heres the scenario , I needed a bog basic , simple to look after but most of all CHEAP commuter shatbox. didn't have anything particular in mind at all but it had to be half tidy (ie not rotted in half) with a longish mot and cheap to run. after just missing out on a honda jizz off ebay the good lady of the house spotted a peugeot 106 on arsebook selling pages this morning...by 3 oclock it was mine , a rather tidy '98 3 owner local car with (a seemingly genine-ish) 63.000 miles , its a 1.1 independence 3 door and photos will follow when its not absolutely chucking it down. what is it they say about not buying cars in the rain??? so I find myself with my first pug and unintentially nearly a retro to boot , it needs one or two bits and bobs sorting but first impressions are that after a 40 mile drive home it pulls like train in fifth and is wonderfully bog basic with barely a squeak or rattle. I had a quick look on ebay to guage general prices of spares...un-be-bloody-lievable ...£32 for front discs/pads/fittings , i think I'm going to like this!!
* does anyone have an interior light unit for one of these kicking about , as far as I can see its the only thing missing? (other than a speaker in the drivers door , glorious mono fm)

Cheap motoring means you can have a Crayfish Thermidor starter followed by an inch thick sirloin and the large portion of Ben and Jerrys Phish Food.
Looking forward to pics and more details.

I'm breaking a phase 1 1.5D at the mo i'll grab the int light before it goes i also have a pair of cheap speakers i put in it when i got it (both OE ones where split). I'm in N london if your near enough to come collect ? the parts are free if any good to you? I have another 1.5D now so i kept the less rusty of the 2 the int is knackerd as i use them for collecting scrap lol Check the rear arch area behind the top of the tyre! they love to rot there ! 3 panels overlaping makes a nice haven for the rust to fester unseen, once it pops out in the boot or the arch it's a pretty big job to sort it out especialy if it's spread to the rear seat mounting area the metal isn't that thick on em! They do shift don't they, pretty dam light by modern standards! even the non turbo 1.5 doosal shifts for what it is, keeps up with my sons 1.25 fiesta

I have found one unexpected bonus...an indoor swimming pool! ill pull the back seats out tomorrow but the soundproofing under the boot mat is out and gone , it was totally shot. happily the boot floor is shiny mint so that's a start. is there a likely candidate for a starting point to look for water ingress in the boot/under rear seats?

Rear light seals leaked on mine, take the air vents/wheelbrace holder out the boot sides and there's a 2nd thumb wheel to remove the light cluster, i made new seals out of an old camping bed mat (i keep a roll in the yard for exactly that use) also the hatch seals can come adrift/loose and the water wicks under it and into the boot, also the sunroofs can need resealing to the roof skin? i dropped the rear seat and got a a mate to hose the car (or do it in the rain) and trace the trickle back to source (a light coat of talkenpowder can help trace the route as it's washed away by the leak)

noticed today ?(?now that It finally stopped raining) that the sunroof has already been siliconed shut but I'm not arsed about that , I will go around it again and also around the frame to roof skin. tomorrows job is to gut the back end right out and dry it , pull the lights and all seals and start from scratch , chuck the boy in the back , wollop the hose on it and see what we got!

If its been siliconed shut then the drain plugs have blocked and most likely now rotted out. Typical of 106's and Saxos

well here it is an all its 90's nearly retroness...the worlds only 106 mpv...part swimming pool , part builders van , part dog kennel. at least that's my best guess after everything I hoofed out from its innards today! P1070392 by peter strike, on Flickr I managed to gut , dry , clean , re-seal seals & lights on the tail end and generally remove the all pervading "odour de dead dog" from the old thing today so its been quite a productive day. I didn't have my phone with me to take any piccies but it was pretty minging under the rear seats and the funky afro effect on the rear shelf was hilarious but a blast with a Remington clothes de-fuzzer soon sorted that out. plans for the clunker?...a pair of tyres on the front and an oil change and drive it for starters. mods? first ones done already , a vanilla tree air freshener and recycled f.o.c rubber mats , other than that it may get a head unit at some point but that's probably about it.

yay....finally road legal...barring a couple of "very borderline" front tyres that are being changed on Wednesday (cant see they were any less worn a month ago at mot...or the shredded wiper blade .. but hey it must have been one of those "agricultural mot's!). but... £150 for 12 months tax now...robbing b'stards , doesn't the government know that this is supposed to be an uber low budget car?? mind you I must stop looking at stuff like this on the intereb...I must I must I must.

today has mostly been spent discovering new life forms under the front soundproofing. worms , slugs and a massive amount of an indeterminate foul stinking slime were all under there , hence the car still smelt so minging. it was just as wet up front as it was in the rear , the old felt was totally lunched , so after that had been scraped off the rubberised top layer I replaced it with 3mm acoustic laminate underlay left over from a diy job ready to go back in. the old tub had obviously been taking on and holding water for a fair old time but front floor pans are as shiny mint as the boot floor was. on the plus side it is definitely smelling sweeter now and I'm £4.11 up on the deal in loose legal tender from behind the seat runners. its slime....but not as we know it jim! photo storage

with everything now fully dried out , all livestock removed , interior cleaned and refitted and smelling a little less like a festering abattoir , it was time for the really important stuff , free upgrades. a pair of rockford speakers I had kicking around replaced the ferked one in the passenger door and the single most important upgrade on any zero budget motor , make it look faster (ie add free Bullplop-hosepower) , RED STRIPES!! after hot air gunning the rubbing strips back to life a liberal sprinkling of red insulation tape makes at least 10mph/15hp difference.

one thing I didn't have lurking in the back of the garage was any tyres , so off to the interweb to search out the best deal for some very sexy 165/70 13's. the cheapest at ats was £54 a corner , local independent £40 and black circles (for something I had at least heard of) was £38.50 , so order was placed with blackcircles and fitting booked....AT ATS! go figure but at thirty quid saved I was happy. glad I had them done though as the fitter picked up that a previous owner had run one with loose nuts and the holes on that rim had elongated and started to fracture! (no pics , it was stowed away as a very emergency spare pronto!) I might buy a lottery ticket on the back of that!

I am pretty impressed by the little thing ,it drives really well. just about everything on it does what it should and having been all over it I can find no corrosion other than a couple of tiny patches of very light surface fluff above the spare wheel that a flick of waxoyl on a brush will sort out. the tyre fitter today knew his pugs and was impressed with the condition it. I just need to get some miles on it as it has been used on a really short 2 mile commute for the last couple of years , so no weldathons , big hp engine builds or tarmac worrying lows here...just a bit of tlc and a few low budget smiles along the way with a bit of luck!!
