As hopefully the rust proofing will be completed this weekend I am thinking of getting the rear windows tinted. Nothing to dark, just a light tint. It should look ok.

It would need to be a very light tint then to keep it legal and subtle too I would think.

The AMG versions had a tint all round from the factory, so as long as your not going darker than that it wont be a problem.

Went out to move the car and the ignition key was a tad hard to turn to start the car. However it turned on the fourth or fifth attempt and I moved the car to where I needed it to be. But, when I went to turn it on again the key refuses to turn and I assume that some of the tumblers in the ignition barrel are sticking up and not letting the key turn. I have tried everything I can think of to free off the sticking tumblers, wd40, graphite, tapping the end of the key to shake them loose, using a vibrating drill on the end of the key etc but to no avail. You need to turn the key to position one to enable the collar to be turned to release the barrel and it steadfastly refused to turn. So I think I'm coming to the conclusion that I need to drill the barrel out. Not really looking forward to that as it's going to be a real pain in the butt I can tell.

Not sure on an early w202, but on a w124 you can unbolt the housing for the ignition from the steering column itself. Or keep wiggling it and it will let go eventually.

Having researched drilling out the lock, it's not an easy job at all. It would appear that drilling the lock isn't guaranteed to get the lock out of the housing without wrecking it. So I seem to be stuck with trying to get the key to turn to position one and then withdrawing the key barrel. I have tried spraying wd40 or similar down the key slot, tapping the end of the key in the lock with a hammer to try and shock the tumblers back into position. I have used a vibrating drill on the end of the key but still can't get the key to turn.
Anybody got any tips on how to get this key to turn?

My tip is for everyone: take a long hard look at how many keys and unnecessary junk you have on your key ring. Do you really need to carry every key you own all the time? I went to a lot of stuck ignition locks when I was a recovery driver, and every one of them had a load of shrapnel hanging off the key. New lock barrels aren't expensive, are easy to change if working and normally give notice that they are about to fail. Save yourself a load of grief, and fit a new one then!

What about a blast of compressed air in or t'other way round, a powerful suction from a hoover such as the red Henry switched to warp speed suction?.... Or some freeze spray as used to release stuck bolts so the tumblers reduce in size perhaps allow you to wriggle them free?

Anything's worth a go when stumped.
It is a manual isn't it?....I know on auto's they had some sort of electro mechanical trickery linked into the start inhibit system that could cause issues with the ignition switch....is there any such thing on a manual?

Nice colour!
I'd be tempted to waxoyl that underneath so you can still see the lovely paint through it ;-)

It's a manual so no problems with a start inhibit system.
I thought of using clear waxoyl but had black stone chip sprayed on as that was what was in stock.
Still trying to free off this ignition key. Will try a blast of compressed air tomorrow hopefully.

Well I have to admit defeat. This key problem has got me stumped. Everything I can think of and all the advice I have been given has failed to let the key turn at all. So I am going to seek the services of a professional locksmith and see if they can sort this. Such a simple problem can cause so much agro is unbelievable.

First four locksmiths I have contacted tell me the car is too old for them to work on. Have a number to try in the morning who may be able to help.
