Wotcha guys,
long time no post!!!
I'm looking to get a E39 530d SE tourer of 1999 vintage.
Would such a vehicle be accepted amongst your ranks?
Russ

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, if it tickles your fancy then fine. Retro is in the eye of... being older. Personally i'd say no but that's my opinion.
I've said it before and i'll say it again:
Classic = chrome bumpers. Retro = plastic bumpers. Modern = integrated bumpers.
Obviously there is a bit of overlap and this will change eventually, but you get the idea.

Everybody is welcome. I'll warn you though, you may be hankering after a E39 Tourer now but come 6 months you'll have 3 half built projects and no beemer in sight. Just ask Bruce (MysteryMachine) on here when he joined he had a mint BMW Z1 and a modded Delica. Now he's got a Bedford Rascal and and three Mini based Hustlers in various states of dis-repair. It is a disease for which there is no known cure. Matt

Now he's got a Bedford Rascal and and three Mini based Hustlers in various states of dis-repair. Hey, that makes it sound as if I made them that way! The Hustlers are all as I bought them (stashed away for future projects) and the Rascal, while having been neglected for the last year, is about to get some serious TLC. The modded Delica is totally finished and going onto pastures new, the other Delica is finished and in daily service/use/abuse, the MX5 is very, very nearly finished (currently working on it and about 1 weekend from being on the road) and the Fugitive is just waiting for the right type of fan shroud before being put back together (was only looking into this a few hours ago) Don't forget Project X and the red MX5 - one of which was a scratch build and the other almost weighbridge fodder turned cool roadster. Also there is the forthcoming 'A52 Punto', B296 in 1hr and £100 (within budget so far and hopefully within the 1hr timescale if things go well) While I agree it's addictive (very addictive), you make me sound like I can't finish a car. I don't think I am doing too bad compared to a lot of people.... E39's are great as a modern daily and the sort of thing that I'd love to tool around in running back & forth to Area 52 and collecting parts from around the country, but as a 'retro'.....no. Certainly not as I see them anyway.

I don't think I am doing too bad compared to a lot of people.... Like me? ;D I think an e39 is probably too new - even with the 'treatment' - but don't let that stop you. If you want it, do it - even if it's not accepted by the rest of the community.

i would say you need to go back ten more years, people talk about it being something you cant really quantify but I disagree. Metro's bumper analogy is pretty much bang on.

Sorry mate no offence intended, just makes me chuckle when I think that you went from owning/building quite "serious" cars like the Z1 and MR2 turbo to building awesome Rascals and hand built jeeps in quite a short period after joining here. 'It is a disease for which there is no known cure' I laughed cos it's true! We all have it bad! To be honest, I have seen some epic barges, which I shouldn't like but do, in spite of how modern they are. and I know it is not a BMW, but just look at it!

The bumper analogy is about right. My chrome bumpered E30 (the bits that aren't rusty) would be one of the exceptions.

No offense to anyone here but who cares if it's acceptable to forum members?! You'll be driving and living with it, not us!
e39s definitely aren't retro but they're bloody good cars. I had a 03 530d Sport manual saloon (one of the last made) and it was superb. I averaged high 40s MPG (lowest tank was 38, best was 52). They aren't cheap to run though, they were a £30k car new and as such have parts costs associated with them.
Also, don't buy one without FSH. It's vital that the maintenance has been kept up to date or you're looking at mega bucks. There are a whole list of common problems available on the net, but to give you an idea mine cost me about £1500 in repairs over the 18000 miles I did (84k-102k).

I had a mint, 1 owner '98 manual, petrol saloon and it was georgous but absolutely buy with a verifiable service history (not just a book with stamps in) and join the forumBMW5 as this is a very welcoming and clued up group of enthusiasts for all the incarnations of the 5 series. The only downside is that E39's have an odd hub size and stud arrangement so wheel choice is limited..... If you're concerned about retroness (is that even a word?) you could look at E34's, sorry don't have any pictures for you.

i think "retro" involves the owner as well as the vehicle....
if you dare to mod and maintain it yourself, thats pretty retro
I like it when more modern cars slip past the "maintaining book value" stage, and into the "it's mine and i'll do what i want to it...." stage
so whats the plan for the bimmer russell?

I've just taken ownership of a pretty nice one tonight, and I tell ya what, retro is not the word I would use to describe it!
