Wire brushed and sanded the torsion arms for my beetle yesterday and gave them a coat of etch primer, ready for chassis black today. But I’ve just noticed these patches. Is this rust coming through?!? Stupidly, I’ve just fitted new balljoints so I’m rather reluctant to have them blasted! Any suggestions please?

Possibly. Not being funny but there looks like a lot of corrosion under that primer, did you take it back to clean shiny metal before spraying it?

If you want them to last theres no real option but to blast/dip etc.
You might be able to get away with dipping with your joints in there. Grease them up first?

If there was any rust left I would use a converter like cortanin before the primer.

Doesn’t look like rust, maybe discolouration from what was underneath. I’d just chassis black it, it’s a solid lump of metal and even if it was corrosion it’s just surface and not going to cause you any bother.
You could just redo that bit, see what’s underneath, if it’s clean just respray it?

I just done mine a few month ago. My method was remove old ball joints then remove as much of the rust with 40 grit flap disk and then used phosphoric acid on heavy pitted rust. This was the best i can do without getting them blasted. I then fitted the new ball joints. I used bilt hamber epoxy mastic followed by steyer black enamel paint.
Did you treat the rust before etch primer ?

The thing is, I couldn't see any rust! The were painted in hammerite previously which was intact just a bit oily and faded. I degreased them and wire brushed and sanded them, then etch over the top. They've got new balljoints in now, so to pull them out is £50 in another set of new balljoints and £60 to have new ones pressed in.

Does it flake off, pick off if you scratch it? Reaction to what was on it before?

I would probably say it has reacted with the existing paint.

I’d agree with the above, likely the old paint
