My mrs once made the mistake of telling me I could have any vehicle I wanted so long as it can fit on our driveway. two years ago you may remeber I had a 79 Unimog whihc turned out to be a little bit too agricultural. So after selling my Landcruiser recently and not doing many miles with a 4x4 I have found this gem in Lancashire.
1975 Volvo C303 TGB 1314 6x6
First registered in Sweden in 1977, this medical AT truck was imported to the IOM with one other C303 back on November 29th 2006 by a Peter Henry. The pair of trucks were then purchased by Fred Cheshire of Lancashire in 2013. This C303 had the IOM plate LMN-230-N. It currently sits on 13,500 KMS.
Powered by a Volvo B30 straight six petrol engine, driven by a 4 speed ZF gearbox with 2 speed transfer box, portal axles and three locking diffs. The truck runs a 24v battery system.
Although Tax and MOT exempt, it has had an MOT to register it in the UK and passed with no advisories on the 01/06/2022.
The sale of the vehicle included a number of spare parts such as 2 new hub seals, brake cylinders, brake shoes, two spare wheels and tyres as well as various filters.
Work carried out in the UK since 2013 includes:
• Bottom of door shuts cut out and rebuilt
• Bottom of windscreen cut out and rebuilt
• Rust treated on camper body
• Fuel tank repaired
• Chassis cleaned, no rust and oil treat along with cab
• Brakes refurbished with Land Rover 11” parts
• Propshaft checked and greased
• Diffs and gearbox oil checked
• engine serviced, new oil, filters plugs dizzy cap, electronic ignition Acuspark (12v) through a 24v to 12v reducer, carbs serviced

I always liked those; what are your plans with it? Really just some green laning, pay and play days and a few local shows a meets I expect. Nothing crazy just always fancied one. I will either have to down plate it or do my C1 licence as I am only 33 so no grand father rights. But it has been MOT'd here as a Class 4 Van and not a C1. Either way the rear cab will come off and will just put spare wheels and recovery kit on the back.

Class 4 is just mot, you can have that on an 18 tonner, still need a C licence to drive it ! Sounds like someone has had a camper mot on it instead of hgv.
There is no "C1 mot" .
Even if that cant carry 3.5t, I'd bet it weighs almost that easily, a 5t sprinter for example can only carry 2.3. Its on GVW not carrying capacity.

Even if that cant carry 3.5t, I'd bet it weighs almost that easily, a 5t sprinter for example can only carry 2.3. Its on GVW not carrying capacity. It weighs according to the vin plate 3260kg on its own. So minus the rear cab and the internals it would have had I would have said an easy 400kg off that. It was MOT'd in preparation for UK registration by the previous owner, but my aim is to have it classified as such that it sits under 3500kg (MAM) and therefore classified as historic, tax and MOT exempt. I am in the middle of this now after exploring various areas. I am about to receive an email from Volvo Trucks Uk stating that the max load weight for my chassis code in particular is 3500kg. It has to be taken into account that in the 70's it is likely that all 6x6 C303 of this shape would have had a blanket weight plate no matter what back end they were carrying. A number of owners with the same model as mine have successfully UK registered using the same letter but from Volvo Trucks Sweden. So it is a process that has worked before.

You may need to chop the roof of the cab down also as it could be too tall to fit along many lanes as they tend to end up with overhanging branches and trees the height of land rovers, it will struggle looking at it the way it is. Great project.

Great project. I have been doing lanes for over 17 years so have a decent idea of what I will be able to get down or not. Luckily the lanes here in Wiltshire and up in mid wales give plenty of opportunity to enjoy something this big. Will just be taking a saw or two

Love this thing
You may want to check as chassis cabs are usually plated without any additional bodywork. With this being military i'm not 100% that will be the case but its definitely worth checking.
I used to drive arborists trucks and few people realise just how little weight is left on a 3.5t. We weighed a transit tipper and it came in at 2900kg without any tools, people or load.

My thoughts on military trucks was that they would just weight them at whatever the maximum is they would carry with the heaviest back end they would fit, in this case a mortar carrier. Will await UK reg docs to see if DVLA were OK with my letter from Volvo Trucks UK.

Where in Wiltshire was that snow? Down here near Stonehenge we got 10 mins of powder, just enough to turn the ground white, but no where near enough to go and have some fun 🙄

With regards to the GVW of this vehicle, with the container now removed, you have already identified the fact that it is light on the back end. Therefore, some form of ballast will more than likely have to be installed. With the cover over the engine/transmission; spare wheels; some form of roll-cage; the weight is steadily increasing, and achieving 3.5tonne GVW disappearing over the horizon. I must say that I think that the response from land-owners seeing such a vehicle trundling across their land, may well evoke an unwelcome response. Is there an legal definition as to what vehicles can or cannot use green-lanes? Nevertheless, still a nice vehicle, but not without potential problems re licensing and the attention of VOSA.
