''Australia is the world's leading producer of rutile, zircon, bauxite, iron ore and ilmenite, the second largest producer of alumina, gold, lithium, manganese ore, lead and zinc, the third largest producer of uranium, and the fourth largest of silver, nickel and black coal.''
And they are concerned about importation of classic cars...it's almost laughable if it wasn't so pathetic. The world is gone mad!

You're still winning, nothing like progress. And oil catch tank looks great, must be good for another 10 BHP...

I'll be checking my replacement fuel hose on the pump and filter now after seeing yours. I must say I'm rather surprised how your new hose deteriorated so quickly. Well, I dropped down the fuel pump/filter cradle and inspected the 2-3 year old fuel hose and it's cracked on it's complete length. Might be just coincidence with yours Kelvinator but I'm sure glad you mentioned the issue. What's even more annoying is that I only replaced the hose as good preventive maintenance when I was replacing the fuel pump - there was nothing wrong with the 17 year old original hose! Edit: As for removing the sound deadening bonnet glue, I use petrol. A few wipes and let it dry in usually seems to do the trick.

Ever since I put the w124 back on the road it's had an annoying rattle from the back end, 4 years, a full suspension rebuild, 2 exhausts, 3 diffs, and countless times poking and prying about underneath it's still there! I had similar on a W201, the rattle drove me nuts. It turned out to be a stone lodged between the exhaust heat shield and the rear floor.

Since I'm far from being a driving god, it will have to be option 1 for me but being honest I'd prefer option number 2.

Brilliant thread, enjoyed reading it all. Keep up the good work.

Anyway, when are you 'dropping in' the supercharger?....

Somewhere on another forum, there was something about getting the ECU re-set but i'm not sure of they were referring to a diesel or a petrol. Yep, that sounds right on both petrol and diesels but i think it's only a two minute job.

From what I understand it's plug-in and play on petrol models, can comment on diesels but imagine it's the same.

A great looking car and a great job you are doing, very impressed with the rear hatch glass and roof head liner jobs. I really like it in white too. Bookmarked.

Yep, remove all the arch lines as it's well worth doing.
As for the'channels'. Look at each corner at the bulkhead with the bonnet up. Get a torch, shine down and you can just about see there's drains for excess rain water. If that area is damp or holding water the drains are blocked. Use a rod to clear the drains and then flush with water and you should see the excess water draining under the car.
Can't help with the radio.

It's a pity they seem so god-awful... Honestly, they are not . Just one example, for motorway work they are imo a far better cruiser than he equivalent E36 BMW and probably just as reliable too. Also they feel far more solid as well. And this is coming from someone that's had several sweet old school BM 's I think this thread is being a bit harsh generally on the old W202. Drive a good one with a pit of poke under the bonnet and the suspension in good order and there's not a lot to complain about.

I've had many Merc's over the years, covering models between 1988-2002. My current Merc is a W202 C230K with a 130,000 and overall I'm very pleased with it. But it did suffer from the usual rust - front wings as already mentioned, bottom corners of the doors etc but all non structural. Luckily the sills are good as these are known to rot and sort of writes off the car if they have to be replaced as the inner sills car be affected too.
So, if you do buy a W202 make sure the sills and boot floor are in reasonably good condition for starters. Other than that just regular preventive and general maintenance should keep it running well.
Faults in the last four years/18,000 miles:
1.Superficial rust as mentioned and two small holes in the boot floor. 2. MAF. 3. Fuel Pump. 4. Radiator. 5 .Heater Rheostat. 6. Horn wiring fault. 7. Multi function switch. 8. BAS control unit. 9. Brake hoses. (MOT) 10. Springs. (MOT)
And that's about it which I don't consider too bad overall. The good news is that parts are cheap and plentiful even when using brands like Lemforder, Febi etc and there's great deals to be had from Germany via the Web.
But if anybody wants to avoid rusty Merc's forget about any made between 1992/3 (including W124's) to possibly 2005/6 imo!
