The Valeo flywheel you have there bolts directly onto the M103 crank, you don't use the bearing or spacer shown on the EPC. The bearing that is in the flywheel is all you need. Be careful when you slide the gearbox onto the engine, that bearing is a needle roller type and is easily damaged. The recess in the rear of the flywheel can sometimes need machining out a few mm if it wont sit properly on the nose of the crankshaft, some do, some don't. The other option is to carefully grind 3mm off the end of the crank, sounds scary but isnt. Wow that was quick - thank you so much. I can zip it all up confidently now, That SM flywheel weighs a heck of a lot - reminded me of the crazy Russian guy (no not that one!) who added 4 flywheels to a Lada. You can machine them down quite alot if your not using the trigger wheel on the back. I machine the face down flat for the 606 builds too, takes even more weight off. You can see a flat one in this vid:

By the way your two mystery switches on the dash are probably wired up to the duo valve, it controls the flow of coolant through the heater matrix. That makes sense! Is there something broken that it's hotwired? Is it fixable? The heater controls on the dash can go wrong, the 2 wheels that control the temp burn out. Some people bypass them with a switch, but I've never seem them mounted like that. I'll bet if you pull the dash panel off those switches are spliced directly into the harness, an easy fix is just change the pannel from a breakers yard.

Found this plastic "thing" in the doorpocket. Does anyone have a clue? Peter C carat 3.6 ? That looks like one of the plastic "hooks" that hold the doorcard onto the door, only Mercedes do it like that so people break them off when trying to get inside the door. You would need the injector lines and throttle cable setup from the donor vehicle, possibly a little mod to the fuel lines depending on year. And take the bulb out of the warning light on the dash. Doable yourself if your handy with the spanners. Have a look on here if you need any more info: link

Hopefully your new pump will get you going again, but for reference any pump from a OM601, OM604, or OM661 can be used on your engine.

I custom build tipping bodies for new versions of that, the machinery firm next door to me sells alot of them to colleges and national trust sites. They are 48v and not road legal, if you want something road legal look at a Kioti Mechron.

Possibly. Not being funny but there looks like a lot of corrosion under that primer, did you take it back to clean shiny metal before spraying it?

The axle from the Ducatto/Relay/Boxer vans work quite well for trailers, take plenty of weight too.

Not so much now, but I used to have an attitude of "I don't give a fu*k"...
Wanted a big merc v8 engine years ago, so bought a very rotton w126 560sel down in Rochester. Waited till Sunday morning and drove it home to Buckinghamshire round the M25 with no tax, no insurance, no mot, but all the rust. Parked it in the back garden feeling quite pleased with myself for getting away with it, and over the next few months parted out the car of everything I could sell via Ebay.
Fast forward 6 months and we are left with a car with no doors, no bonnet, no boot lid, no bumpers, no lights, no interior, half an exhaust, but a running 5.6l v8 and autobox. The plan was to get this thing onto a borrowed trailer and take it over to my unit to finally harvest the engine and loom. But a 560SEL is a big car, and of course it wouldn't fit on said trailer. So in the early hours of the following morning a Battery worklight was zip-tied to the slam pannel, and I screamed this thing the 10 miles or so round all the back roads over to my unit. I don't think the few people that saw that one could quite believe what they witnessed, as some nutter sitting on a milk crate shot past in something straight out of mad max.
Those days were fun.

Making new cables is best, but if your working to a budget e39 and e46 BMW's have some very useful cables in them.

I used to have an old E class that had a worn anti roll bar, not the bushes but the bar itself. Every year before MOT I wound gaffa tape around the bar to take the slop out of it, eventually I swapped in a new bar.... 6 years later.

I don't worry about breaking down, it can happen in any car so why worry?
I do keep on top of maintenance and do all the work myself, so I normally spot things before they become a problem. I drive old German machinery mostly so the only breakdowns I've had were down to me being an animal, broken driveshafts ect.
One thing I am lucky with is to be part of a great group of mates, most of who would bring a car trailer anywhere, anytime, if needed.

First four locksmiths I have contacted tell me the car is too old for them to work on. Have a number to try in the morning who may be able to help. Whereabouts are you?
