There needs to be a mood to describe... ...when a car addict is sitting quietly on the sofa and their girlfriend pipes up "My dad's mate is selling a car, been garaged for years..." around the same time as you're mentally adding up the bits needed to fix the existing cars. So there's a chance of a 1985 Cavalier appearing. No idea what kind it is, with the most detail so far being "I think it was blue" and "It hasn't done many miles". I don't even like FWD Cavaliers. But it's 1980s. It gotta be cool, right? What I realistically think it might be: What I kinda hope it might be: What I wish it was: What my ears perked up at the idea of before I heard the 1985 bit...: What it will probably be when I go to see it...

I get lots of comments on my Mk2 SRi and they are great cars. So easy to work on, modify etc and plenty of the wear and tear parts still available. The only problem lately is people are starting to ask silly prices for them. Rare yes, some way of being desireable to joe public at the moment. Another 10 years and maybe.
If you don't have it, please let me know details as I may, if not it'll get advertised on the Mk2 Cav club so go to an enthusiast hopefully.
PS if its 1985 then its mid-spec, so already the least desireable kind. If its and SRi wont have the spotlights, skirts etc either.

I don't think there's much chance of an SRi, really - it's "elderly couple's second car been garaged and not used much" - hasn't been MOTd for ages, apparently. I'll be amused if it's some shockingly tiny engine like a 1.3, and gut feeling tells me four, not five doors are more likely.
Unless it's rotten, or someone else beats me to it, it'll be heading over here and residing in the spare space in my garage, upon which I'll have a ponder about what to do with it - as you say, they're dead easy to work on.

A MK2 estate would be nice!

Oh yes! An estate would be lovely, the only FWD Vauxhall (bar an Astra GTE 16v, maybe) that I really wanted - I really think that's very unlikely. If it is, I shall buy a packet of Jammie Dodgers in recognition of the Jamminess of finding a forgotten Cavalier Estate.

I'm frequently disappointed by a non-car-person's descriptions of old cars. I once got very excited when I was told that a friend of the family had this "old Datsun that was parked up in his garage when nearly new, and the bloke never came back for it". Imagine my disappointment when I peered through the cracks in the garage door to see a Nissan N14 Sunny.
A similar misleading description led to me going to this farm in the middle of nowhere to see an "old Skoda that had ran out of MOT and just needed a bit of fettling". I fought off the mother of all hangovers and a psychotic Jack Russell which managed to sink its teeth into my backside only to find that the "fettling" this Estelle needed involved removing it from the ditch where it lay, re-homing the chickens which were living inside it and scraping out a couple of tonnes of chicken sh*t from the interior. Now, rear-engined Skuds weren't quite as rare about ten years ago as they are now, but I think I'd still think twice.
Hope you have better luck, and the car turns out to be a good 'un, and not some mid-90s Vectra... ;D

I drive past a red and white Yank classic in a garden quite often. I kinda relish the scaring off the chickens and scraping off the poo aspect - it's the discovering that once you've done that, you've a 1 1/2 tonne colander instead of some pristine-but-forgotten classic that spoils it all.
And that's why I haven't walked down the Rolls-Royce littered driveway to knock on the door and ask "What's up with the mouldy car under the tree".
I'm pretty sure the car being offered is at least a Cavalier - Pru's dad knows a bit about cars, could definitely tell a Cavalier from a Vectra. I'm mostly expecting disappointment in the form of it being about 85% Cavalier and the remaining 15% being where the rear suspension mounts, front inner wings, and rear arches should be.
I remember 1985 Cavaliers in 1992 being notorious for rusting in places where no normal car should rust. Like, 10" diameter circles of rust right in the middle of the doors.
(Also, Ew, N14. Not even an N13. How depressing).

I spent Saturday stripping an Estate for spares.. rare beasts now. The one I stripped has been scrapyard grabbed though. Saloons seem more desirable than the hatch's too for some reason. don't know why, probably because there are less left now. Hatches sold very well in the day.
As for rust, check everywhere you are right. In particular Rear chassis legs go badly and are a mare to sort. Check fromwhere the springs sit, along the leg towards the front of the car to where the rear beam mounts are.... with a screwdriver if you can.
My bet is 1.6L Saloon:)

My uncle had a CDX model of that mk2 cav, always said he would let me buy it when he stopped driving.............................didnt happen. Bummer. On another note i once basically snapped a base model blue mk2 cavalier, i was chasing my mate in a pug 504 pickup and it didnt like the speed i did the hump back. So in short, get it, enjoy

i had someone phone me up (through my editing of the sporting escort owners club magazine) - "i have a really old escort in the garage i need to get rid of, it's in good condition, no rust and has got an MOT - I want about £500 for it", can't remember the reg but i immediately worked it out to be early 80s so a mk2, i asked if it had anything else to identify it "it's got a rear spoiler" she says and now i'm getting very excited. must be an RS of some sort "it has electric windows and a badge on the boot that says 16v", so now i'm torn between my imagination of some kind of engine swapped mk2 rallye beastie and the likely reality of it being the more recent registration using the same letter - of course it turned out to be a fairly dull mid 90s repmobile

Oooh, CDX. I forgot that spec even existed.
So, given that I'm also really leaning towards it being a 1.6L, though probably a hatch, I'm going to say for betting purposes "A dark blue metallic CDX Hatch with all the toys and velour seats. Mmmmm, velour".

Is it just me that thinks the saloons looked way nicer than the hatches? Not that I'd pass on the chance of a bargain hatch, mind.

Mk2 Cavalier range stopped at CD level. Darn good spec on those cars for the time though.
The only Cavalier CDX's are the end of run Mk3's - M/N plates mainly.

There there.
I sold a Mk 1 Escort 1300 Sport for £400. It was MOTd & Taxed. It was 2002. Most people on here would have had the floor welded perfectly before I'd finished writing the advert for it.
Look on the bright side. All that stuff you can find on eBay that you'd never have known about before...

I think the Mk2 Cav was the last good looking car Vauxhall made (until the new Astra came out anyway).
