It sometimes baffles me how one job can lead to another and another ad infinitum . This morning I thought id check the kingpins on the Singer. Heres the shortened version of events . Drivers side- fit zip tie which helps the seal stay in place = fine Cause = Passenger side = seal all stretched and not good . Effect = remove kingpin to fit new seal Cause = carrier base very worn / pitted with two PTFE washers and a shim fitted , pin corroded Effect = fit that new carrier I found yesterday Cause = trackings now out Effect = As the tracking needs doing anyway il fit the Fiesta / stainless rods that are in the loft . Cause = whilst I'm here il check the brakes . Effect = drivers side OK but shoes low - fit new shoes on drivers side . Effect = go to fit new shoes on passenger side Cause = wheel cylinder leaking Effect = Change both cylinders and shoes on passenger side End result = Brakes feel wibblepoo as the shoes arnt bedded in plus Steerings twitchy because the trackings out THE END  The cause The effect New bits And more new bits

this is how things get complicated, right?
The wife smelled antifreeze and saw some smoke (steam) when she got to work...so I went down and checked it out....
cause: coolant to heater core hose deforming from age and leaking a little effect: coolant had been slowly working its way down along the transmission and dripping on the control arm bushing softening it enough to begin getting sloppy result: new control arm bushings
cause: I was under the car because of the control arm issues and saw that both control arms had old and tired bushings....replaced them all effect: tighter steering, no torque steer, feelin the love....and you can now feel and hear the drive shaft that is clicking on full lock....replace drive shaft
cause: fill coolant level and test system effect: cooling fans not working!
and so it goes, and goes, and goes!
I like your progress...looks good. Ill bet the car will feel much better!

Great thread! Just made my way through from the start! I love that you've owned it for such a long period of time! So many awesome touches done to it, I really really want another imp now, one that will actually see the road!! Maybe one day, although they do appear to start becoming a lot harder to find!

Managed to get some uber rare 13 inch Genuine Trico speedblades for it - they actually wipe the window "1968 The Speed Wiper blade - used a wire primary lever in order to reduce blade wind resistance and keep the blade from rising off the windshield at high speeds. The first vehicle to include the "Speed Blade" innovation was a Mazda Cosmo produced by Toyo Industries " also fitted to Lotus , Jaguar E types and Rolls Royce as standard equipment ( but obviously much longer ones )

Testing this new upgraded non electronic ignition system on my Singer for someone which still uses points ( I have upgraded ones of these to fit but want to see how NOS Lucas ones cope first ) , Special 12V - 45,000V secondary ignition coil which is ballast controlled to 9V ( 45,000V is a bit high for points but these of course are only on 9V now ) , External condenser so none in the dizzy . Added to which ive fitted my made up LT lead . Reason being is to hopefully do away with cheap junk Chinese copies of ignition parts that seem to fail more than they work , time will tell but so far there has been an improvement in starting , revs and smoothness . Coil cover is me - its not actually running on JD

Did 60 miles yesterday , it revs quicker , it seems to have more grunt , engine is smoother and tickover rock steady so all in all initial results are excellent

Made a small mounting bracket for the external condenser this morning and used a brass bolt for its earth = better connection

Not much to report , shes been running a tad warm in this weather so i fitted a new rad which has solved it , seeing as the old one was probably 20 years old its done well . Took the opportunity to respray the rad cowls whilst it was all out . Fitted new specially made uprated HT leads to go with the other electricery bits . And finally went for a drive

New ignition set is still working perfectly , starting is now so instant I'm not even sure the starter actually turns at all . Some pics from a recent trip out :

The only other thing I've done is move the rear plate down and do away with the border , moving it down opened up the top centre vent which on an Imp and its potential cooling issues is always a good thing . However this meant the bottom of the lower digits were slightly obscured by the towel rail thing on the bumper. Options were move the plate back up or lower the rail so after much thought and lots of modding i did the later and lowered the rail by 20mm . Tricky to tell from the pics though As it is now As it was

Well the wipers on this has always been a bit slow , with the new speed blades fitted they do actually wipe the screen well but its all a bit slow . I could fit 2 speed from a Maxi but that involves finding a motor , altering the internal gears and fining the right switch . Seeing as i work for a rewind company a plan was hatched to rewind the armature for more torque and maybe a bit more speed , the problem has been they wipe fine in really heavy rain but the drag on the blades during a drizzle is such that they are quite slow . Anyway a spec was eventually drawn up after getting the original Lucas one , armature rewound and fitted in . Its slightly quicker but more importantly they don't slow down much even if the screen is dry . Armature before rewind with Lucas spec Now rewound Semi fitted

Wiring sorted , new supply for the wipers and also for the fuel and temp gauges both on individual fuses ( number 4 on the right although as yet unlabelled ) - old wiper supply is now dead with the ends cut off . Also tested the wiper motor pot and found a slight earth at 110V which turned out to be the sleeving on the field coil so replaced this with some new yellow stuff - passed a 500V test after this Hopefully thats the end of the saga Fial fuse box lay out - we hope Wiper motor pot tested , repaired and fitted Need to label the blank space on the cover now Heated washers ready for winter New sleeving on the wiper motor field coil
