Well, I can hand on heart say my uncles was a metallic blue one with CDX badging and CDX styleee cross lace alloys. Maybe it had been dealered up, but it was definitly reading like it was a CDX? Who knows, not I sir I actually quite like mk2 cavs to drive actually, feel like a big nova. I cant speak for what somoene else may have done for it but I can tell you Vauxhall never made a Mk2 CDX. Would have been nice if they did though.... heated seats would be great! I want to hear what this car is! Top of the range Mk2 was definitely the CD. I was in a band in the early 90's with a lad who had a metallic green one (Y-plate IIRC) with the lattice alloys/bright green velour everywhere inside. Nice cars even if they handled like a cross-Channel ferry.

It's a GLD. It'll be a 1905cc XUD dizzler. Bomb-proof. Brilliant engines.

How short are your journeys? if it's mainly town driving, that's probably about right, urban driving will cost you whatever you drive. My wife's 06-plated 1400 Fiesta only does about 28mpg on short journeys.
My W124 is a '94 E200 auto, I do a 36 mile per day commute on a mix of motorway/A-road and it's averaging 36mpg. I've checked and double-checked it and it's 100% accurate. Worst I've had is 34, best 38. On a long journey sitting at 60-65 with the cruise control on it does just over 40mpg. Having said that I do very little town driving with it.
As far as I know it's the six-cylinder models which suffer most from engine bay wiring loom troubles.

Given the weather forecast, it's probably more likely to end up looking like this this year unfortunately: Billing has a tendency to turn into a swamp at the drop of a hat, that pic was taken in 2008 when heavy rains the week before flooded the showfield and rendered it unusable. This year we've had more. Take some wellies!!

This was always my favourite: My memory may be playing tricks on me, but I'm pretty sure Ford borrowed 'Raspberry Sheikh' along with a host of ther top UK Customs for the 1980 Motor Show at the NEC because their factories were on strike and they couldn't get any cars for their stand. Imagine. Instead of gleaming Cortinas, Fiestas and Capris the whole sprawling stand was filled with top-notch murals, glittering chrome and Metalflake and dozens of slot-mags. I was 16, and in heaven! Glad to know you're doing OK Steve, despite the obvious blows that Parkinson's brings. May you live long in the land where 'the nights are warm, and the roads are straight'. Very best wishes. Brian

Any more for any more? If we don't have enough cars it might be an idea to open it out to a more general RR Wales/South West Midlands (Worcestershire/Herefordshire/Gloucestershire/Gwent) 'Local Yokels' stand, as big combos like A52 will be struggling to fit everyone into theirs. I'll give it a couple of days then amend the thread title accordingly.

Welcome to Retro-Rides Steve, from someone who admired your awesome work as a schoolboy back in the late 70's. It's moments like these that remind me how chuffin' brilliant the internet is.

Can anybody identify the base of these two custom cars? Early 50's Holden FJ from Australia.

Provided you keep it on the full mark, it'll probably keep going for ages yet, I wouldn't worry about it.
When I started driving most of my mates had Minis, a couple of pints a week was par for the course. When I started driving trucks for a living in the late 80's, we had a fleet of the old 360 'Dover'-engined Ford Cargos, some of which were burning 2-3 gallons a week!
Keep on pouring oil in it whenever it needs it until it goes bang/fails the MOT. Then chuck it away and buy something else!

That is nice. I'm thinking of starting a new W124 club called 'The Wafty Crankers' I feel the same about mine, even with a lowly four-banger under the hood. No need to shout 'look at me', just stick it in D, engage cruise control and glide serenely to your destination.

I've done 1,000 miles in the month I've owned it, and nothing's fallen off/broken/gone bang. Which suits me fine! Have used £160-worth of juice which equates to an impressive 37.76mpg. I topped the oil up when I bought it, and it hasn't used a drop since. Or water. Or ATF. Me likey. Needs a wash though as you can see (work backs onto a canal, and the local seagull population routinely use our works carpark for target practice...barsteward skyrats)....and I'll have finished refinishing the wheels on Saturday if this balmy weather continues. Won't be having the tyres swapped over until I get paid though, as DVLA have just relieved me of £121 for six months' tax.
