Thank you everyone for your input and suggestions. it has actually led me down a path that i did not think of. I am opting for a Honda K20a with a manual BMW ZF box from a E36. Easy to see 200bhp in N/A and with the bmw box its a nice short RWD package that should take some hammer. Feel free to comment on this or take the thread further with other suggestions for different users. Thank you again. Fantastic engine, better than the F20. Tris, is the K20 or the F20 the one that spins backwards? Or is that only B and D series? Honda noob here

Hope you’ve don’t bottom end bearings... What a wierd thing to say.............. I give up ... carry on............... Whoops autocorrect! Meant to say hope you’ve done them. The BXE is fine once they are done every once in a while. Yet to blow up a PD, no matter how hard I try (currently at 2.4BAR ) You’re obviously a TDI lover too. Almost drive nothing else at this point, though my latest foray has been a 2.0 TFSI unit.

Tempted, except: ECU choices; how many do PD engines bar using a factory ECU and cirmcumventing the immobiliser or tying the key up somewhere? 'Box choices? This may not be as bad as I think. Oil; They are super picky on oil IME and I personally have owned one with camshaft & tappet failure, which is more common than their 'bulletproof' suggestion would make out. Even VAG themselves updated the follower design many times over its life. Only VW505. 01 or 507.00. Many people will put in 505.00 as it's cheaper even though VAG themselves say not to use it. Price : They've never been cheap IME. Even I managed to sell an engine with 250k on it for £550! That was when the going rate was £1k. But yes, they do tick many many boxes . You will only ever need the factory ecu.. The imobaliser can be removed on remap however personally I would remove the transponder from the key and use this some way for added security.. The oil is not a problem,if you are spending time and money on a project the last thing you should be doing is skimping on lubrcant.. Of course if a motor has been overly abused/neglected mechanical week links will show, some vag tdi's are stronger than others..( folk tend to drive a diesel as they would a petrol and over revving is not good for valve gear 3k and change gear..) I have a 1.9 PB with the BXE engine code renowned for pushing holes in the block.mine has just cleared 250k miles and has been mapped to 150bhp 45 over standard... Since the pd is one of the most popular conversions into offroad 4x4's etc the transmisions are a mear hurdle... As for price? loads are about mostly 130/150 mk4 golfs and boras buy the full car brake and scrap . buying engine or conversions off the floor is definatley the wrong way to go.... Hey each to there own but I would choose derv over petrol every time .. Alternative fuels more torque and less to go wrong. If you drive a diesel the way they are meant it plenty smiles for miles... Hope you’ve don’t bottom end bearings...

cant believe nobody has offered an opinion on tdi? vag asz pd easily 200bhp and will feel alot quicker with the extra torque and as you mentioned "bullet proof" the earlier ve tdi's from vag like the alh or afh will run forever and a day with propa care and will return awesome mileage. I’m biased as I have several tuned PD TDIs. Currently daily has 240bhp and only nozzles away from 280. And will still return 55mpg if driven carefully. And this is all on standard internals.

Sorry to spam jamesfuller I’ve an orange BRM front snout here from my old one long gone. Where would I shift it on? Sam There are some Rover buy sell pages on Facebook, Pride of Longbridge page also has a sales page, probably where I would start. Where bouts are you and how much you looking for? This is the thing, based in Ireland. Bought it from the UK years ago and its just sat there. I’d rather it went to someone who would use it.

Noughties - Rolls-Royce SIlver Ghost Teens - Ford Model T Twenties - Duesenberg Model J Thirties - ‘32 Flathead Ford V8 Coupe Forties - Cadillac V-16 Fifties - The Mini Sixties - Jaguar E-Type Seventies - MK1 Volkswagen Golf Eighties - Peugeot 205 GTi Nineties - Ford Escort RS Cosworth Most of these sprung to mind when I think of a particular decade. Some were technical marvels, and some just were an average car that sold well. A few of those would be in my stable! Lucky enough to have just one, the Deux-Cent-Cinq. About time I got to restoring it. Poor curse word has been sat there for three years now untouched.

That takes me back! We had an 89 saloon Carina diesel. Couldn't kill the damn thing with a half million one the clock. Ours had the blue velour which gave you a static shock every time you got out

Wish that I had disposable cash, been after a tank era Mercedes for a while. That would be epic with an OM606T in it

Speaking from experience, Good MK2 rolling shells are getting harder and harder to find for reasonably money. In 2011 I paid 200 quid for a 99% solid shell, painted and ready to go. Now a rotten one is going for a grand a half decent shell is 2k here. If you don’t want to weld it, get someone to do it. I think that there is more satisfaction in keeping a decent machine on the road. Hence me welding my mates old Focus this weekend. Horrid job but apart from that it’s immaculate and cleaner than most 9 month old cars, it’s almost 19 years old!
Take it a bit at a time.
Use the time to figure out ways to improve the engineering of the car as it goes back together. Always yields good results.
Oh and 270 odd horses on a standard compression engine, great result. VR holds my vote for the third best sounding engine in the world.

I’ve just bought a full 4Motion (Haldex) conversion for my B6 Passat. The entire rear end (top, bottom and spring arms, trailing arms and ARB, and diff mounts) are all Powerflex purple bushes. At the moment everything up front is OEM VW, am I expecting an interesting ride? I am running KW Variant 2 coilovers, and these ride better than standard.

Have to say I like the Passat. Top spec, and the VR engine is lovely. I’m biased as I have a diesel one.

Mercedes CDi? Renault dCi? Vauxhall CDTi? Those seem to be the worst candidates for leaky injectors with the horrible black wibblepoo they spew! Saab tid ! Its horrific ! Bosch injectors ! Ah yes, the Vauxhall 1.9. Famous for it. Are you replacing injectors? We had a batch of wibblepoo diesel a couple of years ago and it wiped out a full set of injectors on a mates car, one at a time. Painful to change.

Always jealous of this and what you paid. I’ve still a want for an early W140, the tank style Mercs are so cool and timeless

Mondeo 1.8 TD goes straight in AFAIK. Endura DI (Focus TDDI) is doable, with a bit of wiring to do.
