Was the SRI 130 around in 1985? would be fab if it was one of those ;D Pretty sure the 130 was only a facelift model, which was around 1987. Yep, that's the badger. And just to help matters you could have a 1.8 or choice of two 2.0 (NE and SE) engines. The 130 was naturally the weapon of choice but the 1.8 ones certainly didn't hang around either.

I love Mk 2's and have had plenty of them in the past. However, I as others think they might want way too much for that Cav. This is of course, just an opinion. That one was mine for about 9 years which I sold a while back. Clean as they come and 65k on the clock. Couldn't sell it for ages at the time and certainly didn't get 2 grand for it. For me the SRI130 was the best of the bunch. The convertible wasn't a great machine and while smart looking with the roof down, they suffer from scuttle shake (quite allot), the windows rattle about and they tend to jump about the road a fair bit...always felt like driving an unfinished job somehow. I loved mine as I had it for so long but then I only used it to go to the pub in on a sunny Sunday in the end Everyday use it was a bit tiresome. I think if I were to go for another I'd hold out for a sporty model. Got me thinking actually....

This is what I've always suspected about them, just looking at the door dimensions, strengthening and so forth. They're not the same conversion as the ASC sourced American J-bodies, which are at least a known quantity in terms of longevity. Having said that the survival rate of the Cabrios is pretty impressive!

I think peeps need to re-read the OP's quote a few posts back, where he stated the family members weren't expecting 2 grand for the car. Sadly mk2 basic spec Cavs aren't worth a pile, even in mint condition. Values of SRi's are starting to creep up, but still very affordable. IMO, the one to have is the Commander - one year only and rare as poor quality wobbly children's play pony poo.

Yeah, I really don't think they want £2K for it - but I do think they've seen MOTd, glossy ad depicted, similar mileage cars for £1500 or thereabouts and have assumed that one '86 Cavalier is much like another. The £2K I mentioned was "I think it needs £2000 of work/time (however you slice it) to be worth£2000 - i.e. as is, it's essentially worthless".
Really I think it's shove through an MOT and get £500 for it in any normal market situation, and almost certainly sign the death warrant for it in the process even if it is just delayed by a year. I'd hoped to either save it myself if the work was more interior/mechanical, or find it a home here with one of the many skilled welding geniuses if it was mint everywhere else but needed bodywork.
They did a Mk 1 Commander as well, I think. Regardless, according to that useless pile of misleading info - How Many Left - there are a grand total of 5 Mk 2 Cavalier GLSis left - 4 manual, 1 auto - and 7 surviving Commanders!

and 7 surviving Commanders! I knew they were rare, but that's plain scary! The last Commander I saw was on ebay about a year ago, and that was a highly unusual spot at the time!

It'd be a bl00dy brave man who took on a Commander (they were a Mk2 by the way), and I say that as something of a Cavalier fan myself. I recall them in the day having myriad electrical and rust problems to the point of being something of a joke. The rumours that they had all been left in a field prior to going to dealer's showrooms must have been true from the subsequent problems that beseiged them. In fact I think the only Cavalier I was offered and didn't buy over the years was a Commander with some really odd electrical problems.

The cavs when new were a bad car. But hay who wants a good car? Good freind of mine has a mk2 in red parked up in his allocated parking space,in his block of falts in salford. offered him £500 a year ago with no t&t, offerd him, offerd £250 this springhe said no . He had to pay the scrapman to tow the car away last week. Cost him 125 quid. Not sure quite what my point is ,but if you have a heap of Sh*t parked up and someone will give you good money for it,Take itttttttttttttttttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hate it when owners are directed to classic car adverts, and they now think the car is worth mega bucks. An elderly relative now thinks her early 80s corolla estate must be worth £3000+ as someone said that the hatchback is going for similar (yep the similar 'hatchback' is the fabled AE86 :

I'm thinking of the Command Performance for the Mk 1.
I'm still pondering this one - whether I want to even attempt to make an offer. It's a time-warp car. If the time warp is taking me back a decade, rather than 26 years - to when I was helping with a used car dealer's lot and the odd 14-year old ratty Cavalier would show up. And I wouldn't have given £200 for it then; a typical buy back then would be things like a C-reg Accord in green with green velour interior and 56K miles for £50!

I used to have a 1985 GLSi. I paid £1300 for it as a Mint example (1996) It pulled like a train! It had enough torque that in the wet the wheels would spin then grip then spin up again at about 3500 rpm!
My car had PAS, central locking and heated electric mirrors but no lecy windows and a manual sunroof. You have said the bulk head is ok but if it has PAS it might have cracked in the drivers side corner behind the rack and the soundproofing - mine did!

No PAS on this one, it would seem.

Its a nice thing that, though I reckon its worth about £300-350 or something like. I imagine that tide mark is hiding a few treasures down behind the rear wheels. Whats gonna happen with it, are they gonna attempt to flog it or stick it back in the garage for a few more years?

They were looking for a new home for it that wouldn't see it wrecked. The trailing arm mounts near the sills looked solid, but the rear arches are hiding some misery. I was thinking of buying it, but I can't weld - £350's more than I'd value it at. The arches may be hiding stuff, what worries me is the slight rust spotting on the inner wing near the strut towers. If that's making a way through from behind...
Nothing's been decided, I've yet to call back and find out what they're really thinking.

Keep us posted.....! Must admit, I wouldnt mind giving it a little tickle with my anti-spatter tip (when I get back from france in a few weeks!!!)
The inner wings don't look too catastrophic to me, however I have previously found myself saying that a few times in the old tat blog with predictable results.

I have an `87 convertible and find it Ok to drive, quite nippy and not too much scuttle shake. In fact quite a lot less than the heap of shyte Megan hard top we had. I would advise anyone thinking of getting a Mk2 to get one as they are pretty reliable things. I would jump at the chance of an estate though.
