You're the third person to buy that car off of eBay! It appears to be in pretty good nick though.
I'm not sure if it is worth the trouble of going to a Holbay Head cause you then need to change the pistons to keep the compression up, and the inlet ports are smaller so you are basically restricted to the factory twin weber setup unless you fabricate a manifold for bike cars. The Holbay also has a different cam grind.
I'm pretty sure Dave Vizard did an article on porting the stock alloy head that will allow it to produce about as much power as a Holbay.
If you are interested I think I have a twin stromberg inlet and the matching carbs. I've also got the matching exhaust manifold but you'll have to wait for that until I have my recently acquired Sceptre engine swapped into my minx.
I also know someone who has a bunch of bits for these cars, such as OD gearboxes, and possibly a heavier duty antiroll bar.
PM if you are interested.

Bit of a bargain in my book, the winning bidder changed his mind and the seller offered it to me at my high bid but we did a deal and I got it for considerably less than my original bid. The mechanical (engine/box) upgrades are for the future when I have a garage to work in. For now it'll be wheels/tyres and a few other bits as money is getting tight again! MRABODY: I'm interested in any bits you may have access to but I cannot find the PM section on here at the moment! Feel free to email me at: bazzateer@hotmail.com Cheers guys Baz

The Sceptre has a different face with twin headlamps and grille and IIRC it has the o/d box as standard and Twin Strommies. The GLS had the Holbay head and some variants may have had twin 40s (but I may have dreamt that!). I think the Sceptre often had a vinyl roof too along with (probably) a slightly better dash with a tacho?. Here's a Sceptre from last night at the Ace This is all from memory so don't take it as Gospel. Baz

The Holbay engine which came in the GLS and the H120 had the following changes from stock.
Holbay specific head with smaller inlet ports and revised combustion chambers Holbay specific pistons (to bring the compression ratio back up with the large chambers in the Holbay head) Lumpier Cam Twin 40s Tubular exhaust manifold. Some also came with an alloy sump.
Other engine variants are as follows
Iron head 1496 (I think) came stock in Minx and Gazelles and later low spec Hunters Iron head 1725 was fitted in place of the 1496 in cars equipped with an automatic transmission
Alloy head single carb 1725 standard in Vogue, mid range hunters and fastback Alpine
Alloy head twin carb 1725 standard in Rapier, Hunter GT (and GL?) and Sceptre. Had different cam, and exhaust manifold to the single carb version.
Also, Alloy and Iron head cams don't interchange as they inlet/exhaust valve sequence is different between the two motors.
All 1967 Arrow range vehicles with the 1725 also came with the alloy sump, and probably 1968 cars as well. So your Singer should have one.

COOL!
a guy who used to work for us had a sunbeam alpine with a holbay motor on twin 40s; it sat for ages and ages in a shed up at our place after he had it resrayed; it got nearly complete and then he stopped. it must have been in there atleast 15 years. about 6 months ago we needed it gone and i had a nosey around it; it was rotten as a pair and the shed had no roof! what a waste.
a friend tried to buy it but he wanted silly money. its sitting on his driveway now under a sheet having been evicted; god only knows what hes going to do with it!
i like the sound of the nice period tuning parts and mods on this!!

Madge took me to Wales and back this weekend including a trip to see Brian and collect some wheels/tyres (cheers Brian ). 700 miles in all and she went really well until about 8 miles from home in London when the clutch gave up. Looks like the slave has gone but I'll probably change the master too, just to be safe! Baz
