Heyyyy, Been brandishing the MIG a lot this week on my crispy crab. Started off with this: Next I stitched in a small piece to join up the front wing: That went quite well so I made a 'former' out of a ball-pein hammer held in a vice and made a piece to repair the rotten section of the front valance. I scratched my head a lot because this is a fairly complex compound curve and all I had to make it with was some hammers, but it turned out OK eventually after a lot of banging about: After adding a couple of small pieces to fill gaps it looked like this: Next there was a funny box section thing behind the front panel which had started to go, I repaired it: Then closed it off: By now it was looking pretty decent: This is the view from inside the wing, needs a good clean up, prime and underseal: Bit more to do round the headlamp bowl but that loks pretty straightforward. All in all a pretty satisfying outcome. What next? Well i have got some new seals for the brake system so next week i will try and get the brakes working, at the moment the M/cyl is empty apart from some green sludge in the bottom: Also I have ordered some schrader connectors for making a hydrolastic pump, if they turn up I will have a crack at that, looking forward to seeing it sat at the proper height! I hate to see these old BMC buses with saggy hydrolastic suspension.

Always like the 1800 for some reason - there's a bluey-green one that parks in my hometown sometimes.
Massive inside, aren't they?
And it is possible to fit a transverse-mounted V8 in them (not easily, but it can be done - see Doris the mini on v8mini.co.uk).

Decided to try and revive the brakes on this crab last night. The master cylinder was seized, so I took it off to put some new seals in it. it was minging: How do you get the plunger out of a seized up m/cyl? I tapped it free and pushed the plunger down the bore. Then I cleaned up the bore and tried to get the plunger back out again by clacking it off the workbench. It was coming out extremely slowly then didnt seem to want to go any further. I used lashings of WD-40 and after a fashion I noticed that the 'clacking' treatment had started a small hairline crack in the ally casting, knackering the job 100%. This caused my pi$$ temperature to approach 100degC, so I did the only thing I could think of and put a hammer through it: and got the mig out again instead. template: metal: clamp: weld + grind: next:

so I did the only thing I could think of and put a hammer through it: Yeah, but did that get the piston out? Looks like your master cylinder is an angled one like the original Herald ones but with a big jar. That straight one you're getting should be fine but you'll have to keep an eye on the fluid level more often - we ran a straight one on the Herald for the clutch for some years. Top work on the wing! Its that kind of fast progress I'm really hoping will start hapening for me soon.

dunno if anyone's ar$ed about an update from my shed but here is one anyway. So, last time I had smashed up the brake master cylinder with a hammer. A quick appeal on here located a new one off forum member '71 bug slug'. It was not quite the right one as the fluid resrevoir is too small, but it did fit, had the right bore and allowed me to at least bleed the brakes and see what else is going on: what I found when this was on, is that the back brakes both wazz fluid out the cyllinders, so a new set of seals for those is on its way. Next I decided to tackle the hydrolastic suspension. For that, I had opportunistically bought a hydraulic hand pump off ebay ages ago, here it is: It cost around £50 and came with a 5-foot long hose but no connection on the end. The right connection is this thing: A Schrader low-loss unit. Now these cost £50 off eBay, or £35 plus shipping and vat off Schrader them selves, so they are not cheap. Eventually I found someone in the states selling em a fair bit cheaper and bought a couple. With a thread adaptor from Pirtek I was in business, and pumped it up to the right height in about 30 seconds!!!! Very satisfying! My first car when I was 15 was a morris 1100, and of course the hydrolastic went flat. When you are 15 and skint and live on a remote hill farm this is not an easy problem to solve! It led to TEH MEGA TEENAGE FRUSTRATION with not being able to drive my car so now at the age of 33 I am glad to have cracked the problem of deflated old BL barges. Next, I decided to do some more welding as I had not done any for a day or two. I started off with this hole in the sill: I then splashed £40 at machine mart: And got started by taking the back seat out, where I found this revolting item: WTF is that? It seems to be some sort of mouse nest. Anyway it was pizz wet through and stank to high heaven whatever it was so I have put it out the way where I cant see it, and will deal with it later. on with the welding: gotta be honest i'm a bit disappointed with the old metal folder. It gives a nice sharp fold at the ends, but the bit in the middle is pretty wooly, it must be flexing during the folding. Its better than bashing stuff about in the vice though so i'll just have to get over it. decent eh? The other side sadly seems to be a bit worse: So I have ordered a shonky Hadrian panel rather than try and patch this lot. These 1800 sills are quite complez with a central membrane that joins to the outer sill half way down, not sure how i'm gonna make a neat job of gluing it all together but i'll work it out when I chop off the old sill. Out of all the tat thats flowed through the house of plums, this is the one I'm most exited about. not that i love old bl motors by any means( before you all start shouting, ive had a fair few and theve always been a bit pez in a lovable way). however ill quite happily drape myself over the bonnet of this and give it a hug ;D

Great progress, plums. That folder is like the one I picked up. I've only used it to do small bits so far and seemed to work well on them. How about welding some box section across it to stiffen it up?

Very interesting, especially since you always choose project cars that I haven't seen any articles about for ages, let alone a restoration!
