I've always liked "different" cars, that's why my first car was a Skoda Rapid - everyone else had Mk3 Fiestas, Corsas and the like, but I wanted something no-one else had.
I was car-less for some years due to being a skint London student then going to work abroad. When I came back I needed something sensible to get to work in... then I saw the Mercedes stacklight (not practical or sensible) but I fell in love and bought it. In the dark. On Xmas eve. I've been buying daft old cars ever since! This place hasn't helped any... ;D
I like old cars because new ones don't excite me. I like the surprise and cameraderie you get when you pass another one on the road.

Stacklights not practical or sensible? I'd say that they are one of the best dailies ever built, just because they ARE so practical and sensible...

ebay! seeing all sorts of old school stuff i remembered as a kid up for not much money and resenting the way most cars are dull and soulless these days and harder to work on.....

My father had some beautiful cars - but it was actually when I went to school in Australia and my class mates all had old bangers as their first cars - old Holden Utes, fiat 600's, a 1960's original Mustang. I was a spoilt brat - but not that spoilt, I had a bicycle.... and covetted their cars.
Fortunately my wife was a designer and so loves the retro look - and having lived in Italy her first cars were Fiat 126s - followed by VDP 1300 and Mini Clubman estate. When I got the first Aston she was disappointed it wasn't a DB2...
My son has his eyes set on a VW splitty, but at the prices they go for - he isn't that spoilt either!

Stacklights not practical or sensible? I'd say that they are one of the best dailies ever built, just because they ARE so practical and sensible... Yeah! I suppose what I should have said is that they are not seen as practical or sensible by a majority of the public - a 3 year old Ford Focus with warranty and good fuel economy would be a typically practical, sensible car to them. But if I drove one of those I think my soul would wither and die! ;D The Benz has been more-or-less faultlessly reliable for the 7 years I've owned it. Only ever broken down twice - once cos the thermostat seized and once cos I'm a fool and knocked the battery warning light out and broke the charge circuit. ;D

I'm tight ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Simples..... Oh, and I grew up in the 70's/80's and my Dad had Mini's, Escorts, an Amazon estate and a Mk 2 Black Granada (that did it for me) And my Uncle had Mk1 RS2000, Mk2 RS2000, 3.0 Ghia Capri and a 2.8i. It was always going to happen. I've never bought a car that was less than ten years old. Actually, I lie, I've had two, one we won't mention ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) and my first car which was a Cortina! It was 9 years old when I bought it Having said that SWMBO Has a nearly new car every year! She doesn't share my "Will I make it or not" sense of adventure!! And that's why I love Retros!! It's an adventure ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

I blame my dad. He spent the 80's living with £50 auction wrecks that had a bit of ticket, and often needed the services of the local mobile gas welder to put them through the next one.
From the late 70's he had a beetle, a Singer Vogue Estate and a Mk3 Cortina estate. Then into the 80's he had a P6 V8 that never broke down but always smelled of petrol, a Chrysler 180, a VX490, and Wolsley 6 (Landcrab), then eventually his first taste of then modern, a Renault 20TS, which was structurally better, but very unreliable especially in hot weather when it wouldn't start.
So, naturally when I finally passed my test as a 31 year old, I bought a Skoda 120L, then a Favorit, then a Saab 900 T16, then a Celica ST185 GT4, then a Saab 900 T16 convertible, then a Rangie on LPG.
My kid brother who passed at 17 did similar with a Bedford HA van, a bunch of MK1 and MK2 escorts, and MK2 Capris, MK4 Cortinas because they were mans cars, a Renault Fuego, a Skoda 120L, a Datsun 120Y. He has gone all sensible with 2 year old Ford and VX hatches for his wife and a diesel Shogun for him, and while I'm currently driving an IS200 under pressure from the missus(Y reg nearly 9 years old I might add) and the soon to be ex missus a Yaris. When I'm off the mortgage and ready to move out, I'm considering buying a hearse, rather than renting a van to move all my junk, tat, tools and furniture out of the house.
Some things never change.

I'm blaming my dad also!! he had triumph acclaims when i was a kid, then he had a volvo estate, plus 3 others used as spares cars! its the feel when you get in an old car compared to moderns, the basic-ness and the smell!

I share my sentiments with many people on this thread. Regarding my reasons, like many they are most likely aligned to Rav's and Nathan's reaons. My dad had a Mini Clubman 1425GT which was great, an MG Metro Turbo which worried cars 10 years older than it (like the Rover 216 GSi), but they looked different to the sea of modern stuff. Him talking about his times didn't help either. I guess for me I didn't want to be bored too much. Especially when you consider bar the MGB I drove a Volvo S40 1.8 all the time (I think being jacked up on Valium would honestly have been more enticing). The MGB was dirt cheap to insure, easy to work on and it's a little different to other dailes. Same goes for the MG Midget, Escort Cabriolet, VW Beetle to some degree (sorry Veedub fans!) and now the 205 and Porsche. The latter two (and current two) manage to make driving an event, even the 306 Meridian does (something my mate commented on as he sold it to me when he got his 55 Plate Golf...). Yes maybe I'm a tight ![](http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/underwire/2009/11/fox_60.jpg) but whilst I love driving I do have other interests too which I'd rather have over a new car (going abroad, trying new things etc.).

Being a child of the 50s (yup, I’m a Saga-lout) it was partly what my Dad drove as a sales rep (Austin A50, Hillman Minxes and the then new and radical Ford Cortina Mk1); I guess they sowed the seeds. I remember walking past the Ford Dealership in Bedford on the way to school in 1966 and drooling over an Ermine White Mk3 Zodiac on a turntable in the showroom, I was late for school that day. What really got me into old stuff was when we moved to South Africa in ’68 when I was 10 years old – Dad got promoted to Sales Manager out there. Imagine the roads filled with 50s and 60s British, European and Yank tin. The lifestyle was very much American influenced too. My best mate Dave’s older brother used to read a magazine with funny looking but cool cars called Hot Rod. He had a LWB Beach Buggy which he used to take is to the drive-in movies in. I thought the buggy was neat but the bug bit deep the day we were at the drive-in burger-joint in town in my Dad’s brand new Pontiac Parisienne land-yacht. Alongside parks a white ’40 Ford Coupe with fat and skinny slot mags (still my favourite alloy wheel). Suddenly I realised that the cars in Hot Rod were real; Dave’s bro lost some of his Hot Rod magazine collection soon after! We came back to England in 1971 as Dad decided he really wanted to run a pub. The pub also had the village chip-shop in the car park. One day I saw a black Ford Pop with slot-mags parked in the yard. The obsession was re-ignited and I swore to myself that I’d have a Pop like that one day. I bought the very same car off the builder (by then a very good mate) in 1983; it’s in the garage here now. ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png)

A Mini Magazine I read in a mates house. I had only really been into modern cars up until then (16), but I was amazed by how much could be done to the cars etc. That started my trip down retro lane.

I started out at 16 getting interested in Lambrettas & Vespas just because I loved the look of them...that pretty much kicked off my love for the retro stuff. I then went a few years without anything due to moving a lot and being hideously in debt until a few years ago when I came into some money, was settled & had space for a car... so naturally I bought something old - a '61 Ford Consul - then, whilst browsing eBay I came across a Datsun Cherry and remembered my dads old pride & joy... a Nissan Cherry Turbo, and that was it... I was hooked. I have to one day own a Sunny too as I have a vivid memory of seeing one in East London as a child at a petrol station and someone had used some of those old gold matal letter stickers you used to get for house numbers/names and had it reading "Nissan Sunny JIM"... still makes me chuckle to this day and I hope to recreate it ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

The price of new cars in norway, and the fact that "new" cars look boring to me, pretty much got me into the retro scene ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Didnt hurt to have a dad who was into old cars in his time either ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Example: 1991 Lexus LS400 here costs around 20000 pounds ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

They were all NEW cars when I started out ,in fact many that you guys use hadn't even been built then. My first big project was a Ford Consul Capri and it was a 10 year old car ... I bought another last weekend ,it's 45 years old this time ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png)
