Nice install indeed! I did a slight upgrade to the original stereo in my Mk1 Polo by adding a second speaker which sits in a little box in the dash tray, it made it slightly better I also have a Sony tape headunit that I slot in there when I need something more than just MW/LW... An iPod in a Derby... how modern! ;D By the way, I'm highly jealous of your glovebox lid, must be a luxury model!

Small Form Factor PC in the boot, to be honest. Running a media PC linux distribution and 3x300Gb Hard drives for some of my music collection...First mod I'll be doing to the interior Best thing is, you don't need a visable amp and head unit - much easier to make it a stealth installation. *n PS: Death to 6x9s!

Interesting... I've thought about a PC in the boot before but haven't looked into it. How much for a titchy PC? Or the components - I can happily build it myself

That sounds really cool! Haven't a feckin' clue what it all means but..... that does sound great! Forgive my computer Ludd-itis but is that some sort of in-car hard drive / MP3 player type thing?

It'll run on a 500-800MHz Intel PIII - can pick one up for 50 sheets (if that...) If you want to go all-new, a mini-itx (good site) system isn't that expensive - a couple of hundred quid... Just make sure you don't use a Creative soundcard. Check out mp3car and the bit-tech forums. alternatively, buy one I'm quite liking the idea of buying a Mac Mini and using that though...Tiny, easily hidden, can use a USB or FireWire audio interface to get decent sound quality... *n (can you tell I'm a PC-audio geek? )

It's an entire PC running in your car. Fit a wireless networking card and you can park up and use wireless access points (posting on retro-rides from your retro ride? ;D) Can also fit a monitor and watch films if you wish... *n

WOW!! Now I'd love to do that ;D. I need to have a laptop in the Merc anyway to tune the MegaSquirt system, so maybe in the future I could tie it all up together - just go in the boot to tune my car, download music and post on retro-rides!!! ;D ;D ;D I think I'd have to get something slightly faster than the Toshiba 75MHz beige thing I use at the moment though!!

Have the monitor mounted on a bracket so it swings out from under the dash. Cut-down keyboard for space saving. If you're only using a media PC, you can do fine with just a numberpad. All good *n

(can you tell I'm a PC-audio geek? ) Errm Yes! I would have fitted a record player if it wasn't for the fact it would skip I've always been a bit dissapointed with compressed format music - I tend to hear what we've christened 'space-monkeys' in the background of recordings A mate of mine who is running his own car audio business has been looking into mounting a PC in a car to run not just ICE but also more normal functions like Alarm, central locking, climate control etc etc. To a degree many modern cars have a central CPU from which everything works already. The same mate took the Stereo out of his brother's Jag X type which promptly rendered all other functions useless - you couldn't even start the car! BTW; Cheers for the comments on my stereo - I thought i'd post some pictures as I seem to remember a thread some while back asking about where to fit speakers & I though some folk might find what i'd done interesting.

Try ripping your CDs as Ogg Vorbis - it pisses all over MP3, to be honest. An MP3 is a 'lossy' file - the first thing it does to get filesizes down is to strip out 'unnecessary' frequencies...unfortunately, when the track is decoded, these frequencies are reconstructed from datat either side of them...giving the 'space monkies' you've been hearing. That's why I opted for an iRiver h-140 - it will play mp3, ogg, wma...just about anything. 40Gb, 16-18 hours of battery, will take winamp playlists (score!) and was just over 200 sheets delivered. Listen to it through a set of Beyerdynamic DT931s and love every second. Love how seamless the install is in the car Going for a sub to bring out the bottom end or do the footwell-mounted woofers do the job? *n

If I get another head unit I will get one that also has bridgable rear outputs to run a small sub direct - which i'd place under one of the seats. For car use i'm sure the iPod is perfectly adequate in terms of the unit and the format but using the the tape connection is definately affecting the input. Yeah i've heard good things of the iRiver stuff, a friend has one that plays films - unfortunately I was drawn to the mini iPod almost purely on aesphetics & design Those headphones look rather tasty - I rather fancy a decent pair of cans

That was me, and I still haven't got round to sorting it out - next on the list is to cure the windscreen leak, so that it doesn't rot out the new floor, or for that matter, drip water into the speakers! Looks good, and a very neat installation too. Talking of speakers, are freestanding / pod ones (ie one bolt or similar) available for use in cars? I want to mount them on some kind of hinge, so that when my car is parked, they can be pushed out of sight under the dash.

am a bit of an audio junkie myself, and am quite liking your tidy install, i like to keep everything hidden just for security mainly - i like using standard speaker positions, but i like how you have managed to fit your woofers without cutting panels. has your head unit got a switchable source ? ie tuner/tape/cd-md? or fm/am/cd? as i made a lead for my brother in law to plug his personal minidisc player into his old sony stereo going thru the cd changer input on the rear (just some phonos with wire going to a 3.5mm stereo socket i mounted in a blanking plate) may work for you too? i would consult the manual first tho, altho should work if you have a source button (and cd option without actually having it) feel free to ask me also Space monkeys is something i have experienced - i have found the solution to be highter bitrate mp3 tracks i usually go for 128 and above. seems to get rid of them

For best results (if you must use MP3), use CDex as your ripping program, the LAME codec and variable bit rate with 192Kb/sec as the baseline.
