Thinking about a general lowering/uprating of the suspension. Like the supple ride so thinking of thicker anti-roll bar, uprated shocks/strut inserts, and maybe 2" off the rear plus 3" off the front. I'm after any suggestions as to how to achieve this with as little monetary outlay as possible! I suppose lowering blocks on the rear will cover that end plus some uprated shocks (where from ). At the front, uprated inserts (again, where from ), thicker anti-roll bar and lowered springs. Poly bushes all round. Basically I need to know what can be done, what bits do I need to buy and where from. Any help/advice gratefully received. Baz

I've looked for all the suspension stuff you mention - can't find any info anywhere lol. I'm going to convert to coilovers on the front using a rally design weld on kit. I'm going to have the shock absorber piston machined to shorten it, then try and sort something out to stiffen it a bit. Will also poly bush, and for the anti roll bar will have to measure whats on there and try and get something to fit of another car, or buy a spare and clamp 2 together. For the rear i'm going to de-camber the leaf springs, fit lowering blocks, a panhard rod and traction bars. I want mine to drop about 6". However for just 2" you could just fit lowering blocks from rally design. I really like how these rootes cars look but parts are a pain in the to get. Matt

Are Avenger front struts interchangable with the Hunter ones?

I'm hoping to measure up the standard ones and see which ones fit, I'm pretty sure they can be made 'bespoke' as well. Maybe someone like Chris Witor can advise?

As far as I know Avenger struts are different.
Spax makes struts and rear shocks. Superflex sells poly bushes. Sceptres, Rapiers and possibly high spec hunters have thicker antiroll bars and stiffer front springs. Rapiers have four leaf rear springs and estates have four or five)
I have a friend who picked up a factory front strut brace on eBay. We would like to get it reproduced so let me know if you are interested and how much you would like to pay.
On my Minx I intend to do the following in the near future. Fit some reconditioned heavy duty front struts I picked up off eBay (there is a guy in Sutton, Surrey who sells them from time to time so keep a lookout), replace the front bushes with the polyurethane ones, fit the thicker anti-roll bar, and some 4 leaf rear springs. I'll use the heavier duty front springs but cut one coil off of them.
You may be able to use front coils from other cars. I have an avenger that has front coils from a 2.8L Capri swapped onto the struts.
In any event, coils and leaf springs are relatively cheap to have made up.
If you are interested in getting the polyurethane bushes maybe we could band together and do a group buy. My friend may be interested and he has two cars, so that would be five sets in total. It might save us a little money.

sorry to jump in here guys! we have a place up the road that makes poly bushes - deflex - they are a little tricky to deal with, but when I get the hunter struts off, I will go up and match up the poly's he has to the hunter - should be looking at aroung 15 quid for the front I reckon! do we think just cutting the coils on the front and blocks on the back would suffice for CHEAP lowering??? - 2-3" - kev ps - baz have some twin carbs and inlet for an imp - make me a cheap offer???

Hi Drew, Interested in the strut brace - would like to pay as little as possible The uprated shocks/shortened h/d front springs and h/d rears plus thicker arb all appeal to me too. Realistically I'll probably do the arb and shocks first, springs last. Baz

Drew, May be interested in a group buy of polys. Kev, Sounds interesting, let us know if/when you get a firm price? Re the twin carbs etc: Thanks but no thanks mate, I'm going to fit a single fat SU and eventually do bike carbs. To be honest, unless they've been recently reconditioned those twin carbs won't fetch much (assuming they're the standard Strombergs). Stick 'em on the 'Bay mate............. Baz

I'm interested in a group buy. I've also found a place that will do me a custom grind camshaft so all the bits to rebuild the engine are nearly sorted.

A friend in The Imp Club ( www.theimpclub.co.uk) has a Hunter estate. He could be interested in a group purchase too. Kev, see if you can get a price for all the bushes, inc the anti-roll bar? Keep us posted! Baz

A complete set of bushes from superflex (lower control arm bushes, tie bar bushes, antiroll bar link bushes, and antiroll bar to chassis bushes) is £67.92 shipping. I will phone them once we have a firmer idea of how many sets are wanted and see if I can work a deal.
Bazz, do you need any Imp bits as well?

Cheers Drew, I think I'm OK for Imp bits at the moment (although some spares were stolen a few weeks ago ). I'm just fitting electronic ignition to LNK (the white Sport) at the moment - hopefully then she'll get an MOT. LYH is the red one, she's a long term project for which I've lots of plans. Have a look here www.theimpclub.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4030&highlight= for info on these cars. If you're planning on getting rid of any Imp bits let me know - I may have a need for them . You should get on the Imp Club site, it's a good one. Hopefully I'll be re-locating most of my spares to a new lock-up on Sunday - may even have room for LYH! Then I'm going to concentrate on getting LNK MOT'd. Once that's done I'll sort out Madge (the Vogue) with new clutch master and slave cylinders before fitting the new wheels and tyres. Baz

I didn't mean imp bits generally (haven't got any extras except a couple bumpers), but poly bushes. Seems to me if we are ordering a bunch, might as well get everything we can and hopefully get a better deal.

In that case I'd be interested in a price for two full car sets for my Imps and one full car set for the Vogue. Just hope I can afford it all!

Baz,
A compete Imp set of bushes comes to £123.36. However that is for both front and rear, and also includes the inner tierod bushes for the steering rack which add almost £40 to the price. That price includes VAT whereas, looking at the pricelist for the Hunter bushes, it would appear to not include VAT. I'm definitely planning on ordering a set for the Hunter and the front bushes for the Imp. However I have contacted Superflex to see what type of savings we can get on a group buy, so if it saves me money I'll buy the rest of the Imp bits as well.
Drew
