A bit late to this thread, but thought I’d say what a great read it’s been.
I’m “southern” born and bred, really, Canterbury originally, then a stint in south London, followed by East Sussex, then Plymouth for Uni before returning to Kent. I’m in Dover now and, like someone else said earlier, I can see France from my window on a clear day.
My mum was a Scot though, and the Anderson half of my dad’s family moved south in the late 1700s looking for work as a result of the highland clearances. I have always enjoyed the time I have spent in Scotland on family holidays and left to my own devices I think I’d definitely migrate north if I could. I have two friends who have moved away from the south, one to Kettering (the midlands I know), and the other to north Wales. I am at a point in my life though where it makes sense to stay where I am until retirement, at which point we are seriously considering a move away from Kent to somewhere (anywhere) else.

If the lights come on then it shows the safety switches are all made. The Countax we have, which is basically identical except it's a 15hp single, has the seat one and one on the footbrake.
The starter solenoid was goosed on ours, but I managed to use a boggo Lucas one I had in the stores after swapping some terminals around. The genuine Countax solenoid was pretty dear.

Are those nyloc nuts on the turbo? They may not like the heat much (or may be for test purposes only?) They were what I had for mocking up. I have subsequently got some self-locking serrated flanged nuts. 👍

Looking absolutely fantastic. 👍
I nearly bought a new “Kombi” one back in 1991, but the payments were eye-watering. My brother in law had an A reg panel van from new in ‘83, and by 1990 it was looking pretty scabby. I just couldn’t commit to the outlay on something that looked like it would take me longer to pay for than it was likely to last.

I’ve not seen those Rob. I do have a cheap exhaust gas temperature gauge that I bought with the intention of putting the sensor in the EGR blanking plate, but the more I drive the motor with the tweaked pump, the more inclined I am to put it back to stock. The extra go is nice, granted, but I don’t like the smoke, or the niggling worry in the back of my mind about long term reliability. Most of the people who insist there’s “no problem” with doing these mods, reliability wise, turn out to have had only a few years or a few thousand miles of actual experience before the vehicle expired from something else giving up.
Another factor is that whist I can just about see the economy with this setup that I used to get with the old engine, I have to drive exceptionally carefully to get it. The old “drive how you like, doesn’t matter, it still does 29/30mpg” has been replaced by “drive really gently, get 29, drive normally get 26”.
A mate of mine wants the tweaked pump for his motor, and has offered a freshly rebuilt standard one as a swap, so that’s what I am going to do.

Not much has been happening on the Land-Rover front, other than chugging along, while I have been working on the Austin. However, the steering is getting even more wandery than normal and I still have the power steering kit to fit. This means getting my finger out and replacing the manifolds and exhaust, so that I can fit the power steering pump on the bracket that came off the engine I got from forkliftfred a lifetime ago. Anyway, I made a start the other day, and offered up the 300tdi manifolds again onto the spare engine. The turbo outlet is going to be pointing at the inner wing, and the wastegate’s inlet pipe is uncomfortably close to the starter. Loosening the circlip holding it on makes rotating the compressor housing to a more sensible position easy enough, but the wastegate mount is a lug cast into the side, which is then in the wrong place. Rather than drilling new holes in the housing and risking kippering it, I made a bracket that picked up on the original mounting holes, and put the actuator back where it needed to be. Once I’d satisfied myself that it was going to work I swapped the core into the manifold I had cerakoted earlier this year. I then stuck a new EGR delete plate on it, and offered it up complete. Yeah, happy with that. Decided to fork out on some new oil feed and drain hoses as the secondhand ones that came with the manifolds were a bit manky. While I’m waiting for those to arrive I’m still trying to decide whether it’s worth fitting the cheap boost control valve I bought or not. Anyway, once the pipes are here I don’t think I have any more excuses not to swap the manifolds and put the new exhaust on. With that finally done I’ll do a thorough check and overhaul of the steering, then I’ll fit the power steering kit…. ….doesn’t sound much when you say it quickly. 😃

That one in the photo might be the same chassis but the running gear is different and it's definitely a bit of a bitsa too. 10 spoke, 5 lug wheels up front, 12 spoke rears. Looks like the wheels are larger than designed for, hence the incursion of the body into the mudguard. The positioning of the steering column is bizarre, the arm being in such a low position compared to the rest of the underpinnings- feels either small manufacturer or slightly later homebrew from older affordable parts? Phil I’d put money on that being a 1920s built home made special.

Are there any shocks on the back ! Ace. Carry on. James Well spotted, no. It doesn't have any on the back, and the front ones don't do much. Extra bonus points for the Uncle Buck "knackered shock wobble"

Cool. That’s basically the same mower as the one you/Craig gave me the other year. When you’re done robbing bits off it let me know what’s left and what you want for it. 👍

I’m the same. The fewer new holes the better in my opinion. I try hard to make my modifications reversible should I need to revisit them in the future, and I have a mantra that I try very hard to only fabricate custom parts that are not going to wear out, and to use as many consumables from either the donor or the original vehicle as possible.

My method involved having the car up on ramps at the back, a trolley jack and two stacks of blocks to make a controlled descent or ascent, and some thick cardboard on the floor to slide the engine out/in on once it was sat on the floor. A removable rear valence would have made the job a doddle, and I simply cannot understand why the factory didn’t make them that way.

Good work. Having spent many a happy hour taking VW engines in and out, I sympathise entirely with your efforts. I got pretty adept with jacks, blocks and wedges. 🤣

Hi all, I'm a relative newcomer to posting on this forum after very infrequently lurking in the shadows for many years. This thread has been a very enjoyable read from the start to where we find you now. The musings and continual deliberation are something I can relate too heavily! Never quite knowing what avenue to go down next. I myself have a classic commercial, a 1959 Commer Superpoise tipper Mk4, so it has been inspiring reading another commercial getting the love they deserve. When I'm free to get into the project a bit more, like others have said, I may well create my own thread and give a bit more detail on it all. But for the time being it seems fairly pointless. But I'll explain that in due course, anyway, I digress, Keep up the great work Glen, would be great to see it about in the coming years (seeing as I am Kent based too!) Glad to hear that my ramblings have entertained. 😃 RootesRescue I follow you on Instagram you should do a thread from what I've seen I'm sure people on here would be interested. Yes, please do a thread. I nearly bought an ex-AFS 4x4 Superpoise and have always loved the look of them. 👍👍

But, I’ll add the caveat that you’ll need to look long and hard at those stub axles, having read Nick’s concerns about them.
