Welcome to Retro Rides mercmad! 3.5 W111 sounds so cool! And it's a bolt straight in job - that's even better!! ;D It'd be cool if you could post some pics of your project (we like pics! That 6.9 turbo is crazy!! Those $$$ figures scare me though! I'm looking at about one thousandth of that price on my project ;D I notice he's kept the K-Jet injection system - something I considered doing but I couldn't work out the best way to go about putting a turbo through it. Plus, I've always wanted to do a MegaSquirt fuel system and it seemed a good opportunity! ;D Got all the parts I need now apart from the head gaskets - people are quoting silly money (what's new?!), so the search goes on for someone who doesn't multiply the price ten times because of the three-pointed star!

Hi,re head gaskets,What we do here is get a laser cutting firm to make them from copper sheet.Real cheap ,usually only the price of the copperand you can get several made for the cost of one Merc. item. As you no doubt know, the copper can be softened and used again and again. And also ,theres left and right hand gaskets in the 116 .This's the W111 I'm going to fit the v8 into.I bought as an unfinished project.it runs buetifully but the two prev. owners pulled it apart and started the respray.it's an original black car,so it's going to be black, but i can't make my mind up wether to leave it as black base or finish it and put the clear on.The engine etc i have came from a 109 300SEL so i have air suspension TOO! 8-)PS is there a way to put pics direct from my file to here rather than use the big size i get from using other sites?

I love that W111, especially in the matt black! I started painting my 115 matt (well, satin really). If it were mine I'd leave it like that - looks so cool! And how low is your 114!? That's gotta be on bags or juice surely! If not, I gotta find out how you did it!! Oh, and there isn't a way to post pics directly from your PC onto here . I usually re-size them and have them hosted on somewhere like photobucket.com. e28boi - there is logic to the Merc numbering system up to a point.... 200 is a 2.0, 350 is 3.5, 450 is 4.5 etc., but the 6.9 litre S-Class is still badged a 450 . I don't know why this is!

I got the 114 for free!,it's done 75,000 miles from new,has all the usual things, cental locking, air,Aussie spec tint, thats original by the way ,no rust. I got it for nix because the PO had cut the coils so they were 5" long. ;D when i lifted it up ,the springs fell out... and then he got put off the road by the cops. It was impossible to drive like that, the front wheels fouled the guards and where it's parked in the pic ,i got bellied driving on the street, the rear wheels couldn't grip because there was no weight on them... ;D ;D.It's such a nice car I'm going to keep it for a while. I've fitted 115 springs which are softer than 114 items and this makes the car sit a lot lower than stock. I've got a set of period AMG pentas (16x8) for it so it might look OK. Have look at this site , on the left hand side of the screen go right the very bottom and you can access the pics of his hydro suspension. 216.239.37.104/translate_c?hl=en&u=http://www.low-mercy.com/index2.html&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dhttp://www.mvconline.de/%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DG

I love that low-mercy site - some really cool Benzies there! I can't believe you got your W114 for free!!! The guy must've been crazy to cut the springs that short!! Copper gaskets - I looked into this a while back, cos it'd be useful for lowering the CR even more so I can cram in more boost ( ), but a lot of people have said that copper gaskets are always blowing . I've heard good and bad things about them, but taking the heads off the M117 engine is a real pain in the and I could do without having to go through it all again! ;D I'll ask a laser cutting place what the cost would be to cut some. The cheapest quote for a Mercedes head gasket I've had is £56. The other side was even more! I mean, a gasket is a gasket whether it's going on a Bentley or a Ford - I just can't justify paying all that for a simple part When you had some copper gaskets cut, did they just use an old one as a pattern? Or do you have to make a pattern from card or something?

The copper gaskets can be cut from any thickness gasket, try measuring the old 4.5 gaskets and get the size you need from a copper sales place (does that sound right? ) and yes,you just get the old gasket and they use it as a pattern.Very quick and simple, they cut wood and everything in the place at the end of my street. I use copper gaskets in my hemi because it's got 13-1 compression, and just blows out the felpro ones i was having to import from bushmerica. Copper is softened by heating to a dull red and quewnching in cold water,i can do it everytime i pull the heads and never have a problem. On this hemi thing,i met a guy years called Skip Readio who built a hemi in the late fifties and used gasket material they use in nuclear power plants,it's self curing and sticks permanently, you must grease the head surface but let it stick to block where it will remain forever. He has never had to pull the heads in over 40years !! Here the hemi,

You absolutely HAVE to put it on bags when the engines up and running! And before the show preferably too! ;D

street - I really wanna bag it, but I have to take things one step at a time!! ;D Got a compressor and if we can source those solenoids you were saying about we'll be half-way there! Modifying the instrument cluster now, to include rev counter instead of water temp / oil pressure gauges (which I'll mount elsewhere of course! ). Also in the middle of replacing the clock with a turbo gauge - much more useful!! Pics once it's finished. Building the Megasquirt ecu. Got a set of brand new plug leads and dizzy cap for £10 (quoted £90 from Euro Car Parts!!) off eBay (where else?!). Also a set of 8 spark plugs for a tenner, which would cost me twice that normally! ;D. I love eBay. mercmad - I'm gonna enquire about getting some copper gaskets cut. Looks like the way forward, and I'll probably increase the thickness of them to reduce compression (more boost more boost!!! ;D) How much do you have to heat the copper? Any special techniques / tools I need to use?

Afternoon from the land down under...heating the copper is easy but you need an oxyset or a M.A.P gun so it can be heated to a dull red all over, thats easy,I hang mine up on a wire in a little box made from firebricks ,to keep it out of the drafts. You need a bucket of water big enough to fit the gasket in ,depth or length doesn't matter just as long as the whole gasket goes under water in one drop. Heat it up,then as soon as its that nice dull red all over drop it straight in the water, swish it about to cool it quicker and it's done, ready to serve.Just call me jimmie Olives. ;D it does'nt matter if it gets a bit twisted because once it's soft it will bend to fit perfectly.

Right, well I've been to a sheet metal place today to price up some copper. They're wanting £10 per sq ft ( ), and that was just 1mm thick stuff (which ain't thick enough). Add to that what the laser cutting people will charge and things could get a bit pricey... however it might still work out cheaper than ordinary gaskets and I could lower the compression at the same time. I did source some sheets of exhaust gasket material which I was pleased about, so I've been making the zorst gaskets today too. Work? What's that?

Down here, copper tends to be cheap because our country is full of the stuff, albeit mined by "forreners".But i stiil think it's got to be cheaper than Merc gaskets, but have you enquired about the price with some of the "generic' parts companies?. Here in OZ there are 3 different companies that sell merc parts that are made by mercedes' suppliers but are sold with out the Merc name on the box, usually about a third the price. Having too many old mercs makes you a bit tight with the cash So i have to do a lot of ebaying (at the moon ;D)and shopping around to get the right bits. Try looking about for a 500 SE igniton systym, the dizzy will drop in and you will get billions of volts and no points to stuff up your day. ;D

Thanks mercmad - I've had a bit of an ask around about non-Mercedes gaskets but usually they say no straight away - I think many of them just can't be arsed to look! I will keep trying though, I just know there's someone out there selling them for reasonable amounts of money! About the ignition system - mine has the breakerless dizzy cos it's a later one (it's from a 1979 450SEL). Is the 500 dizzy better still? I got an ignition module from a W126 (unknown model), but the connections are all numbered the same as in the W116 manual so I guess (hope!) it's the same part...

Ahh! same dizzy !,no problems then ;D,they kick like a horse so watch your leads are solid core and the ends are proper merc ones, the cap ends and the plug ends have the resistance so putting on carbon string leads is not a good idea. Moved my 220 around the yard today,i need to find a buyer for a mint 220 six cylinder engine and trans....

Thanks for the tip on the leads - luckily I just got some genuine Merc ones cos I was gonna go for silicone leads! Glad I didn't now! How is demand for Merc engines and stuff in Oz? I've found things don't really shift that well in the UK... on eBay at least . I'll have a good 2.0 four pot and manual trans with 93k miles up for sale soon too (although it's looking unlikely I'll have the V8 for the Retro Cars Show in June ) I'll try my best though!!

Greetings Mercedes220. It is hard getting parts isn't it? I will have an engine and box available soon, but as for body parts, the chassis is remaining quite stock (at the moment) but if anything comes up I'll let you know! Sounds like you have an interesting car! That's the white one with the red bench seats in it isn't it?! Love to see pics of that!
