks Just perforate all around then snap the trunks at the dotted line The gardcen looks a lot more open with the trees trimmed and some more weeding done (compare to the photos higher up this page is you're not convinced) The tidy-up also showed that the place has a happy population of Natterjack toads ! Cute but tiny even when full grown They have been having problems with the power supply at the farm so they couldn't finish roofing the "T-shaped" barn. Part of the arrangement for my visit was that if I bought a cordless angle grinder to cut the roofing sheets, they would give me them money for it. A day later ... Job done, everyone is happy, and as the folk from both my Wales jobs play in the same band, I got driven to the local music festival as their roadie on Saturday nite - which qualfied for free food, drinks, and I had a couple of interesting chats with the bar staff at the show. It sounds like there might be some jobs at the pubs next time I'm passing

More decking in Wales (on the way back from RRG17 - which is *not* a short-cut to the North East ) 3x2 frame, fitted on the short side to keep the deck height low. Decking now runs all around the garage and up to the back gate around the corner The Den fully kitted out with pinball machine, sofabed, mini-fridge, and (optional) Bassett hound. Very chilled ! The lady of the house also gave me the good news that she had ordered a gate to keep the dogs out - followed by "is it the right size?" <insert bang-head-here type smiley> Just find another spare pallet and it looks like it was made to be there Lady is impressed, the Bassett hounds aren't ! I even had a few bits left over to make a step to get into the tub When I was working there last time, I jokingly said all they needed to complete the cabin was some solar fairly lights. They fitted them while I was away and love the effect (shame about my camera-work)

Special mentions go to ... And also the very kind sponsors FTZ car parts who provided a VIP weekend ticket (including free food & bar) for the cost of a normal weekend ticket (tickets were bought by folk I know there in the trade who buy a lot of stuff from the sponsors) Lastly - if you get the chance to go to the Copenhagen Grand Prix anytime, DO IT !

Next stop - Copenhagen Grand Prix www.chgp.dk/ or translated to English translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=da&u=http://www.chgp.dk/&prev=search This is a road circuit around the city centre streets, side-roads are used as pits (with full public access to walk around). Too many photos to pick from but a few to give an idea 60s/70s Retros being used as nature intended (sideways around the city 1-way system) Lots of Retro-friendly stuff parked up around the venue edit = edit =
