It's probably over boosted and gone into safe mode. My ibiza cupra used to do this often in the cold.
That or your n75 valve is nakered. ( boost control soleniod).
Get it hooked up to vagcom, these engines have a very good diagnostics systems built In

Less is more here.
Light as poss, you want it to have a strong gear box ( rules a lot of French curse word out)
Corsa red top, or sabb turbo lump. Jack the back up. Some sticky front tires. A friend of mine has a nova red top , pretty std engine with a big shot of gas running 12s.

There not a pinto either. In fact not one single component is shared. There about 2" longer than a pinto. Volvo 16v heads can be fitted for monster power.

How's it underneath? Rear chassis legs and inner rear sills. Also what's the battery tray like.
What front suspensions it running. As the xr just ran a comp strut, the rs turbo s1 ran a anti roll bar aswell and the 1600i ran the best front set up and was fully adjustable. Also dictates the correct front mount type gear box needed to be fitted.

I to had one of these when young.
Deleted the back box with a straight pipe. Popped a cone filter on with a cold air feed ( the standard snorkel likes to suck up water ) and uped the boost.
Fitted some 307 front breaks. They bolt straight on and are so much better.

Totally mate.
Was actually the worst part of the owner ship. There a bunch of stuck up dick heads.
I bought it to abuse the curse word out if it. Was a 340 bhp focus not a Ferrari.

Not that retro, but a modern classic none the less. ( I got murdered in the rs owners club for letting the car get this way, told em to do one. I built it to kill it not clean it )

I must admit I used to feel the same way ( I cut my teeth on old rs turbos etc)
Used to struggle and break things. Then I bought some decent tools and every thing is so much Easyer. My rule is if I've got 3 jobs to do on a engine i just pull it out lol
Can get the engine out of all my toys in an hour odd. So much Easyer on the floor.

I rarely post up but really like this.
As for the gearbox , you want a series 2 8 bolt diff, and either a sport ka ib5 gear box ( this has correct bell housing and will pretty much bolt straight in )
Or a racing puma box for the ultimate ratios ( low top speed)

A clutch plate is never balanced to the engine as it spins at different speeds ( it's attach direct to the gear box remember. )
A clutch cover may be balanced as a full assembly.
I had similar systems to you on a lightened sigma engine ( zetec s ). Turned out several of the clutch plate springs and rivets had sheared. New clutch plate sorted it)

I rarely post but that is fantastic. Oem+ style. Exactly how I'd do one. And those front seats, hats off my man.
I've just finished restoring a fiesta rs turbo, wish I'd done one of these now.
