I'd be looking at a leon Cupra tdi. Much cheaper, faster, handle better. More spec and no want white interior. Or an ibiza xupra TDI if you can find one. Same as the skoda but with more power and Ap 4 pot breaks I have looked at the Leon and Ibiza as well and they seem a bit thin on the ground in my budget unless higher mileage and still no history. I run a leon 05 tdi cupra as my Dailey. Payyed £2800 for it 2 years ago with 92k on the clock. 1 owner full history car Done 40k trouble free miles. It eats tires and breaks though. As above I did a big brake swap using Tt parts, it's mupped to just under 200 bhp on a clutch saver map. My better half bumped it last year resulting in it being a cat d, cost me 500 to buy it back and 60£ to fix so Basicly free motoring.

Ran a 2004 hawk eye sti, with the factory PPP package so 305bhp.
Loved it. Never bettered 15mpg though unless on a run sat at 65.
Didn't like short journeys either. Was quite lumpy.
Gutted to have sold it.
My advice would be go for an STI if you can as they are much better specced. How ever a mapped late model wrx is much Easyer to drive fast. Gears are longer etc.

Re, the worn leather.
I bought a lether repair kit from ebay, for my e46 club sport.
Re dyed the front seats and repaired a sizable whole in the bolster. Mine where much worse than yours. The kit was £20 ish.
I sent them my reg and they colour match the repair dye to your specific interior.
I though it was going to be curse word, but totally transformed the seats.

There the same. You'll need to salvage the following from your old engine.
Flywheel and crank position sensor Water pump Sump and oil pick up The inlet and exhaust manifolds *** do not change the oil pump, use a renault 5 gt turbo / clio 172 oil filter, this will clear the chassis leg
All of the above also apply to the 2.0 engine. Which is what I'd be looking to instal.
If you can find a HO inlet from a Rs 1800 or 130ps xr3i then this is also a worthwhile addition

Then old zetecs will run and idle with most of the sensors u plugged. ( maf, water temp, lamba )
I think the timming may have jumped a tooth. Or you have a large air leak.
A bad maf will also give faults like that. Un plug it and see if it improves.

Most custom Hubs are ally.
You almost certainly would never use stainless for a hug.
Any machine shop worth a curse word should be able to knock some up.
I've made some for mk2 escorts. ( ally )

I'm running a blob eye sti PPP
One of the last of the 2.0 turbos.
Average 16mpg ( most of my driving is round town). Parts aren't that bad. Cars really reliable. I service it quite often through choice.
It's 305bhp out the box, goes really well.

My focus wouldn't boost at all when the pump packed up.
The ecu had a built in boost cut when it detected hight charge temps.
Fitting any pump is going to greatly help your situation.
I've seen people using caravan pumps on a budget.
I rebuilt my original focus pump usin a guide from the Rs owners club

Ah the famous escort Evo vid.
He made 168mph in the end. But had over 350bhp for that.
Very quick car that was. Some properly trick bits.

I can't help but think that you'll need a lot more than 230 bhp for 170 mph.
My 280 bhp ibiza cupra ( same engin and box as you, can't see it being much heavier either. ) would only pull 154 vmax. And it struggled to pull the last 10 mph.
Was very quick to 130 though

The connection is not just as good believe me. Any thing actually drawing some amps will arc that out. But it's your car. ?

Nice tidy up.
But I'm afraid you've use the connector blocks completely wrong.
The screw locks down on to the copper cable. The rubber should be cut back to just before the brass inner block.
Obviously they should be shouldered and heat shrunk.
