Prompted by my possible imminent purchase of a car I owned a couple of years back Mainly due to the wife pretty much forcing me to sell the Cortina (it'll be in the for sale section soon ford fans) It got me wondering, how common is it for us lot to end up once again back behind the wheel of a car that we had sold on? The car in question is this (with a chubby me stood next to it) In between I have enjoyed and my current You?

Nothing wrong with going back to a car, at least you will know its little 'foibles'. I would love to go back to a couple of cars i have had, but one was scrapped and the other is showing as untaxed since 2011. By the way 'that' is not even close to being chubby, you're almost svelt

i went back to a car I sold around 3 years ago recently. Mixed feelings about it really. I was a bit sad to see it in such a state, which kinda prompted me to buy it back. Needed loads of bits doing to it. Generally it just hadn't been kept to the std I kept it to and had been asset stripped of all the good parts I had previously fitted to it. Still ran fine though, once I put a new clutch in it, changed a lower tca, fitted a fresh wheel bearing and cleaned the throttle body out. Sold it yesterday after re-owning it for all of 2 months!

Had an R-reg escort a few years back, nothing special but a really good example, really been looked after, fair few mods, went through a lot with that car, sold it, about a year later saw the girl I sold it to, got talking and she was on the lookout for something newer so I offered to buy it back, think we even agreed on a price, then she took it to get valeted where a truck ran into it and wrote it off, gutted.

I sold a capri, had a mk2 escort for a couple of years, then bought the capri back, worst thing I ever did, it ended up scrapped.

Personally I'd not go back, but a friend recently bought back a Reliant Scimitar he owned 30 years ago. It got a new chassis 25 years / 2500 miles ago (no typos there), and he's absolutely delighted.

I just sold my Renault 11 to a friend, and we agreed I'd buy it back if at some point he doesn't need it anymore

It's like going back to an ex, and that rarely ends well. Biggest mistake of my life was doing just that a few years ago. I bought this back last year after selling it in about 2010. It had been asset stripped, even the engine, and it had been battered, was rotten, bits literally cut out of it, by butchers... I had spent £3.5k on it putting it back to perfect, new brake and fuel lines throughout, every bit of suspension was new etc - all destroyed. scrapped it soon after. I miss only a couple of my other old cars, I would wish they had sympathetic loving owners, but realistically I do not want them back.

I think the biggest problem with buying back a car you cared for is that if it doesn't return in the same std it left you are always going to feel a bit disappointed and underwhelmed by it.

I bought back my e36 318is, 18 months after I sold it with a broken windscreen & short MOT - got it back for what I sold it for, with more MOT & new windscreen, ran it until the MOT ran out & sold it on for £50 less than I bought it for. Great car that, was tatty but such a good car, nearly bought it back for £300 with coilovers on but no space for it - got stripped and scrapped

I like that analogy too It sounds like it's in pretty much the same state as I last saw it I doubt any of my exes are ;-)

Well, it took a few months longer than I anticipated (crashing and selling the Cortina and having my Escort stolen didn't help) but I do now have the old Sierra back I have one more silver machine than Hawkwind once again It's pretty much as I last saw it apart from a few more stickers and a bashed up rear bumper - oh and it's recently gone round the clock so currently shows just 200 miles! It just needs new rear arch outers at some point (got them sat waiting), the rear bumper replacing (came with an early poverty spec replacement in the boot that I may well paint and fit)... ...and a decent drop in height! I might try a set of RS 4 spokes on it to see how it looks too
