Well not one auto locksmith I contacted would look at it. So I asked a local vintage car Facebook page if anyone could suggest an auto locksmith who could help me. One of the members who used to work for the AA suggested that I try brake cleaner sprayed into the lock to free it off and after a good few sprays into the key slot it finally turned and let me take the barrel out. Now just to clean it up and use graphite on it.

First four locksmiths I have contacted tell me the car is too old for them to work on. Have a number to try in the morning who may be able to help. Whereabouts are you?

Ordered a new barrel and key from Mercedes and it should be here on Thursday. Unfortunately it will mean a separate key to start the car from the door key as to get a new barrel cut from Mercedes is a) bloody expensive and b) has a waiting time of two or more months.

The car looks great, a lovely colour too. Years ago I had the same issue with the ignition barrel on a 190E 2.6 which is the same type as your C-Class., I did as you did and bought a replacement from M-B and then took it to an automotive local locksmith and he changed the tumblers so the new barrel worked with the original key. Worth doing imo. Good luck with the new motor.

Got my new barrel and one key from the parts dept of Mercedes Belfast this afternoon and now can start the car with a key. Just the fuel injection pump to get sorted now but that will have to wait until after Christmas as the only place that I have found that is able to recondition the Lucas Delphi Epic pump fitted to this car is fully booked until after Christmas. Apparently Mercedes only fitted the Epic fuel pump for 2 years or so and they are known to give trouble.

Now when I bought this car I was told that the diesel injection pump was leaking when cold and needed a new set of seals. The car runs well once started but can be a bit of a pain to start if left for a couple of days. As I'm too old now to be lying under a car these days I did a bit of research before taking it to a local Mercedes independent garage to get it sorted. These Mercedes were fitted for a two year period with an Epic fuel pump which needs specialist attention to refurbish. Luckily we have here in Northern Ireland the only place I can find that can still look at these and in fact they do a lot of work for all over England too but they are a fair distance from me. So I arranged to leave the car in and the guys would check out the pump and remove it for me so I could take it up to the refurbishment place. It turns out the pump has been leaking into the engine mount so didn't drop onto the ground, just puddled into the mount of course destroying it in the process. The guys have removed the pump and it's up at Tyrone Diesels in Omagh awaiting their attention.

Well I finally got a phone call from the pump specialist and was asked if I was sitting down. Apparently the pump is leaking from the timing module which is a plastic moulding. As this jump is no longer made tracking one of these modules down is a bit of a faff and rather expensive. £1600 for the module is just crazy as the pump still needs the seals done to ensure it stays sealed. So, the big question is now what to do with the car? I have yet to speak to the garage guys but my first thought is to reengine it with another diesel engine from a newer Mercedes which would probably be the cheapest and best option. Will need to research what engine fits with the least amount of problems. Anyone got any suggestions please?

if my knowledge of these and the info on wiki is correct then you have the OM601 in there at the moment, the Commonrail OM611 was introduced in 1997, I'd be looking to find one of these, in the C class its called the 220 CDi the sprinter also used them in huge numbers though the older ones that had them have mostly rusted away or been exported.

Thanks for your offer, unfortunately these Lucas Epic pumps were only used for 2 years before they were discontinued so a second hand replacement would still be a risky purchase.

Anyone got any suggestions please? Sorry to hear of your misfortune and I can't offer any solutions but my gut feeling is, if go down the route of buying and fitting another engine and even presuming that engine and associated parts are o.k. it will probably cost around the same money as repairing the pump or maybe more. Not really helpful I know but worth bearing in mind.

I may have found a new pump. However the model numbers are very slightly different. My pump is numbered 604 070 00 01 and 84640A032A The new pump I have found is numbered 604 070 00 01 and 8640A031A.
The only difference is 031A compared with 032A.
Would anyone know what the difference is if any in these two pumps?

Right, a very quick search throws up the a seal repair kit on the e bay is listed to fit 031A and 032A (£74ish). There is also a lot of information re converting EPIC to a Bosch pump ex- Ford Transit ... Also, have you tried Diesel Bob ? link

Unfortunately it's not leaking at the seals but at the timing module which is a large black box on the top of the pump. I have bought a new pump at a reasonable price, just awaiting it being delivered.

Diesel Bob lists these Epic Delphi pumps as not being able to be reconditioned.
