Huh? Sorry. Don't intend to be flippant all the time. Well thought out dissertation. Tend to disagree though. Thanks, and you're disagreeing without an implication of superiority as well, which is always a good thing if my last rant is to be believed! ;D ;D

Life's way to short to be blinkered! None of my friends I've made through the various car scenes are like that. I just think you get the blinkered type of person in many walks of life. to them! I'm

I've done my time in VW clubs, going back to around summer 2000 and eDubs, then onto TotalVW, VZi plus local clubs such as the sheffield VWOC, Random Nights etc. with the exception of Random Nights (which is about as laid-back as you can get and still be able to drive) i've found them to be a very very small step away from being unbearably prejudiced.
we saw it not so long ago with an advert on vzi for, if i recall correctly, an Allegro (or possibly a marina - some british retro tin). cue a hundred 'eww ewww that's curse word that's rubbish needs scrapping nasty eww' replies. why? because it's different? it could be argued a lot of aircooled VWs are bought 'to be different'. because it's a bad car? no, it was nice and sound and a lot better screwed together than a lot of beetles i've seen. it was because it had the wrong badge on it.... now it doesn't take a lot of imagination to transfer that scenario to humans, yet for that kind of abuse because someone 'doesn't look right' you'd (rightfully) get arrested!
now you'll notice that i rarely buy a car that's not a VW, save for my old Quattro. this i can assure you is mostly coincidence, and my ebay watch list is full of other old clunkers that will barely scrape an MoT. I do like the cars and i do tend to favour them because i know my way around them, but i'd happily drive a ford, or a nice merc, or a peugeot, or.....

So I've supported and disagreed at the same time? I'm on a ROLL! ;D I wonder if the slagging the other breeds is a way for the shallow to maintain a focus on just one?

Does my bias towards Skoda cars make me a bad person? I like a lot of other cars, but I will always rather have a RWD Skud than any other make

The thing about eastern bloc cars is bizarre & interesting...
I remember about 10 years ago going to my first skoda club meet.... nearly put me off for life - here were these daft buggers who genuinely belived that the skoda estelle / rapid was THE BEST CAR EVER MADE....
No sarcasm, not a hint of irony! Oh dear!!!!
For me owning such a car aged 17 was great cos it stuck two fingers up at the 'expected' route of buying a 12 year old fiesta and it was faster, more comfortable and easier to modd... But i would never convince myself for one second that it was 'better' that a new Skoda or a new anything else..........

:)I agree entirely with you there mate, newer Skodas, and indeed many other cars regardless of age are BETTER cars than RWD Skodas in real terms, but for me personally nothing competes with their charm and fun. Somehow these cars just "fit" me. However my self admitted blinkeredness doesn't mean I don't understand why others may not like my choice of car.

It seems to exist everywhere no matter how much money you spend (within reason I suppose).
eg the other weekend I took my girlfriend out for a drive in my dads 1955 MG TF. Obviously being 22 I'm not the typical driver of one of these as itd be far out of my price range. But while I was out I came across a guy (who would have been well over twice my age) in a Jaguar XKSS replica and we both waved and carried on. Later on I came across a guy in a Bugatti Type 35 (or similar, I'm not sure on exact Bugatti specs) (note it was the Dunedin street race, we wouldnt normally see such cars driving around). I waved at him and he looked right through me like I was driving a mid 90s corolla.
It exists even more so within the "old school" vs modern car group even more so though. Theres definately two distinct groups and very seldom does someone have a foot in both. With I find difficult to understand, sure they don't necessarily have to own one but they could at least appreciate the other group

One thing I have noticed is that people into modified cars tend to appreciate standard classics as well, but it doesn't work the other way so much... I wouldn't dream of going up to someone with a standard Sceptre and saying 'you want to lower that mate, paint it satin black and drop a modern engine in'...so why do people think they've got the right to tell me I've ruined MY car... Note: none of the above in any way relates to MY right to slag off tupperware-covered Corsas...
|
|
... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

i'm just coming out of a 15 year aircooled haze where i was told vw's were all that mattered, and you do start to believe it until you have an emperors new clothes moment and realise they are actually curse word! i now drive a volvo t5 and am looking to buy a 944. i love all breeds now and i am sorry for the indescretion of my past! oh yeah spend a week on vzi if you want to witness blinkeredness at its worse! they are real car nazi's, if they were a country we would invade!

I've had my choice of weapon slagged off for years...even by the ruddy Club Committee! I do prefer the Marina/Ital range because they are easy to turn into a real Q-car and with a bit of lateral thinking can be made good. Also, in the same way as Fords have parts interchangability, the BL/Rover parts bin is open and useful......and CHEAP! This does not mean I have blinkered views - looking through the threads on here brings out many a "Blimey...look at that!" moment, but I do draw the line at post 95 BMW's etc....just no personality to the cars whatsoever. What happened in the Club? Our spares officer started selling Ford parts to help cover his costs and the Committee booted him out for not being 'commited' enough to the marque. Luckily these cretins are no longer in the Marina Owners Club and the present bunch are well into modding cars. Thats why i was at RCS last year.....awesome kit on show..... ;D

It's human nature (mainly male). Football. In fact, ANY sport. ("MY" team is better than "YOUR" team). Why not just enjoy the game? Society (YOU are a "Chav". I am superior). Why not just accept people for who they are rather than label them? Music ("REAL" music doesn't have samples in it. Electronic bleep bleep stuff is rubbish). Why not just listen to what you like, and keep an open mind? It's just one person's way of justifying their opinion to themselves, by trying to exert superiority over someone else. Human nature, sadly. Good call, I have had this so often, music, film, cars, fashion etc. I like a lot of different stuff, those blinkered pick something I like to say is $hit, without considering why! well we have that last laugh, cos we see the forest, not just the trees. Leave the sad sacs as they are. And for Toms friends on VC, a 740/760 not exactly cool in society is it? Good work. Have faith though My folks used to go over to the cheshire north wales V.O. Club rallys and met some very good friends there, even when my dad went through his Landcruiser/Land Rover phases. also there was a cool guy in who went to York with a jacked up 144 on knoblies with bull bar who never had much hassle, will find a pic one day....

Theres a difference between having a prefference and being blinkered or a car Nazi. Agreed! There are lots of interesting cars that I wouldn't want to own, but I still want to read about them on here or in car mags, and to see them at shows.

I think this thread sums up why I like this form - variation! There are a lot of cool cars here and I take any interest in something unusual/rare/or something that someone has put alot of time and work into it. Being 20 - it's often laughed when I say I drive a Volvo (most people don't even know what a 360 is). That's soon remedied by taking them for a spin in slippery conditions! Although, I'd say it's actually perceived even worse than when I was driving Skodas. I'm a member of a Volvo forum - and although I haven't posted much here, it's nice to see some different things going on - and other people sharing my views (to my suprise) on other cars I think are quite cool!

(Pulls Psychology A level out of cupboard) The whole thing is to do with the current socio-political state we grow up in. In group/out group mentality, we like to be part of a group and will band together and pick differences to put others in the out group so that we feel secure in our little in group.
However when I say we I mean the narrowminded losers, not the super RR lovers. I was bought up with parents who both loved cars, all makes and models, anything, and I adopted that, personally i feel sad for anyone who can't look to another marque and enjoy finding out about it and the potential different models hold. I'm glad I was born when I was because I've hit the retro scene right on time and am loving every minute, and finding this forum has made things a load better.
Not to bang on but everyone on here is great and in general seems to be much more open minded and I would imagine this extends beyond the car scene. In general people extend their beliefs into each area of their life, and football hooligans are often racists, narrowmindedness blinkers all.
I only hope that our numbers are on the rise and soon we shall rule the world and no make shall be shunned and people will stop mindless vandalism because they can't pronounce the model name.
I'm glad someone brought this up, I had to tell myself off recently for being hard on Max Power kids, thinking about it most of them are the same as us, work hard to make a car into their dream car and then enjoy it. They aren't the low lifes who key your paint or snap your mirrors off. So I try not to laugh at the kitted Saxos (except when they're wheel spinning in the snow because they're peddle to the metal).
Anyway, shutting up now. Sorry. Everyone here rules. Woo.

I'll often ridicule Barried-up Tupperware racers, just the same as people will look at my old bangers and laugh, but regardless of taste and preference, there is a lot of work and money invested in them... so maybe I ought to adjust my perspective a little bit on that score. Right, I'm off to buy a Saxo and take a wad of readies to Halfrauds....
