My Wife had a 1.6 16v same as the first pic and it was brilliant. The bolt worked it's way out the gear box "dog bone" mount (common point on these as they can also snap) and I changed the coil packs on it as it developed a misfire. This was all I ad to do in the near three years she had it. It also had half leather and leccy everything. I'd defo have another.

Love these, I bought a very early (N reg) 1.6RXE for £50 with a blown head gasket and it proved good reliable transport for a good few years after. Rear shox can snap and coils fail but generally they are all easy fixes and the cars are nice to drive, very comfy and easy to live with.
We replaced the RXE with a Scenic Fidgi (last of that era megane) and have recently picked up a slightly newer scenic so they cant be that bad as I keep going back for more!

Coilovers are cheap and they're 4x100. What's not to like.

I had a bright yellow 2.0 98 and thought it was great Right up until the day the ECU decided to wipe itself completely clean Local Renault stealership had "never seen anything like it before" and wanted to charge a fair wad of cash for a new ECU,matching keys, locks ect.... Fun car tho.....

I needed a cheap roundabout a few years ago, with a budget of £400. Bought an S plate AND an R plate. Both run faultlessly for 6 months then sold them for £400 each. Great little cars:-)

Didn't hairymel have "fun" with one of these? yes i did Also probably the most random car if you want a reliable one.. yes it is main issues i can think of are check very carefully the bulkhead under the battery , coil packs (cheapish fix), crank sensors, later I'd injection systems very expensively unreliable and all topped off with french electrics coupe has the most useless boot evar would have another as it was a nice thing when it was going, but would not want to spend much more than pocket money on one.

Soft spot for these, as my dad owned one, as did my grandpa, and we've had several other Renaults in the family too.
However, I'd echo the "beware"-type comments - my dad's one chewed through two gearboxes in its first 25k miles, thankfully under warranty. Wasn't his driving either - he'd done 90k miles in a Renault 19 with the same engine, without issues.
Nice car when it wasn't eating cogs though, nice to look at, comfy seats and reasonably frugal. And I'm often of the belief that if one has managed to last this long, it was probably built okay to start with and could be worth a punt.

My girlfriend had one as a courtesy car a few weeks ago. It was really sticky inside.

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

Yes. Probably the stickiest car I have ever driven was loaned to me by my Renault garage ,every piece of plastic was disgusting YUK! Still it was free of charge but that was all it had going for it.

Had a couple of mk1 meganes. 1st was a 5 door 1.6 8v, bought as a stop gap. Bought for £300, spent next to nothing on it, ran it for a year and sold it for £350 when the gearbox started to have some selection issues (yes the buyer was aware of the gearbox being pooped) Couldn't really fault it as a cheap banger. It was reliable, good on fuel, fairly nippy and the boot was a good size. Next up was a meg coupe 1.6 16v with leather and all the gadgets. Wasn't so cheap at £2250 but it was still fairly new at the time (anything around 10 years old is fairly new to me!) Again it was mostly a great little car. Wasn't as practical as the 5 door for obvious reasons! Was amazingly frugal. I don't know how accurate the mpg computer was but it often averaged 45 mpg and I even managed to get it up to 52mpg on a long run! Wasn't fast, but nippy enough for the wife. Handling was acceptable, but i wouldn't describe it as a drivers car. Very comfortable though. Only had two faults, both of which frustrated the hell out of me. 1st was a failed window regulator. This was a total pain o repair as it was difficult to access and needed calibrating once fitted. Get the calibrating wrong and the new regulator tries to destroy itself! The other fault was a water leak from the headlining (very common on them even ones without sunroofs as the leak tends to be from the aerial mount)
