Buy a cheap impact wrench from Halfords, i got one a while back for around £15 when they were on offer and its the best thing i've ever bought!! you can either use the fag lighter or connect it straight to your battery to power it. I've used it to remove the rear hub nuts on my beetle and it got them off no probs i've resorted to grinding the same nuts off in the past on other beetles.... I exepected it to be curse word for the price but its amazed me.

It was a shame the last one died a death as i found it quite entertaining, especially Goaferboy's effort with a model boat on his roof ;D But like Pillock says dark nights makes it a bit harder, maybe when the light evenings come back it will be worthwhile trying again. I reckon if its started again it needs to be ranked in a league table kind of way and run over a period of 6 months or so - whoever completes the most challenges win's something? not quite sure what though? Roll on Summer

Excellent Mr plums! imagine how much something like that would cost in the UK!
I'm looking at buying a property in france next year for between £40-50k, was going to buy a property over here but i just can't afford it so i thought i'd buy myself a nice place in France:)
Whereabouts is that place? as my other big issue is deciding on where in france? any suggestions?
Did you sort a mortgage out in france or over here?
Don;t suppose you have got MSN as i have loads of questions to ask, if you have the time to answer them?

I ended up buying the mag in the end, couldn't resist! plus your trackday bit was worth a read! well done I'm planning to do a v8 conversion on the mg, already got the engine and whilst i'm doing that i want to fit a sebring body kit and i'll be fitting sebring valences aswell, so the bumpers will be going. Then i need to choose some rims to fill out the sebring arches but i'm not sure what rims yet? But none of thats goign to happen until i finish the beetle! so the idea was i bought the v8 and then that would give me the kick up the i needed to finish the beetle and then i can work on the mg......and it seems to have worked so far.... They are porka rims on the beetle off a boxster Got any pics of your mg? can't remember seeing any? Cheers Gav

I managed to find the effort to do some work on the cars today I got stuck into to doing some more prep work on the beetle as i have really got to get it finished this winter as it's been going on for almost 5 years now on and off!!! I then did a bit on the mg and fitted the rear anti roll bar back on as i removed it last week, as i was told that the anti roll bar would be making the rear of the car to stiff and in turn it would be more likely to spin on hard cornering . So i removed it just to see what difference it made and i preferred it with so i have fitted it again! Then i worked on my bro's bmw for a bit as it failed its mot on a few easy fixes. Some pics to make this thread a little bit interesting a bit of each

What do we think of them?
I asked a mate if he had access to a van to help me collect a V8 for the MG and he turned up in a little 'sooty' van, an old 'f' plate rascal.
To be honest I was pleasantly suprised by it, nice and comfortable inside - plenty of room in the back and the V8 fitted in easily.
It was a 996cc engine so cheap tax and had a 5 speed box, we kept to a steady speed of 60mph and did about 200 miles for around £20.
What an excellent cheap practical little van ;D imho

Well i found today a mate at work has a 5 speed rover v8 gearbox that i can have:)
Yeah its alot easier with a rubber bumper car, on a chrome bumper MGB the front crossmember needs changing to allow more clearance, the gearbox tunnel isn't big enough and needs modifying and the radiator needs moving.
Whereas with a rubber MGB it was available with a V8 lump so you don't need to do any of the above. So no body mod's are needed although they do suggest putting some vents on the inner wings by the mainifolds to let some heat out.

Yep got to get all of those, i need tubular manifolds aswell as i don't fancy cutting the inner wings to fit the rover manifolds. It probably won't be fitted until late next year i'm just going to start gathering the bits i need, I may even get some engine work done on the v8 before it goes in. I just really need to finish my beetle before i can even think about taking the mg off the road but i just didn't want to miss out, as low mileage sd1 engines don't seem to be about very often. Got it for £205.96 which i was pretty chuffed about. The thought of fitting the v8 to the mg has given me the kick up the i needed to get the Beetle finished The engine and gearbox is sound in my mg now so should be able to get decent money for those although my diff may be iffy as i've been getting a knocking noise that may be the diff on its way out and i have got a trackday at Donington friday so i guess i'll find out if its the diff or not

......i bought this instead ;D A Rover SD1 9.35 to 1 compression ratio V8 engine thats done approx 55k Should make the MG a bit more interesting, just need to pick up the rest of the bits i need now... I was planning to buy a camcorder to mount in the car on trackdays but couldn't resist the V8 - wise move i think

Like this, (only did it quick so ignore the bits of orange still in grey bit!) I think i prefer the grey at the bottom - that split colour scheme is growing on me on loads and i may actually go with those colours when i give it a fresh look this winter.
