Having no desire to own a new car and from the early 70 s ran what i can afford i always owned retro cars for ease of maintenance plus it was and is a great hobby which you want to do or you don't. Inspired by my late brother enthusiasm often overtook common sense but if i want to lay on my drive in sub zero temperatures then i feel happy doing it. Neighbours think of me as the bloke with the different car ( usually the oldest ) but its my madness that keeps me sane. What inspired you.

My Father talking about moving from being a Mod to owning all mannor of cars (before I was born of course). It really started to hit me and the bug was taken when old Cine films came out (i was about 12) and it showed him in his TR4a and MG Midget, and then to old photos from the 70s with him spraying his mates e-type Pink etc.
I think to be honest its in my blood and not a minute goes by without me thinking about retro motors, even the missus has now jumped on it.
WIN WIN WIN.

When I got married, my wife had passed her test, but not actually ever driven or insured a car. Quotes for modern cars were mad - circa £1000 plus.
We saw an MGB GT 1974 advertised in the local paper and bought that (in the rain). Insurance was £300 a year for limited miles. We had fun repairing the car and sorting the seats etc. We sold this when it needed serious welding and bought a 1969 MG Midget - this was fun too, but again rust was quick to set in. After this numerous Porsches, Mercedes 280CE (W123).
So much character.

I'm to tight to buy a new car, i'd rather wait till whatever car it is that i've always fancied has reached its rock bottom price and then buy one, i've had a lot of proper expensive (when new) executive and sports cars for peanuts that way. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

I used to justify it by saying that it was cheaper than a modern car.. and it could be. But the amount I choose to spend on my car makes it easily as expensive to own a 20+ year old car that I can do my own maintenance and repairs on as a 3 year old Clio or something. I guess I just like the simplicity, the solid feel, the ease of maintenance, good looks... of an older car. I got into them because I thought beetles looked cool when I was younger and entered into the world of the VW scene. Once I learnt that a car with a radiator actually could be cool, I ended up about where I am now.. with Triumphs and Volvos and Polos and things like that ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

When I was born, my folks were trying to think of a second income aside from their teaching to keep me in nappies. They set up A1 Motors, Canvey Island - buying, selling and doing-up cars from auctions. They only did it for a couple of years, but from then on throughout my childhood my dad always had interesting cars - Alfa 33, Saab 900 Turbo, mkI Cavalier 2000GLS, mkIV Cortina 2.3, Citroen CX Pallas, Citroen XM, Austin Princess, Mazda Montrose... so I had no choice really. Retro's in my blood. ;D

i often think of Frank Zappa.
Aside from that, just being different inspired my choice of cars, when i was 17-21 i could afford anything i wanted within reason, but i bought a 20 quid banger and fixed it up myself. I already was a good ish mechanic with my own and before that my dads bikes. So i bought cars that interested me. nowadays i am semi skint and still like a car and bike i can tinker with myself and it will be different to most normal peoples choice of transport.

Mother of invention = Necessity. My story in short. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) spot on there Norm i choose to drive an older car - as i was sick and tired of the repair / maintenance costs of my last 3 newer cars. i drive a cortina - as this was the first car i drove ( at 13) if i had driven a beetle as my first car - i might be driving one now.

Foolishness ;D When I passed my test and turned 18 I had a choice.. have my mums Nova or sell it and buy something for myself. I always hated the Barry Boys in their Novas at school and thought they looked chuffing awful so sold the Nova, got £500 and brought an unseen, non running Triumph Spitfire! Since then its been part love part necessity. I'm perpeptually broke so buy cheap cars.. I also buy simple cars I can work on myself and of course I like to be different. I wouldn't have it any other way now!

For me cars are like time machines, I like new cars but in a clinical practical way. Older cars take you back to when they were made and trigger all sorts of great emotional feelings.
The journey for me began way back when I was a kid watching American TV shows and movies, I see one of those cars now and it takes me right back to being eight years old.

Seeing a red capri parked fairly frequently at the methodist church down the road from me. I knew from then (13 or so maybe), I had to have one some day.

When i was a kid, my dad only ever having a budget no bigger than £1000, that had to buy a car, and I'm talking one car every 3-4 years, not every few months or when he got bored. Which HAD to be cheap and easy to fix! Better still, not need fixing at all! I saw us (luckly) have a good few VERY VERY reliable and cheap cars while i was a child, i guess from that point it was instaled into me, u don't need a brand new car, or spend thousands on a car to have a good reliable or even cool car (yes, i was the cool kid when i dad got the 2.0 Sierra, because it was a 2.0 and when ya 11 that's all that matters when ya mates dad has a 1.4 astra).
Fast forward a good few years and even now i'm finding old and cheap cars just as reliable, of not MORE reliable than modern counterparts. So for this reason, i (being a tight sod) cant see reason for spending £5000 on a car that will do the same job as my £50 Sierra

It started in 1958 when my grandfather bought his first car, a 1937 Ford V8 Tudor...he's been into old cars since then, and so have my father always too, so I've just grown into it. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)
