Weather played ball today , so inlet off (after working around the effing non releasable quick release hose couplings...any advice on how to uncouple them gratefully received) ,inverted manifold , remnant drilled out and flared 10mm copper pipe bonded in with some jb weld. Hopefully this will cure eventually as not sure how many decades old the tubes were. Just to be on the safe side i have fitted eveything back up barring that hose connection which i will leave until tomorrow. A gentle tappy-tap on a small 1/4" socket persuaded a lovely flare on the copper. If this fix doesn't hold water (boom tish..I'm here all week) , i will go with plan b of making a screw in fitting.

bloomin lovely solution to a flared end! love the simplicity of it...and the result is great.
if it does not seal, I would think a threaded insert or tapped hole and fitting would work well....
nice job.

JP cheers jp , full adherence to the k.i.s.s principal. if only the rest of the job went as simply today. fitted the rest of the bits back on in less than 5 minutes...then two and a half hours to bleed the #*#*ing thing!!! ended up gutting the stat and back flushing everything ..twice. had a quick blast around the village and no obvious signs of and H/G issues but time will tell. it did have a bit of a stutter but i think that was down the the massive amount of water that had sprayed everywhere during the "process"!! trouble is that now when daylight is on my side i need to drop some h2o out to squeeze some antifreeze in. oh , the insert worked like a dream!

Now you see there is a huge difference between 'Bodging' and a 'PAE' fix (Practical and Economical) which in this case is perfectly suited on a vehicle that has little money invested in it - more to the point it just involved a common sense approach - No pop rivets / cut down coke cans / filler reinforced newspaper or bathroom sealer required what so ever

More copper micro-bore pipe to the rescue. Figured if i could gently clamp the top and bottom hoses i could drain just the rad and refill with straight antifreeze. Bent a couple of pieces of pipe back on themselves..top one clamped with a quick clamp , bottom held shut with a cable tie due to lack of space. Drained...refilled...quick bleed...all seems well , so far. Hopefully consider this a close shave as a head/head gasket job certainly falls outside economically viable for the old tub unfortunately.

back from christmas hols and have got some miles on the old thing and i think i have got away with the head gasket (kiss of death planted). it became apparent though that it wasn't running as well as it had or starting as easily as it always has , i needed to feather the throttle from cold , just like the good old days with a tired old carb. when i took the throttle body off the manifold i only disconnected the throttle cable/electric connections/vac lines leaving fuel pipes untouched so figured it shouldn't be too much? a bit of googlage seemed to point to the idle control unit. despite some precautionary application of generic contact cleaner when i reassembled the system i pulled the plugs off the throttle body yesterday and gave the contacts a good lagging of servisol cleaner and put back as a last attempt before swapping bits over. with baited breath this morning....normal service resumed...started beautifully and idles like a sewing machine. i love this stuff!!

Today was one of those days where you scrape by , by the skin of your teeth. The new stat arrived to replace the one i had to gut and i fitted it yesterday with no further dramas. So glad i did as we had our hardest frost of the winter and ended up scraping the INSIDE of the screen. Oh the luxury of heat , that thing that had been missing for a few weeks. Mind you the up side of such a clear morning was a stunning view on my commute. Kind of made working on a sunday less of a grind!!

Sat at work just looking at RR, having used my 91 106 and had a hoot thrashing it into work - the joys of a featherweight car. Passed it's MOT with no issues Friday afternoon having been abandoned in the back garden for over a year.
Must be the best 400 quid I ever spent, 18 years ago, for all the abuse it's taken since.

Spot the deliberate mistake... .....yup , it should be UNDER the car. Well it was till it sheared off at the join between the cats. I knew i should have changed the soggy gearbox mount! Made for an entertaining drive home from work though!!
