In fact, I know a film that is all about driving. It has mayhem, destruction, cops, music, some bird in a Ferrari - all as part of an enormous roadtrip. And the lead car is a George Barris "Kustom". Holiday rooooOOooOOOooaaaAAAaaad!

Max's wife Jesse did not die. Here's my take: This series of movies was not serious sci-fi, with a tightly knit background story. It's all very vague and weird. If it was to make sense, then you'd be asking a million-and-a-half other questions regarding logical flubs. It's just a sketchy loosie goosie action thriller franchise. Attempts to load it up with "meaning" are like sounding out meaning from the Beatles "Magical Mystery Tour" album. Ultimately impossible. Just enjoy it. Spot on, exactly what I think. I read through all the details I could find, and the only clues were that it was always intended to follow on from thunderdome. The two cars in the press release are just tasters of what is to come, but then they may not even make it into the film (not even found a location yet so nothing on tape), all just speculation at the moment. All I know is I cannot wait until 2012 when it is due to be released lol

Probably not the best of all time, but still a pretty good film, one I never hear anyone else mention. It wasn't even on imcdb until I sent them some shots. King of the Mountain about the street racing scene in Los Angeles in the 70s, with Harry Hamlin, Dennis Hopper and loads of others I've never heard of. Some pretty good racing scenes, some terrible 70s music. Some shots: Oh my god! For years I have been asking people about this film and nobody has ever recognised it. Nice one. I always thought it was called Dead Man's Curve. I had it on VHS off the telly and watched it many times. Oh dear, just watched a few bits on YouTube and it's total curse word of course. Charlie

I have to say that I grew up with all these films taped off the box and obsessed about them, rewinding and replaying the best bits, slo-mo the slo-mo crash at the end of Dirty Mary Crazy Larry, watched Two Lane Blacktop and Vanishing Point over and over again, had loads of others that I hoarded.
But sick as it sounds the best car film of all time is definitely Initial D. It's a Hong Kong classic, the drifting is great, the pointless love story and drunk old dad just add to it.
For a great Initial D drift check out the end title sequence at 4.55:

I've heard of the first two, just not the rest of them. On "Two Lane Blacktop", doesn't it also star James Taylor, another sixties music bloke?

It's a pretty dire film with some shocking fashion and filming guffs (they shot an entire chase at night and then realised all you could see where lights). However the end chase is pretty epic and well worth checking out.
