Remember that the end of the socket weighs more than the handle.
So don't let go of the socket end as I did when fixing the exhaust to the Pug the other weekend... curse word, my nose still smarts a little... gravity is a curse word.

Am I allowed to post again?
Never mind
If you are working blind in an unaccessible area (I'm thinking - Dizzy cap on a carlton four pot here but there are other applications!!)
Tie a bit of string to the tool you a using and loop the other end to your wrist - when you drop the tool as you fequently will do you won't have to go hunting under the car again for it every time!!!

if you need to lie under the car for any reason, wear goggles, as rust and mud stings when it gets in your eye

Those little magnetic things you can buy for picking up tools when you drop them don't work when you've dropped it inside something made of steel (ie car engine). Doh. What you need is extremely long and flexible arms!

When removing steering wheels, DON'T TAKE THE CENTRE NUT RIGHT OFF until the wheel is "loose" on the column. Loosen the nut, then bash the wheel from behind to free it. Don't take the nut off, then pull the wheel towards you, because when it comes off you will be pulling it towards your face at 100mph, breaking your nose, and your glasses, and bleeding all over your t-shirt and interior. People will mock you for AT LEAST ten years. So far. ;D ;D ;D Did that when I was about 15, my Dad didn`t stop laughing for hours

Don`t buy cheap breaker bars - they don`t half make a loud bang when they snap !

Don't leave tools in the engine bay, because when it rains, and you shut the bonnet, and go inside for a nice warm cuppa you will forget at least one thing you left in there! Pliers + Timing belt = Big, loud and expensive bang!

don't take the cover off your timing belt.... Yes it spins and looks 'cool'... but the cover was there for a reason.

When you change the oil remember to put the sump plug back in Oh, and never ever get your hand wedged between a Mini engine and the subframe........ Always get clearance from the wife / gf / boss before you start ANY work on the car.

Always get clearance from the wife / gf / boss before you start ANY work on the car. BUT never get clearance from the wife / gf / boss before you buy a car, as you know what the answer will be!

I've got one but i don't know if i really want to be telling the world about it.
Oh what the hell.
When changing the oil always make sure you've remebered to drain out the old oil before putting in the new stuff and going on a road test.
Oh how everyone laughed as i got towed back in the yard and had to spend the next 2 hours cleaning out the intercooler and intake manifold before the customer came to pick up his van.
Luckily he saw the funny side and the smoke stopped after 20 miles so it wasnt all bad.

oooh ooh ooooooh
"when changing oil, make sure the oil container in the corner is actually full instead of just assuming it is before draining the old stuff out, otherwise you're left with an oilless car and a walk to the nearest car parts emporium"

When tracking down non-starting problems work methodically. Sudden jumps of inspiration can waste a lot of time chasing down something that it may not be. Check starter motor (ie turning over), Check electrics: spark, leads, dizzy, plugs. Check air flow. If all fine check fuel, carbs/injectors then if no joy work back to fuel pump.
After all (only) 3 things are needed to make a car start if its turning over, air, fuel and spark. Or at least thats what I was taught and it's served me well so far.

when renting a unit, don't let friends who have no respect for your property come over to fix their cars, and if they do make them pay you, because they will definately make a mess, break something, or annoy you into helping them fix their cars.

Wear sturdy gloves. Sore knuckles is not a good thing. And heres one for the PO of the Golf GTI i have: when changing oil, empty the old oil out first! A golf does not like 9 litres of oil ;D On the other hand, the car might have cost more if it ran properly when i boght it ;D
