I'm getting close (ish!) to being ready to respray the engine bay on my Polo. Bare metalling is such enormous fun. I've bought the etch and normal primers but am looking for decent quality top coat aerosol paint. Now I'm well aware the finish is mainly in the prep, but I'm gonna try and do the colour top coats too as primer is obviously porous. However, depending on how it comes out I may end up getting it blown over afterwards by someone with a gun and compressor. So the aerosol paint needs to be single pack, easy to obtain, reasonably priced, of good quality and compatible with a proper gun spray job if needed. Can anyone recommend a product? Halfords colour cans seem expensive, anyone else? Thanks in advance guys. Cheers, Richard.

I'm really liking this. The silver wheels make this a superb sleeper. The Dymags look hard as nails! Turbo conversion must be done, especially if you keep it looking standard. Excellent work so far, keep us posted.

Sleepers FTW! The best conversions are those that look standard and/or factory under the bonnet and nice and simple on the outside. This ticks both boxes and looks to be done to a very high standard, very nice work mate! Definately need to see some build thread pics.

No contest for me, it's got to be the Cortina, the Stag is a common as a MGB these days and just as boring where as the Cortina is a better looking car, more usable and will get lots more attention. Yeah I'd second that. What was once so common is now so rare in comparative terms. TBH I'm not a big fan of Stag's, yet I really like Cortina's so it's a bit of a biased opinion. I'd stick with what you have, you know what it needs to get it sorted. Late Cortina in Ghia spec with Cosworth v6 is full of win. Get it done mate.

Very nice mate. Unusual to find one with the beige trimmed Recaro interior too. How has the engine been taken to 2.2? Is it on 93mm bore with an offset grind on the crank? I used a Burton BF63 cam in mine many moons ago. IMO it is far better than the usual Kent 244 (or equivilent) rally spec cam that most people used when building a big power Pinto. Helped give plenty of torque throughout the rev range yet it still made over 160bhp at the wheels at the top end. Would easily pull 7200 rpm in top with a 3.54 diff/205/60 tyre combo!! Happy days! Keep us posted with your progress mate. Cheers, Richard.

I've Waxoyled a few of my cars in the past. Be prepared for a very messy job. I definately recommend warming the Waxoyl before use. A bucket of VERY hot water is ideal to stand the Waxoyl tin in. You want the stuff to be dripping out of any drain holes when you apply it. Don't be shy with it. Good luck and get ready for a shower afterwards to get it out of your hair!

Unfortunately battery tray corrosion is very common on these. It's not really the previous owners fault, unless the tray is kept free of leaves and dirt and the paint undamaged it does tend to happen. The tray is open to the elements by design but water is supposed to run out of the drain channel. However, more often than not a leaking battery will have exposed bare metal and as the tray is always full up with leaves and muck it becomes a rust trap. With the battery in place you can't see anything, the first thing you know is the carpets and your feet getting wet.

I tend to warm the rubbers with a hair dryer if they are old. Just softens them up a bit and makes things easier.

Good little cars these. Is it 1043 or 1272cc? Both are very good on fuel. 155/70's were OE size but 165/65 are better IMO especially if fitted to 5 1/2" J rims.

These are cool vans. I've got a Citroen Berlingo version of this and I reckon they are brilliant. It's my work van and my daily drive. IMO the chassis is superb, you can really throw these around with confidence and they just seem to grip. They have excellent compliance too, riding over speedbumps with ease and soaking up the worst of the pot holes our roads are littered with. The brakes have good feel and pull it up pretty smartly too. I drive mine fairly hard and it always gives good MPG too. I'd love to be able to put a later HDi engine from a 306 in mine, however I don't think my boss would be too pleased abut the idea!

I only really like the mk1 Fiestas but that does look sooo much better without the horrid (sorry!) XR2 kit and wheels. TBH, I can't see how you are gonna gain another 40 BHP (a further 30% in power) just by rebuilding the head and carbs, unless it was running really badly before? I'd say 136 BHP on the dyno is a reasonable figure already. I reckon properly sorted, 150 BHP with that spec would be about right. Good luck with it though, it must be a real hoot even now! Standard looks FTW, especially with the naughty engine! Good work mate, keep us posted with any progress.

You have every right to have a winge there MP. That is enough to pi** anyone off. Like you said, why is it people who are so called experts do such a poor job? We need more people like TonyBMW in this world rather than the rip off merchants who couldn't give a damn about working to a high standard. Such a shame, it is a lovely car and deserves the best. Good luck with it Phil.

Absolutely stunning! A beautiful example of one of my favourite Capri's. I love cars like this, the standard of build and finish is way better than it ever would have been when new. I assume you had to use a special paint on the underside to try and protect it from chipping? It must be slightly flexible I'd have thought? Congratulations on your superb Capri and thanks for posting.
