I've realised recently that since driving older cars, I've gained a few habits ;D -I always cancel indicators manually after using them -I usually park facing downhill in case I have to bump start the car -I find it difficult to drive power assisted cars now, as I tend to steer them/brake too violently! - checking the temp guage more than the speedo -I get worried driving a car that doesn't seem to make any sound thats all I can think of at the mo, anyone else developed any retro symptoms?

- I leave long braking distance gaps. - I wander all over the road avoiding sunk manhole covers and pot holes. - I sometimes forget which side the handbrake is on.

Driving along with main beam on all the time. It's amazing, just HOW did we manage back in the days of dynamos and sealed beam headlights? Last time I drove the Oxford at night I found myself slipping straight back into the old ways, peering into the gloom with the little blue light on on the dash.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Handbrake on the right hand side of the dash in the Merc.
I quite often left foot brake so i can cover the throttle to keep the car from stalling, even though generally they don't.

I find it difficult to drive power assisted cars now, as I tend to steer them/brake too violently! I so rarely drive modern cars but this is the only one that springs to mind - I have a bad habit of standing them on the front bumper the first time I touch the brakes! Any other 'issues' are purely due to the difference in controls between other old cars. ^^ did the handbrake thing ALL the time when I was rolling the hunter why the HELL did rootes put it there?!?! - kev Wasn't just them. It's on the right in the Oxford (and my old A35) And the Sun-tor was an umbrella one! Like that on the Amazon too! Best place for it - passengers can't see when you've forgotten to take it off, or when you choose to do handbrake turns ;D

its not all good though is it? For some completely unfathomable reason, the sprite (and midget) has the handbrake on the passenger side of the (rather tall) tunnel, so you can't reach it in a hurry, or at all if you have a passenger you arn't already intimate with.... Actually, I've got another one. every morning this week, without fail, I've tried to put the key for the granada into the air vent on the dashboard

yeah i tend to activate the ABS when mildly braking in a moderner car. also tend to stall them trying in vain to find the clutch bite point! find myself pressing my ear to the dash at junctions or blipping the throttle to see if it's stalled. i also drive with big hand movements that exaggerate the PAS and end up driving really slowly because i can't fathom how i'm supposed to feel anything and get scared of brake failure and things. really useless when driving a new car - old cars though - don't lend them to me

not so much a retro symptom but i do find myself driving very slowly over speedramps in cars (read my dads high riding nissan primera estate) which arent lowered.....people look at me very oddly when I'm gritting my teeth and driving over them at less than 5mph....

- I leave long braking distance gaps. I leave long distance gaps, but its because of the fact that the CVT is trying to always drive at 15mph, even with the foot and hand brakes on ;D.

when i drove my mums skoda fabia i think i put the clutch pedal through the floor stamping on it, way too light for my liking, that goes for the steering aswell, all over the road. and as a matter of fact the engine noise, or lack of. i drive a k reg(92) mk3 fiesta quite often and it took me a couple of months to get used to not hearing the engine on that one, although the steering is worse on that than mine ;D

also tend to stall them trying in vain to find the clutch bite point! find myself pressing my ear to the dash at junctions or blipping the throttle to see if it's stalled. Ditto - no low down torque in most modern petrol cars so I often stall the things. I also find the clutch and accelerator pedals in SWMBO's VW Lupo much heavier than the Amazon (obv not the brakes as well, but that's because the Volvo's servo was been binned years ago...)

I do the whole far too heavy braking thing, and also the indicating by turning on the wipers! I also almost crash all the time when it comes to parking, as the difference between a fiesta and imp's steering lock is crazy, I forget you have to turn the wheel twice as much and the steering still isn't as sharp!

After driving my galant that has more swing on the brake pedal then mum's nissan tida I stood it on it's nose when I had borrowed it the other week. The thing is so light to drive and you can't hear the thing till it's doing 5k.
- You can drive around a corner, shut the door, change gears and not stop talking to the person in the passenger seat.
- Slamming the door when you get in/out (after a bad experience with a corner)
- Checking you always have jumper cables, water and oil in the boot for that one time you'll see them (this week)
- With an auto you put it in drive, wait, and then fell the thing drop into gear with a thud and off you go.

Like most of you, I leave longer gaps, and have frequently indicated with my wipers. I've also reached for fifth when driving the van.
But I know never to try and get my back end out on a roundabout when driving my Astra!!
