Just an observation, why are some people obsessed with just one make of vehicle ? and will go out of their way to slag off other vehicles for no given reason... Example - a mate at work is a Ford man, he's got a very very nice mk2 Cortina GT. But for him its " blue oval only ". He doesn't seem to like anything else old, and laughed in my face when i even mentioned a 70's Datsun i've got my eye on......he even turned his nose up at a very clean mk2 Granada 2.8 Ghia X when i mentioned one nearby that was for sale.... I guess he's the kind of person I'm trying to get away from coming on here ? Single make discussion forums are much the same i suppose ?! Just a bit miffed, i just don't understand how you can't even appreciate a good car even if you don't like it ?

i don't understand that mentality either, its all a bit dull if you only like one make of vehicle. its not a problem if you can appreciate otherstuff even if you stick to owning only one kind but to turn your nose up and "slag off" other cars its very sad.

I'm mates with quite a few people in the Dub scene in Newquay, and you get the worst blinkeredness from certain parts of the aircooled scene in my opinion. Not everyone in the VW scene is like that - I know people who also run other retro motors along with their Dubs - but there is a lot of snobbery. I just see it as their loss really... living without appreciating the glories of a slammed, cleaned Mk1 Celica? How could you?!

S.M.S ... Single Make Syndrome ;D Our local club does not suffer from this thankfully but vertually every 'one make' club I have been in does seem to have a group of people that do! No matter what vehcile you have there always seems to be a section/group of people that consider said vehicle to be 'of the eliteist of vehciles'; thus inturn winding other clubs members up! At one show I went to the fellow members on the club stand would not even leave the stand and look at the rest of the show; it was also a waste of time pointing out other vehicles ariving (unless of same make). And these 'loonies' before the day is out will then start on the "my car /these vehicle are worth this much etc" and everything else is just old junk! If ever I come accross this mentallity ever again in a one make club I will stick my subscription form up a club secretaries ...**bad language removed** Sorry but this mentallity really annoys me and at the end of the day we all have the SAME interest ... The enjoyment of motor vehicles! Which is why I like the diversity of this forum

I tend to only do old Fords because I know the parts inside out and I know what bits are interchangeable and I've got a garage full of parts. That's not saying I wouldn't do another make, because I do want to. I'm just scared lol

Automotive snobery in any form is a pet hate of mine, and unfortunately is not confined to the classic car world, its rampent in the car scene in general and the motorbike world. It has crossed my mind that certain types of people (insecure people, I've said it) just like being part of a group but like even more the idea that they can put down other's with the backing of their little group. I might be way off the mark here, but I still find it the most annoying part of the auto scene and is why I rarely go to car shows, bike events or have anything to do with the auto scene in general.

Yeah. this guy sounds like a tunnel visioned nugget. Just cos it was it was probably the one to have when he was a ld, yound man, whatever. he must get criticised from time to time for having an old car. so why not accept other models and makes. Thats why neat RWD escorts are 'one million dollars' each IMO! HoTWire been known to say 'everything has potential' and i'm a great believer in that philosophy. Its what you do with it that counts.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

The only time i've experienced this is when the MG owners asked if they could have there stand moved away from the Anglia owners, I found that a bit offensive. I can't see the point myself, as someone said before none of us would be there if we didn't have the same interests so whats the point in snobbery, we all have our favourites but whats the point in slagging off others cars just for the sake of it. Grr.

The only time i've experienced this is when the MG owners asked if they could have there stand moved away from the Anglia owners, I found that a bit offensive. Eh? there must have been a logistical reason for that surely. Perhaps the spot near the anglia owners' stand was too far from the 'flat cap, beard and real ale' tent.

Further to the comments that everyone else has made, and I do agree with them, has anyone else ever noticed the sort of xenophobia that some classic enthusiasts have as well? I'm sure you know what I mean, you've probably seen a pompous owner of an expensive British classic walk past a Citroen or Renault at a show and say "Ha! French sh*t!" or something like that. It seems even worse with regard to cars that came from the old Soviet Union, it always strikes as a bit odd that someone can forgive rust and mechanical fragility in something made by BMC, Rootes or Standard-Triumph and are quite happy to fix it, yet if it's made by Avtovaz or Skoda then the slightest imperfection will be pointed to as proof that it's a rusty heap beyond salvation. It's a bit unfortunate really because it probably results in a lot of saveable Eastern cars in the UK being left to rot, because people who might otherwise be interested in putting them back on the road are put off by scare stories about them falling to bits in your hands and by the knowledge that they'll be treated like a leper at car shows, this can be seen in the scarcity of Skoda Estelles/Rapids and Lada Zhiguli/Rivas and Nivas these days, and it stops so many fascinating Soviet cars from being imported in decent numbers I think, hence the rarity of Tatras, Volgas and UAZes in the UK.

Until recently it was also applicable to Japanese cars! You're right there, you used to see plenty of abuse pointed at Datsuns, I reckon the drift scene might have helped matters there though, that and films like Kill Bill and videogames like Gran Turismo, these days Japanese culture's much more fashionable than it used to be and that has a knock on effect on their cars, now that all the kids want an R34 Skyline or Impreza even the more retro stuff's more in vogue, what we need is films, videogames and the like involving old Soviet cultures, then all the kids'll be cruising in Trabants, after all you can already get dire bodykits for those! ;D ;D

Indeed, the regular saloon won't be enough, to really impress the girls you'll have to have the deluxe edition with its very slightly less spartan trim and deluxe badges! ;D ;D

Then you get the people that turn their noses up at anything FWD... I know that it's the old 'real hot rod Vs shopping trolley' mentality, but times have changed. A good example is the really clean cream Jetta that was posted on here a while ago... an Escort with exactly the same mods would be welcomed with open arms I must admit it's this attitude that makes me reluctant to modify a 'modern' car as my daily driver... I don't want to be seen as a Tesco car park muppet The great thing about this site is it brings together all the different strands... 8-)LONG LIVE R-R

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

The VW scene is terrible for this - a lot have a particular problem with Ford, possibly due to the fact that the fast ford of the day was always faster than the equivalent quick VW, eg. 16v/G40/G60 vs. RS turbo, or Golf Rallye vs. Sierra Cosworth
I'm sticking with the one make at the moment because its what i know. I fully intend to diversify when finances allow - theres a whole load of retro metal i need to experience
