I have a plan ;D My daughter just happens to turn 17 while at the gathering next year and I want to give her a car at the show, among other ideas Can anybody tell me what retro cars are in group 1 or 2, ie cheap insurance, not scene taxed, and good as a first motor? thanks

Mk2 Polo. Solid, reliable, cheap, not quite scene taxed yet but will be soon so a possibility of making a little money as well Oh and most of them are still pretty solid!

small engined mk2 fiesta. cheap as chips to buy at the moment and pretty reliable, bit crusty as most retros are though.

as above, polo/fiesta. Polo because lots of wheels fit, fiesta because its a fiesta and capri wheels fit!
The polo might be slightly more reliable, but they are both the same sort of beast. A mate of mine owned a mk2 polo for 18 months and a mk1 fiesta for 4 years. The polo needed a petrol tank (which he fitted himself, and it fell off! was £80) and the fiesta needed a thermostat housing (£14). He'd never even changed (or probably even checked) the oil in either of them - I wish I dropped on cars like this!
I've owned 5 mk2 fiestas, but only one of them ever saw the road. Easy to work on, and they seem to just keep working.

another vote for mk2 fiesta, they're a bit less common than the Olops, too. As said though, they tend to get a bit crusty. :/
Depending on budget though you could go for something a lot more unique, though.

I'll buy the car if you buy the insurance Polo and Fezzer were first ideas had a look at groups and most of them are gp 3 and over Only a few 997s are gp 2 none in gp 1 that is unless the system is only including newer models?

As a first car id be going with as already mentioned, the Polo or fiesta, both good choices, cheap and reliable. Other than those what about a Nissan Micra? Metro/rover 100, Fiat panda? Or are we looking at something older? As its a first car id be going for something known for being reliable cos i know what its like to have an unreliable mini as a first car, soooooo pants.

budget is a difficult question, I' like a free one no really, upto about 500 at a guess probably less as it wont need an mot or tax as it wont be needed for a year reliability is quite important as it has to get there and back at least

Got to be a fiat panda, as its group 1 insurance, easily does 50mpg, and is soo easy to repair even a girl can fix it ;D

I got my daughter a 1.0 mk3 polo at 17. She put 25000 miles on it in 2 years, then got a newer polo instead. Don't know about groups particularly, but it was cheap enough to insure. And I found the "add dad" discount for extra drivers sometimes puts the quote up instead of down..

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in
