OOOOOOOOH. Controversial!!!! 20 years ago these were the darlings of the 'filofax & red braces' yuppie types. These days you can pick them up for pennies. But which one would you most like to find in your stocking this chrimbo!? The front-wheel-drive golf with it's masses of 'styling' potential? Or the rwd snorter from BMW for some old-school tail-out action? Here's some pics to help make up your mind.... (^what a honey^ ;D )

from a performance point of view one of the greatest let-downs of my life was at a track day at Mallory park nearly two years ago - i had not long got back from Iraq and was looking forward to taking my tuned 1.8 16v golf round with a bunch of other golfs and a few E30 M3s.
I was gutted to see that only one of the M3s was quicker than me in a straight line, and that the golf was embarassing them on the corners too.
So when the golf got it's 2042cc 16v engine i used to take great pleasure in finding an E30 M3 to play with....

Difficult to choose, love them both. Can't beat a Mk2 Golf 16v for cheap thrills in my experience but I've not yet owned an E30. I fully expect to own both at once at some point as I don't think I'd like to sell my Golf to get one but would love an E30 with some decent power, maybe stripped out racer style. Everytime I see an E30 M3 is makes me seriously doubt my VW tendencies and want to switch camps and get one, probably will at some point!
