Right this has been on my mind for a while now and I want you guys to give me your view.
MG made the MGC, just like the BGT but it had the Straight 6 motor, not many were made due to the public not really seeing the point and the fact the car had poor handling.
Now I have one of these motors(its actually the 2.5 Injection model from a TR6) sitting doing nothing. Now my question is doI fit this motor and fix the woes the original MGC had, i.e. move the engine further back away from the front suspension.
As for the engine, its perfect and was running like a dream a weekend ago. This idea is not set in stone as I love the B series motor and believe it has more potential than people think.
So over to you what do you think.
P.S. Diff is done now all welded up and boy is it fun. Cheers Dom

You will have to totally redisign the front suspenion, won't you. As BMC had to do with the original C because 6 Cyl. engine wouldn't fit due to normal crossmember set up etc.

Sounds like a good idea. What are the limitations of the triumph unit though? IIRC a 2500PI wasn't a massively fast machine (although pretty capable in its day...). If you wanted to go for a 6-banger, would a BMW lump make more sense? Tougher, more powerful & more potential surely? 3.2 Evo MGB?? YES PLEASE! I'm sure if your triumph engine is as good as you say, you could sell it and finance the costs involved straight off. Just a thought, like.

Beat me too it Nick, my next thought was to sell the motor. Only reason why I have moved away from the "modern engine" route is down to electrics, as they are not really my strong point. Give me a Stripped old fashioned motor any day . Twincam, I have just looked at a friends MGC and yes the front cross member is highly modified, but from what I can see and measuring up the Motor, modification will be cus down due to the position of the motor being pushed back a few Inches, Shorten the Prop, and use the Gear box from the TR or better still buy a Modified Type 9. Also by doing this I am of course shifting the weight to the center of the car more so, which should aid with the nasty handling the MGC had. If I go ahead then a requirment of better front suspension so Frontline would be my point of call for that.

If you want to go down the '6 Banger' route and you want to keep the front suspension standard (no 'straight 6' engine), plus you don't want to get involved with modern electronics... ...why not get a Ford V6 Essex engine/powerunit? Just a thought (I think due to carburettor/airbox height clearance problems with V6 Essex you will need a 'bulged' bonnet; ala MGC Type.)

Yeah, but if changing from the British lump, why go German? an RB20, 25 or 26 would go down well, as would a 1JZ or 2JZ I imagine the likes of which would be pretty rare over your side of the cosmic beach ball.

Humm whats the weight difference between Essex V6 and the Trummy 6 Banger?
Front Suspension is not really a Problem as I have the resources aid this modification.

Actually the bad handling was more down to the 15inch Crossplys (remember 'B' had 14inch wheels whereas 'C' had 15inch). You will find decent tyres (with slightly lower profile) will improve a 'C's handling no end.

Kyteler, I reckon you could pick up a Nissan RB or some decent-spec Toyota unit here quite cheap, you just have to look for the strange grey import saloon sitting unloved in the corner of a yard. A lot of people probably don't realise the engines would be similar to Skyline/Supra.
Case in point being the Toyota Cresta and C33 Laurel hardtop I saw in yards a year or two back.
What about a Nissan VG30 V6? A bit more compact perhaps.

I don't really know J motors that well, but as long as its smaller than a V8 then they are all contenders

The V6 from a 300sx would be a good choice I think,.. seriously powerful too ... You sure you can't be convinced to squeeze in a Lexus V8 ??

Mmmmmm.....Lexus 1UZFE...keep eying up the one in my grandad's LS400. He keeps giving me strange looks You could get about 200HP out of the straight six, if you really tried - or more if you supercharged it, which has been done several times now. Seems a bit of a nonsensical upgrade though, if you know what i mean - not much power for a lotta work

I think if you're going to go to all the trouble to improve handling by moving the engine position / altering the suspension, you might as well put a modern powerplant in it..... Just had a thought - 3.0 V6 Ford Duratec

The straight 6 fitted to the MGC wasn't the Triumph straight 6 ,it was the old Austin 3 litre engine. They were in the Austin-Healy 3000's

TBH all sound like a load of grief to me, and when you’ve finished you’ll still have a horrible all-iron pushrod boat anchor trying to drag you into the nearest ditch. You can try to mount the engine well back but whatever front shockers you put on are going to have to fight against the colossal inertia of one of those lumps, it’s going to be quite a war for them. Overall it doesn’t sound very appealing, to me anyway.
What about a Rover 2600 SD1 for a straight six? At least it has an alloy head and overhead cams, and it will come attached to a 77mm SD1 ‘box which is the norm for the V8 conversions I believe so should fix in your car OK. I think they are 150 bhp as standard. Plus you can buy a whole SD1 with one in for £150. Lovely twin SU’s too.
Having said that it is probably one of the least sporty engines ever made, might be too tall as well with its OHC, and might also seize its camshaft every 2500 miles so some room for improvement perhaps.

The healey engine is a boat anchor, originally from a truck! its all cast iron unless you get an ally head = very expensive.
I used to work at rawles motorsport on healey's, my boss raced an aluminium body version. He took me out at lunch in it once, quite fast and noisy, but considering the amount of money spent its just not worth it.
The VG30 is a good capable engine that will fit better in the space.

Humm I was just thinking that prior to your post. Issue is space and is it worth the modification time. Would sound frugging sweet though humm
