Mmm - tricky one this.
If we were comparing like for like, i,e 1.8 8v GTi verses a 1.8/2.0l E30 - then the VW would win anyday as the smaller engine BMWs just don't have the power to make the RWD chassis fun (even the iS) And I hate the way the steering is rather 'inert' about the centre on RWD cars.
However if we were comparing flagship models - G60 Rallye V's M3, then the M3 wins it no question (though I still like the G60)
I must admit though I was rather dissapointed with the performance of the E30 M3 too. I raced one a couple of times up at Santa Pod a few years ago when I had my diesel E36, I was expecting him to cream me down the hallowed 1/4 mile but instead he only just pipped me both times
