Dual filament in the indicators? Bodge job mate. They're the brake/tail bulbs. Good to see an Aussie Marina getting some TLC and noting the differences between UK and Aus ones. You being in NZ are lucky/unlucky you got both varieties to play with! Strangely, I missed it on the wiring diagram, but as confirmed by another NZDM Marina, this is factory fitment. The rear indicators double as reverse lights! Unfortunately I'm finding that the local content is a pain to get parts for. I'm going to want to go through the brakes, but since its all AUS sourced stuff its much harder to get than the UK gear. Different! I gather the running gear may be a Ford/Leyland mix; I know UK front calipers are the same as on Mk1 Cortinas (thanks to EBC brakepads listings) so there are bound to be equivalents out there somewhere. If you are on the Book of Farces (if they haven't had another spat with another Govt anyway), have a look at this bunch, there are quite a few in Aus, UK and NZ. www.facebook.com/groups/379723898738924

A workmate of mine had one; it was a cracking car but even in the early 2000's they were a s*d to get panels for, especially after he clattered all four corners. That took two other fubared Cougars to repair. Good luck with this; they are an underrated and rare car!

I lose my MG ZTT in a car park now, it's lower and shorter than most modern cars (and some would say it is a modern car...)

One of my schoolmate's Dad ran the local Mazda dealership; these cars were brilliant in the day, just the usual tinworm self-destruct did its worst. He put away an RX2 for 'later on' - when they retrieved it, from their old paint shop, it fell apart.....

That reminds me of when I did my gas-axe course at Ipswich Wagon Works back in the day, practising cutting the heads off rivets or huck bolts without touching the base metal and blowing the rivets out of their holes leaving them ok to re-bolt. We were given a scrap 16t mineral wagon to practise on; after two days of cutting, the wagon was still standing where it had been shunted, so an inquisition started to what we'd been up to. An 03 had arrived with a rake of demics, so I asked them to shunt the wagon - which promptly disassembled itself when the match truck hit it..... it was the rust and paint holding it together!

Yes, you can get a Marina/Ital to shift quite rapidly; I found the best way was to drive it like a FWD car (lots of weight at the front) but with RWD (slidey, slidey). Kept up with a Pug 205 Gti one day - he wasn't happy....

Why was the 1.3 Marina even a thing? Was there a tax advantage in buying/driving an underpowered pig? I like Marinas but seriously, why? Can of worms opened...... On the surface, the idea of using a pair of boat anchors as engines seems daft and to a degree it was, but, it all came down to economics in the end. The Marina was designed by Roy Haynes who drafted the Mk2 Cortina and did the 'flat front' Leyland designs (Clubman, Maxi etc). His team came up with a novel idea of making all structural panels multi-use, so by adding or subtracting panels the 'chassis' could be tweaked to accept all manner of engines and suspension packages and allegedly, six floorpans would have given BMH the complete range of cars it needed; but, the Government stepped in and forced Leyland Motors (Jaguar, Triumph, Rover)to amalgamate with British Motor Holdings (Austin, Morris, Riley, MG, Wolseley etc) and create BL. Out of all the back-stabbing and power play (which royally annoyed the Unions, hence the aggro in the '70's), only the Marina went into production and lost its BMC drivetrain to a Stanpart (Triumph) one (to keep the Dolomites etc viable) and the E series engines that Australia got, were binned for the old A and B series to keep the BMC side happy (and MGB's with engines!). I gather the 1750 TC with the E series goes rather well, as does the Red Six......

just be a bit wary with these as they are the last knockings of the 'handbuilt' sportscars - the shells were built at Mayflower and shipped to Longbridge for completion, so some of the fit and finish really depends on what presses had been used for which run (look at a line-up of F and TFs, taking note of wing/bonnet lines....)

Only just caught up with this; really impressed to see an eighties car getting the treatment it deserves! Dad had one as a company car; X reg 1.6L in metallic grey. Whe he retired in 1986 they scrapped it as the engine was utterly shagged out and used more oil than petrol, but what a car - I learnt to drive in it belting around farm tracks and fields. The 1.6GL I had as my first comapny car was 'tired' as well but went like stink, apart from the rear brakes being a bit over-zealous in the damp......

How the hell did that get its last MOT; Stevie Wonder?? Seriously, good find though, get on some MG forums and there should be some help there. Now I've decided not to strip my F for the van, if there is a world left after this Government has finished b*gg*ring about, I'll repair it and run it next year.

1) If you want an electric car, be prepared to pay through the nose for it very soon as the reality of producing batteries in enough volume hits home (but then again, there is that big dry lake of lithium in South America that no-one has touched yet, so....) 2) It will get cheaper to buy motors to fit a drivetrain into existing cars thanks in no small part to Elon Musk's egotistical control of Tesla cars; you crash one, they will NOT allow you to use it as built but have put in blocks to certain parameters which make the car unviable. So, that is why Ebay is awash with Tesla motor packs for about £1800; and that willgo down as the number of fubared Teslas goes up. 3) Autonomous cars will use 5G technology to communicate and navigate, which is why there is such a headlong rush to fit the damned stuff to everything and everywhere. The science behind it is rather shonky and questions have been asked by the US Congress over its actual safety and so far, I believe Russia has banned its use for anything other than secure military communications. Add to that some Huawei-based dodgyness and ....NOPE ..... 4) Hydrogen isn't really a starter as it costs so much to produce and store, befiore its even used. Brown's Gas, on the other hand, mixed with a 'fuel' could be a stepping stone to future power reserves.

Finally got the wherewithall to make some space in the workshop, so the engine got hoiked out of the trailer and fitted to my engine mount ready for rebuild, quickly losing the power steering pump and drive belts and some other extraneous bits off the side. Quick look up top found it was a later coil pack engine with the later cambelt tensioner so I'm not sure its from a 216 coupe, unless its a really, really late one. Eventually a rumbly belly and Barley The Dog giving me the "I WANTZ TO GO WALKIES" look finished activities for the day; at least if the weather falls to bits I can disappear into the workshop, shut the door and get on with stuff! (Got shot of the PS pump simply because the K Series weighs a tad more than not a ruddy lot so I don't think it will be needed...)

Best laid plans and all that....I really didn't want to strip the MGF (Golden Shot) and things conspired to prevent that anyway. So, a few calls around t'interweb found a few viable options, one being an hour's drive away. Once I'd bolted a tow hitch to my ZTT and wired it all up, then sorted the old trailerboard out (scrapped it and bought a new one - cheaper option in the end...), Me and Mrs Me headed off to the depths of Norfolk to retrieve a 1.6 engine and gearbox from a Rover 216 Tomcat coupe... which ended up with three ECUs, a Maestro radio, drive shafts, wiring loom, various other bits and the engine and gearbox. It had been left in a damp shed, but seeing as I will be stripping it for new gaskets, seals and belts anyway, thats not a problem and the gearbox is a better option being a cable operated clutch one set up for a FWD car; it also has the adaptor for the speedo drive instead of the sensor so that may be rebuildable to cable drive as well. Now I've just got to get shot of the Class 37 intercoolers in the workshop (I was waiting a sodablaster to clean the ends properly before resoldering again) and I can get on.
