Yeah, looking at the underneath of that I’d say it’s definitely good enough to modify. I’d probably go for an A-frame from just behind the axle on the outside, up to the hitch at the front, rather than 50x100 box though.
You might not need ramps either, if you design it so that lifting the nose on a jockey wheel tilts the whole thing like a see-saw…

That’s come out well. 👍
Are you planning on reinstating it as a working fireplace?

Can you not just modify that one to suit, or are it’s underpinnings not up to the job?

I’ve ruined countless pairs of glasses over the years. The ones I’m currently wearing are like the surface of the moon with weld/grinding spatter. I have even spent significant chunks of cash on dedicated prescription safety glasses, only to ruin them in short order too. These days I just use mid-range Bollé overglasses as they’re significantly better than the cheapest ones, but still cheap enough to bin guilt free once they’re beyond use.

I’d stick some weld in the slot and file it back to the right size. It’s not like you’ll be putting any serious torque through it. Those cotter pins take way more stress in bike crank sets and motorbike kickstarts than you’ll ever be asking this assembly to take.

Really enjoyed reading through this and decided to properly join afterwards... Gives me hope on my ongoing/life's work, which I might stick on a thread - '76 Commer Walk Thru (there's another one of these on this site, which brought me here). Thanks for the kind words. Yes, please do a thread. Us lunatics need to stick together.

Wheels and tyres make or break a vehicle and those, IMHO, look absolutely spot on.

Depending on it's size it could be a tool for cleaning copper pipe and fittings prior to soldering them If the female brush is parallel sided then that's what it is, if it's tapered then it's a battery post tool. Hard to be absolutely certain without something to scale it from.

Nice. Looks like they've got a different offset to the ones on there, or is that just my eyes/the camera angle? Combination of angle, slightly less offset and a narrower rim(these are 9"wide, the others were 10"). Took that decision to reduce amount to which it protrudes beyond the arch despite how good it looks as a "swamp" truck. Cool. I was trying, politely, to say "they look like they won't stick out as much as the current ones", but I didn't want my own personal aesthetics to be weeing on your fireworks if that wasn't the case! Will be good to see them fitted, I imagine they'll be a big improvement all round.

Glad to hear that the Lada has gone to a new home. Means I can move on from agonising over whether to buy it, to kicking myself for not buying it. 🤣👍

Funny how the same kind of underlying causes can make two people be so different. 😀
I’m kind of hyper sensitive to texture and the fit of stuff. I can’t bear synthetics unless they’re the type that closely match cotton or fine wool. Odd seams, or itchy labels are a big issue. Bless her, my mum used to have to cut the labels out of my shirts, and I still have to do the same.
I couldn’t agree more about stuff being long life and repairable, preferably indefinitely if desired.
That’s probably why I have been driving the same Land-Rover for so long, and wearing the same (style of) clothes. If I find something I really like, I tend to buy two or three of them as a minimum, so that when they inevitably get discontinued I can still enjoy them. I waited the best part of thirty years for the style of glasses I prefer to come back into fashion, and when they were discontinued I managed to find a supplier in Lithuania that was clearing out his inventory, so I bought his entire stock: enough to see me beyond my century if needs be. 🤣
Obsessional, moi? 🤣🤣
Part of the problem is that more expensive doesn’t necessarily mean better quality. It’s a good indicator, but no guarantee. Like you, I have often found that the quality of many things have been diluted over time, maybe as suppliers change, or accountants meddle. Dr. Martens boots are a good example; anyone who owned a pair in the 80s can tell simply by picking a new pair up in the shop that they’re nowhere near the same, despite looking at first glance ok, and despite the eye-watering price tag. My previous footwear of choice were Britton high-leg assault boots, which gave astonishing comfort and longevity for a remarkably low price. Sadly, they were put out of business a few years ago and I can’t find anyone with stock in my size anymore. The Chinese made equivalents are nowhere near the same standard. I have found a pair of what are supposed to be NOS German army para boots, which were cheap enough to take a punt on and that seem ok after the first week. Sadly though I know that I’ll be going through the same rigmarole in a few years when these are worn beyond repair. I’m actually considering investing in a handmade pair to my specifications, but it looks like that means a $500 purchase from Nick’s Boots in the US… certainly a big jump up from the £60 Brittons, and not something I can afford at the moment.
Anyway, enough rambling. Shirt looks very cool, and no doubt that in your indomitable “dandy about town” way you’ll carry it off splendidly. I’ll take one in plain white or grey, with no collar though. 😀👍

Very smart. Very you. 😀👍
I wouldn’t be seen dead in it, unsurprisingly, but then I struggle with anything beyond plain t-shirts and Levi’s. I’ve just spent the best part of six months going in and out of rabbit holes trying to find a new pair of boots for work, because the type that I have been wearing for the last thirty years are no longer available. It’s my autistic resistance to change once I have settled into something that does the job and that I feel comfortable in.
I envy your sartorial confidence.

Everything on a lorry like this is heavier than you think it’s going to be. I can’t lift the 4-speed gearbox that came out of my Austin; not without risking hurting myself. Just watch your step (and your fingers!), and you’ll be fine. 😃👍

What's the deal with the road legalness of them? Just allowed to be pulled along by an operator, or could you in theory change a few things and ride inside? I think they're classed as a "Pedestrian Controlled Vehicle". You have to walk in front of them, and maximum speed is a brisk walk (4mph). If you let go of the tiller they stop. It's not impossible for the determinedly inept to run themselves over, which I think was largely responsible for their demise.

It's identity is still live on the DVLA computer, showing as registered 1962, last V5 issued in 1982 and last tax ran out in April 1992, which is way later than I tought they were still being used by.
