Some rat rods are cool as a polar bears whatnot, but the build of some of them makes me want to run and hide, or at least hope they are never used on public roads...

I know the stereotype "J" is little, but HTF do they see through those windscreens on the seriously low chopped coupes? The roof space looks lower than the body, and the bod is lower than the wheels?
They must be lieing down.

copying some of the more extreme American rat rods. How does a 6'2" yank fit in one!

I remember recently about a couple of members saying how do they get on in Japan with old cars/modified cars due to 'rumours' of a super strict equivalent of the M.O.T (a rumour I too used to believe until recently)? Perhaps these pictures will put-to-bed those myths

Well, theres no myth to it. My brother lives in Japan and when his 7 year Old Carina needed to get Shaiken so it could be legally used on the roads again it was going to cost as much as buying a 4 year old car would. So guess what he did? Same as everybody else does pretty much. Shaiken is what kills off old cars in Japan. Its a cross between a mega-MOT and a huge road tax bill.
Many of these rods are based on imported vehicles same as in the UK or Europe. Japan charges mental import duty on foreign cars though. If you have the money you can do anything anywhere really.
Bro has lived out there for crikey, 8 years or more now, and I ask him about the Japanese car scene and he says "there isn't much of one really". You see the pictures on the net and stuff in the magazines makes it seem like theres a massive car culture and drifting on every corner, 1000 BHP Skylines on every high street and rat rods all over. Truth is they are a very conservative nation. Mad stuff like this is a minority sport like it is over here.
