Looking at ebay it would seem the 924 has been hit by the dreaded 'scene tax', not many clean ones on there for under £2500. I know a lot of people on vw forums complain about 'scene tax', but I don't really get why they complain, as they are normally the biggest reason for prices going up! (Strangely enough my local scrappy doesn't charge 'scene tax' on the parts I buy from them!) It stands to reason that if something is popular it will hold or even increase in value, it's no good crying 'scene tax' if you miss the party or leave the party early! Conversely, over-priced tat tends not to sell. I recently picked up a very tidy bmw e36 325 for £650. One of the big reason for buying it was that I am pretty sure it is one of those cars that will start to creep up in value, just like the 924 has done/is doing.

check the simple things first. is the battery good, if so move onto the ignition switch, they are prone to failing and give a similar symptom to having a flat battery.

personally I would ditch the cd player, it isn't the right period and looks to be one of their later entry level headunits (still a good unit, but would be much better suited to a late 90s car) . Front comps and sub is the way to go. adding extra speakers will just spoil the sound stage. Out of all the kit you have, i'd look to add the line input for the phone/mp3 player to the EQ. You could go direct to the amplifiers with a suitable cable, but you would have to control the volume via the phone, which could be an issue when driving? I guess you could maybe add some kind of input level control, but it'll be another thing to install/hide.

It's like going back to an ex, and that rarely ends well. Biggest mistake of my life was doing just that a few years ago. brilliant analogy! Made me chuckle!! I think the biggest problem with buying back a car you cared for is that if it doesn't return in the same std it left you are always going to feel a bit disappointed and underwhelmed by it.

i went back to a car I sold around 3 years ago recently. Mixed feelings about it really. I was a bit sad to see it in such a state, which kinda prompted me to buy it back. Needed loads of bits doing to it. Generally it just hadn't been kept to the std I kept it to and had been asset stripped of all the good parts I had previously fitted to it. Still ran fine though, once I put a new clutch in it, changed a lower tca, fitted a fresh wheel bearing and cleaned the throttle body out. Sold it yesterday after re-owning it for all of 2 months!

Got the strut back together, refitted it to the car and it now drives really well. No nasty noises, just a good little runner! Knowing that the grinding noise was down to a failed wheel bearing is frustrating, but I am past caring now, as the car went to its new home last night. A chance browse of ebay highlighted a car that I just couldn't resist, so I went and viewed it, agreed a price, so the polo had to go! I did tidy a few more bits up though before the polo went. Arches are now a bit more presentable. Still not perfect, but a lot better than how scruffy they previously looked. I also gave the car a good wash and a coat of wax. Then it rained!! Spent most of tuesday giving the polo another good cleaning and taking out some of the goodies I had fitted to the polo. My wifes cousin who is having the car is getting it dirt cheap, so I decided to keep some bits like the custom tweeter pods, relayed headlight loom, pioneer shelf speakers etc. Also fitted a set of coupe s steels in place of the speedlines. Gave it one last coat of collinite wax and thats me finished with this little car, unless I end up buying it back again! Not a patch on when I first owned it, but it certainly is a massive improvement over how it looked just two months ago. Hopefully my wifes cousin will take good care of it. He is a mechanic by trade, so should have all the tools needed to finish her off.

I personally have never had a 6 pot bmw that gave 30+ mpg. 25+ is more like it. which model(s) did you have? I was going off what I have recently researched, as I haven't picked up the 325 that I am buying. The general feeling was that around 30 mpg was obtainable. The guy selling mine was pretty sure he could get near those figures (he is however in his late 70s, so perhaps has a more sympathetic driving style?) I haven't bought mine to rag or drift around in and don't plan to even do many miles in it, so mpg wasn't top of my considerations.

the 6 cylinder engines all return around low 30s mpg, so not much worse than the 4 pots. You might get 35 mpg cruising on a motorway, but all much the same, so you might aswell go for the most powerfull one you can find. Saw a really nice touring the other day in fact. A silver one with m3 front bumper plus a few other m spec goodies, looked a really smart car. Doesn't really look like a design which is close on 25 years old! Must be a good design though, as the e46 started of as a reworked e36 shell. The e46 is rumoured to be 70% stiffer though. E46s are cheap as chips too, just not very retro looking.

I owned an E36 318 compact a few years ago. It was OK but nothing to write home about. I like the 320 estates. I'm definately having something different Than a VW, I'm tired of inflated scene prices etc ditto, had vws for 13 years now, hence me just buying an e36 325. The compact isn't as good as the proper e36, runs a different rear axle and doesn't have any 6 cylinder goodness either. I was planning to get a touring, but a saloon came up in the right condition and at a price I couldn't refuse. In fairness though, not everything vw is overpriced. I could'nt give my polo gt away and believe me I really did try!

e36 bmws are super cheap at the mo, sure to be a good investment too as rust, bangernomic fans and drifters will kill off the ropey ones pretty quickly. E30s have started to rocket in price and I have no doubt that the e36 will follow in its wheel treads!

Had a couple of mk1 meganes. 1st was a 5 door 1.6 8v, bought as a stop gap. Bought for £300, spent next to nothing on it, ran it for a year and sold it for £350 when the gearbox started to have some selection issues (yes the buyer was aware of the gearbox being pooped) Couldn't really fault it as a cheap banger. It was reliable, good on fuel, fairly nippy and the boot was a good size. Next up was a meg coupe 1.6 16v with leather and all the gadgets. Wasn't so cheap at £2250 but it was still fairly new at the time (anything around 10 years old is fairly new to me!) Again it was mostly a great little car. Wasn't as practical as the 5 door for obvious reasons! Was amazingly frugal. I don't know how accurate the mpg computer was but it often averaged 45 mpg and I even managed to get it up to 52mpg on a long run! Wasn't fast, but nippy enough for the wife. Handling was acceptable, but i wouldn't describe it as a drivers car. Very comfortable though. Only had two faults, both of which frustrated the hell out of me. 1st was a failed window regulator. This was a total pain o repair as it was difficult to access and needed calibrating once fitted. Get the calibrating wrong and the new regulator tries to destroy itself! The other fault was a water leak from the headlining (very common on them even ones without sunroofs as the leak tends to be from the aerial mount)

I wouldn't bin them. 924 prices seem to be on the up. I was having a look on ebay a week ago and they seem to have double in value since the same time last year! So I would imagine that spares will be going up in value too. What fuel injection system do they work with? I know the golf gti fanboys used to use throttle bodies from other vag cars (some of the sporty audis had the right ones) as they were the same, only bigger in size.

80/90s digifant multipoint fuel inj. cars have high pressure external fuel pumps. golf ones are pretty reasonable price wise

No interest? Maybe I have made the car sound like a shed?! I will be trying to get the sill patched up and the tanks swapped (I will be changing the price once these things are done though). I was a bit out on the mileage, it is currently just below 167k. The car is still in use, starts on the button, drives pretty well for an old polo! I can't really flex too much on price, but if you have you own bits of trim, wing mirrors etc or if you don't want the side trims or the gt gearbox, or if you want it as a resto project I could take the tax off to drop the price a bit. I can't afford to give the car away and I think I have put a fair asking price for it given the rarity of the car (hatch gts are rare than uk g40s would you believe! Not as much fun though!!) A quick breakdown of what I have spent money on:

I originally bought this car back in 2007, spent a load of time and money on it and sold it a year or so later! In the time since it has done the rounds and been stripped of most of the hot parts I had fitted to it. I bought it back a few months ago with the plan of restoring to a useable condition. I need a bigger car with more doors and a bigger boot! I don't have space to store 2 old polos, an mx5 and a bigger car, so I've decided the gt needs to find a new home. Since it has been back in my care, I have replaced the damaged distributor for a 6n mpi one, fitted a clutch as the old one was slipping. When I bought the car it was making a grinding noise, so I fitted a spare 4 speed gearbox I had and filled it with fresh 80/90 gearbox oil. Thought that the car was fixed, but the grinding noise came back and it turned out to be the front wheel bearing. So I have also replaced the front wheel bearing too! I have fitted a set of early exterior adjustable mirrors as the original mirrors were damaged. I still have the gt gearbox and I believe it to be in working order after finding the state of the front wheel bearing. It will come with the car, but will need fresh oil as I drained the old oil. I have also given the rear arches a quick sand and a coat of underseal and black paint to protect them through winter. I was planning to repair them properly in the summer. I have also given the passenger side sill a fresh coat of underseal. The drivers side has not been done due to needing a repair to the rear end of the sill. The only other jobs I have done is to fit a new speaker loom as the original had been hacked about. I fitted an iso socket with front and rear speaker lines wired. I have also obtained and fitted some door pockets, as they were missing. good points: taxed until april 14 mot'd until march cheap! rare colour indian red metalic interior is in good condition, no rips, fairly unfaded too drives well, starts first time, idles well, goes pretty well too well spec'd, comes with steel sunroof, roof bars and green tint factory glass shock absorbers are fairly new, as are the springs (all std ride height) front wings were replaced a couple of years ago, so are mint condition bodywork is fair for the age of the car. There are some small scabs on the lower half of the bodywork, nothing serious, but worthy of a mention. The tailgate has some rust below the window some service history and loads of receipts for work done A rare car, you won't see many genuine gt hatchbacks, let alone ones with factory fitted roof bars bad points mileage is high, just shy of 170k fuel tank has a small weap from the filler neck (I have a replacement tank, but have not got round to fitting it yet. I would be willing to include this at cost price (£70)) driver side rear sill needs patching, car is still drivable, but it will need fixing before the next mot. Rear arches need repainting due to someone folding the rear arches and splitting the paint, so they had surface rust on them. rear wiper has been removed, stupid mod in my opinion and I have a replacement motor, but have not got round to fitting. It is a good honest little car and I hope that it might find an owner who will carry on restoring it rather than modding or breaking it, but once you hand your money over it is yours to do as you please. I want £350 for the car. the blaupunkt stockholm was a good unit in its day and it still is. Granted it doesn't have huge power, but match it well to a good set of speakers that aren't too powerfull in terms of wattage and have a high sensitivity and you will get good sound reproduction from it. There are still pleanty of manufacturers that make 6x4 speakers. Sound deadening will make a world of difference too. As for chopping the door cards, if you want an alternative, shelf pods could be a viable option. Pioneer amongst others made some good shelf pods back in the 80s. The main downside of this is that the soundstage won't be so good as all the sound will come from behind. You could fit some tweeters up front to help improve this though (most tweeter kits will come with a pod adaptor so you could fit them on the dash using velcro or similar so they won't damage the originality of the car should you wish to remove them.

it'll probably fetch around £30 on ebay in working order. Audioline don't really have the following of other brands. If it had an alpine badge on it, then it'd probably fetch 3 figures! Still £30 isn't to be sniffed at.
