I echo Dave! The more you get into them, the more they p155 you off! I've had over a dozen, from 1951 split that I did nothing with in the 7 years I owned it, to a 12-second drag car. Best one I ever had was a 1970 1300. So original it was untrue, bought it just at the right time as it needed a pair of heater channels and some lower quarter panel repairs but had never been welded except for one front bumper mount. I got it with a set of 4.5" and 5.5" Sprintstars and no engine for £825. Built a 1641cc motor, did the welding, cut and turned the front beam and replaced the window rubbers, and drove it everywhere. Loved it but sold it for about £2200 to fund more race parts. Buy something honest, preferably without previous repairs. Study how they're put together - most repair panels are carp and pay no attention to original weld lines. I spend more time modifying the repair panels than actually fitting them.

Nice to be reunited with an old car - my wife has just sold her mk1 Golf cab back to a previous owner. Not who she bought it from, but the one before that! He's dead chuffed, and has agreed to offer it back to Em if he ever decides to sell in the future.

The way I've read it is that cars solely powered by petrol or diesel won't be able to be sold brand new by 2040. We'll still be able to buy second hand (i.e. retro!) Petrol and diesel cars. We won't be forced into purely elctric vehicles. I see it as a push more towards hybrids, of which I envisage two sorts - the first type with electric motors and an IC engine working together so the car decides on the best combination of power supply, and the second type being an electric vehicle with a built in IC generator that will run at a constant speed to top up the batteries but not contribute to powering the vehicle at all. As Darkside says above, there will be a move towards bio-fuels so I can see these new hybrids being able to burn pretty much anything. Watch out for all this around 2050 as the government of the day misses target after target (at least that won't change...)

Do the PAS now if you've got the parts. I think we'll need to do a conversion on a friend's mk2 - she came off a motorbike and damaged her shoulder really badly. Don't think she'll be able to drive it much with a manual rack. You never know what the future holds.

Its more about where are you going to mount the batteries and the extra weight etc By 2040 you should be able to pickup a Tesla for cheap at the breakers though - should be fun There is a guy in the States who has put a Tesla drivetrain in the front of his stretched VW type 25. This was a couple of years ago, so quite an early Tesla.

I've heard of an apprentice having the zip of their overalls welded up last thing on Friday afternoon while said apprentice is still in them. Also heard of an apprentice having a broom handle shoved up one sleeve of his overalls, across his back and out the other sleeve, before being hoiked up 20ft in the air by the overhead crane and left there over lunch. Fibreglass resin slapped all over a workmates balls was apparently common on their last day at work before their wedding. Dilemma of try to get it off hot and risk spreading it further or wait for it to set and having scorched balls and having to rip your pubes out. Best one was the apprentice told to collect all the sulphur from match heads to play a joke on someone else. Apprentice sits in the lav with a piece of foil on his lap, using a Stanley knife to scrape the pink flammable bit off the matches and into the foil. Apprentice gets good at this and starts speeding up and up. Eventually the knife gets warm enough and fast enough to ignite one of the matches, which gets dropped into an hour's worth of match head shavings. When the fire bell had stopped and the roll call had been taken, apprentice is found with no eyebrows or lashes...

Front number plates!! If motorcycles don't need them why do cars? Typical government/dvla double standards! I annoy myself with that. It really bothers me when I see a car with no front number plate, usually with it tucked in the front window (and a sticker put vertically down the side of the windscreen too!), but as soon as my car is MOTd mine comes off until next year!

When I was 17 in late 1994 I was looking for my first car. Dad is a bit of a petrolhead too, and I was just looking for something to modify, with his blessing (and help!) Saw a Mk2 Escort Supersport on a dealer forecourt for £800. Was all set to have it until I got an insurance quote. £1600 for third party only, not even fire and theft! As parents said they'd buy the car if I taxed and insured it I had to leave it where it was...

A friend of mine drag races a Beetle. It has a one piece fibreglass flip front, rear parcel shelf has gone and is replaced with aluminium, obviously no interior except for roll cage and seat, engine bay entirely removed, spun aluminium race wheels etc. When he was at a local static show with it, an old boy tattered over and having looked at the number plate, remarked to his wife that it was his old car that he'd bought new in 1967. Ian was expecting the "you've ruined that" or "what the hell have you done" conversation but the guy loved it!

On the plus side it's a flat screen torsion bar car, so a '68, '69 or '70 - I'm pretty sure the finger cutout for the filler flap is '68 only. It's a genuine Karmann-built car too, not a homebrew! On the negative, that means it's still swingaxle, which is nothing horrific but IRS is a nice bonus with US '69-on cars. More problematic is the roof - they can be very expensive, especially if the wood inside has rotted.
I'd want to see A LOT more photos of the sills. They have the regular Beetle heater channel, plus a strengthener underneath and radius pieces in the corners. They all rot. I bought a 1970 Karmann Cab for my wife many years ago, on a Q-plate, we think from Portugal. The body twisted when the doors opened. The one doorpost wasn't connected to the sill. Therear quarter panels had over an inch of filler in them. The sill strengtheners were just sheet steel crudely folded and tacked over the floorpan bolts. I ended up drilling out spot welds and melting lead to split the Karmann metalwork off and put it into a better shell. I overpaid a little at £800. The car is currently spread over a couple of garages and hasn't been touched for several years, but I should really get back on it as she wants it done for her 40th in a few years time!

That's a shame about that beetle - it looks like it was a Jeans special edition. I like reading about your 106, it's nothing radical but it's clear you love the little thing!
