Until recently the Mercedes 200 was my daily. Then I had a shunt and decided that instead of sticking a new wing on and giving it a lick of paint, what it REALLY needed was a massive V8 engine. As you do. Mods so far include: K&N Air filter Electric fan conversion 16 inch, 8.5J cross-spoke alloys 225/55/16 rears, 215/40/16 fronts Toyota Supra leather seats Powerflow sports back box Lowered 2 inches at front Re-shaped front end I'm currently in the process of rebuilding a 4.5 litre Mercedes V8 I got off of eBay for thirty quid (with gearbox!). A head gasket had blown but I have this unquenchable desire to take stuff apart anyway, so this was a good excuse. ^ Soon after I got the V8 home. It's a bit big. Whilst rebuilding the engine I decided to ditch the K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection for a Megasquirt programmable EFI kit (a kit I still have to build). I have most of the EFI parts now, I just need an assembled engine to put them on . I must be a glutton for punishment, because once I got into thinking about the advantages of mappable fuel injection, I started looking into turbocharging. The 4.5 has a relatively low 8.5:1 compression ratio, so I should be able to run a fair amount of boost. With forged conrods etc as standard, the engine is pretty much indestructible so it'd be rude not to really.... Originally I wanted twin KKK K14 turbos as I had a couple lying around, and the manifold fabbing wouldn't take much. Then I found a Garrett T25 which got me thinking about bigger, single turbos..... and recently I found a huge Toyota CT26 turbo which I've decided to fit (unless something bigger / supercharger-like turns up...) ^ Garrett T25... rejected in favour of a CT26! I will update progress for anyone who's interested. So far: Bodywork is still all mashed up (still too cold for that malarkey!); the V8 is stripped and ready to be cleaned and rebuilt; the ECU is still in its original packaging 'cos I'm scared of screwing it up!

This must be the most eagerly awaited project on this forum.
I can't wait to see it on the front cover of Retro Cars

Oh christ! I was stressing before about getting it finished, but now....!!! ;D It's nice to know you guys are interested! It'll spur me on to get it done. I'm aiming to get it finished by the end of May, although funds are ultra-low at the minute so things have been on hold. Should be getting moving quite soon though! If anyone has experience in soldering / electronics / MegaSquirt kits, I could do with some pointers! Never done any soldering since school and I don't wanna mess this one up!

**Update** Gotta give a big thankyou to ScrapingScrap for this... Took a trip "dahn sarf" to Mr Scrap's place as he has a Merc V8 in his garage going spare, and was happy for me to take whatever I needed before the engine was chucked. After stripping my engine I found one camshaft was badly worn, and I was getting stupid quotes for a second-hand one (new Kent cam territory! ) As well as the camshafts I got a whole load of other parts I needed, which has saved me an absolute mint and really got the project going! Also painted the block matt black ;D

:)Thanks for the kind words! Now currently bricking it as it's almost spring and the engine is still in bits (although they are mostly nice clean bits at least!). Still have a massive long list of jobs to do.... never mind.... one step at a time! ;D Have rebuilt the turbo so I know it should be OK. Having a lovely time stripping threads, breaking spring compressors and getting mortgage-sized parts prices from Mercedes. Ah the joys! ;D

Just an update with some pics! I was out on the lash last night so some nice gentle photography is all I can manage right now! You may notice my...errm... ecclectic use of other manufacturers parts . So far I have used Ford, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Nissan, Vauxhall, Skoda, Fiat, Lancia, Audi, Daewoo, Mazda, BMW, Citroen, Renault and Austin Rover parts, plus a load of other stuff of "unknown origin" ^ Inlet manifold and throttle body assembly. ^ Stripped, cleaned, rebuilt and painted block. God knows how that flimsy table frame is holding it up!! ;D ^ Toyota CT26 Turbo with Garrett actuator. Stripped and rebuilt.... it's a big curse word! ^ Lancia intercooler should keep the charge nice and dense. It's a good sized one too. Getting it off of the car wasn't much fun though! ^ Giving me mucho aggro at the minute - the cylinder heads. Currently building a custom valve spring compressor to get the damned valves out so I can get the heads skimmed! So things are progressing, all be it slower than I want. Still have to build the Megasquirt ECU and off course bolt the whole engine together and get it in the car. Before RCS. Aaaaarrrrrgh!!! ;D ;D ;D

Well, I managed to make a valve spring compressor . It consists of some mega-thick steel bar and some six inch nails.... I'll take some pics soon as I get some batteries! So the valves are out at last! Just have to extract the guide rail pins (a b@stard of a job ) and the heads can be skimmed. I have to crack on with it all if only to stop me making silly V8 sound effects in my garage! Also been practising my soldering techniques (well, trying to actually acquire some technique is more like it!). I bought a cheap hobby kit from Maplin to have a go on, but it actually serves a purpose in itself as it's a delay timer circuit for the interior light. But my conclusion is: soldering's easy! Next: The MegaSquirt kit

Did you get the injectors sorted? Well, I'm still confused with those Nissan injectors - I might take one to the dealers and see if they can identify it for me. But, as it stands I'm going with the Jeep / Chrysler 238cc injectors, fed by a Jaguar XJS V12 fuel pump through a BMW 850 filter! Probably will go easy on boost until I get bigger injectors as these will defo start to lean out at 280bhp, but they'll do for now. Doing the bodywork today as it's sunny for once! I hate bodywork . I'm gonna contact the mags once things get a bit more together, as at the moment it's just a heap of parts!

Trivia help:
I remember a film a while ago where the bad guy drove a stack-light merc with a monster v12 in it of some description...I saw the film about 8 years ago and it appeared to have been made in the seventies...
Anyone know what it was?

Hi from OZ,Ihave a 114 same colour as yours but i i'm concentrating on putting the 3.5 i have into a W111. It's a bolt in fit and as the Germans say" it's a leggo job'". I have a mate in the US who has Merc Turbo,a 116 450SEL 6.9 ,i'm watching your progress as it's pretty unique. This's a pic before he pulled it down to polish it up.it was built in the 70's from new car and cost $50,000 ...just for the conversion. The car was $100,000 on top.

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.
