Right, the dash has taken a back burner till the winter and the varnish to harden so it will flat back nicely....... mainly because I tried very hard to remove the top of my left thumb and have been grounded from the garage for 2 weeks for the stitches to come out. Soooo, what have I been doing apart from sulking, apart from booking holidays, I have been making lots of enquiries about alloy front hubs for the Dolomite range, there are some available at some serious amount of wedge, according to Mr Shoey, Ford ones are only bearing away from fitting, and they are about 75% less than the sprint ones, and I'm trying to find out if there is any carryover from Vitesse to Dolomite for hubs, as many kit cars used to use triumph derived suspension, Why do I want new hubs?. the wheel I think I want to go with, are 100mm pcd, triumph are 95.4, technically its easy but I'm running out of Flange, if I move them outwards less than 3mm its very close as stock stud splines are already starting to expose themselves from factory, I want bigger brakes on the car, so bigger wheels are needed, the Dolomite/Toledo platform, although is RWD because it was derived from a FWD platform it uses FWD offsets the stock PCD sort of limits my choices to some quite horrendous wheels, not much option without the pcd change stock 13" dolly wheels some others I have acquired that I think will fit the bill, and I have them with a 6 & 7" stagger Very reminiscent of Mk5 Cosmics, I'm chuffed......

After much debating, internet searching, and brainstorming, I have found out a lot about triumph front hubs and what will swap with what, my front suspension is Herald based, but not identical, alloy hubs are available for the herald and GT6/Vittese, and from what I can find one for the Dolomite/Toledo, which is only available in Ford PCD?? and really expensive a bit more research came up with GT6 alloy hubs Undrilled.... still expensive but doable the problem now gets to the BL parts bin I can fit these hubs, but I need to fit GT6 spindles/stub axles, which unbolt from my hubs, ok,I'm liking this, look a bit futrther and the downside is a 20mm increase in track, dosent sound much, but stops me fitting the wheels as they will foul the wings, and I still will need to strip the rear axle of half shafts, remove the undoubtably tight taper fit hubs, hoping not to destroy the shafts or hubs in the process, thatsassuming theres enough material to redial them, now I'm thinking is this worth all the effort, enter an old friend, CNC machinist, with "I can redrill those for you" I had discounted this because of the closeness of the 100pcd to the 95.25 would compromise the machining and end up with unilugged wheels and I don't fancy that on a 4 stud, (I know its only 2.75mm) So, now, my wheels are been fitted with Oversize steel inserts, knurled interference fit and shrunk into the wheels then redrilled to 95.25mm, Happy days. Now that problem is out of the way, I will get the car ready for a show that I love, check the oils,I have never checked the gearbox or diff, I know this car leaks like the Tory Canyon (showing my age now) theres a tiny leak on the engine, which is the crank sensor, the input shaft on the diff is a little wet, and the gearbox is decidedly moist, engine oil is OK, so up went the car on stands, pulled the diff filler and I got a wee dribble, so I wriggled down to the gearbox, found the filler plug, which was accessible, BUT its needing something I don't have any more, a 17mm Allen key, when I retired, I left my heavy stuff with a mate, anything above 14mm in hex keys went to him, try buying one locally, £37.00 for a Allen key!!!!! mmmm and then I would need to cut it down to fit into the tunnel, Time to compromise, went home, got a 8mm bolt, double nutted it really really tight, and with surprise, the plug unscrew without an issue, not so lucky with the oil level this time, I stick my little finger in the filler hole, not even a touch of oil, tootled down to local factor and bought some oil in a squeezy bottle, pulled the plug out of the bottle expecting a fillerpipe to be there, nope, nuffink, could I buy a big syringe locally, could I fook, the gearbox too 500mls+ that must be one hell of a leak somewhere............

Ginetta re-drilled the Spitfire and GT6 triumph hubs for both 4" PCD G15 and 4.25" PCD G21 - Pop Brown was also a go to for re-drilled Triumph hubs before the Alloy options became popular. Ginetta did the re-drill by plugging the old holes first and the drilling for the Imp or Ford PCD.

Sorry I have borrowed this, Thats how it was Sunday, and this is Tuesday Jenveys, direct to head, its the start of the winter rebuild, all the wiring is I think OK as the setup came off a working XE powered racer, lets see how my luck runs The wheels are on the back burner for now, had them redrilled and they fit Luverly, the rears are as tight as I will run, but look the nuts, fronts fit well too, go to fit the rear on the other side, and its sticks outside the wheel arch !!!!!, seems the axle is not central by about 20mm, centralised the axle and now neither wheel fits, theres no meat in the wheels to take a skim off the back of hubs, so narrowing the axle 30mm is on the cards, but lets get the other planned mods done

Working thru the few issues I have with the car, nothing but minor ones, the first was how loud the engine is when on the beans, No air filters on 45s is always going to be a bit loud, there is absolutely no space for filters on the Webers, so the plan is to fit a filter, the injection came with a lovely oiled filter, so in mockup mode with the injection I trial fitted the filter, it was a squeeze, but it fits between the wing and ITBs win win, .... of course not, fits nicely, BUT sorta plays peekaboo with the bonnet, Now I have ordered a foam filter, On paper, is going to fit, the way my luck is going it will end up being another garage ornament The tailpipe was angled upwards, and could be construed as noisy, its now got downturn and much better for it, thats mainly for 6am outs and upsetting the neighbours, Too much..........

If you relocated the expansion tank to say the space in front of the suspension turret could you not make that filter fit?

If you relocated the expansion tank to say the space in front of the suspension turret could you not make that filter fit? The filter issue is that it sits 40mm higher than the bonnet line, and I aint cutting holes or making bulges I have been thinking about moving the tank to the other side of the bay, but all the pipes that run into the tank are on this the current side, its a lot of work for little gain,, I might look for another style of expansion tank or make one from scratch,

It certainly looks like it sits 40mm higher because it's being forced up by the expansion tank. You could just unbolt it and pivot it out of the way to check if it solves the clearance issues or not.

The Filter actually clears the tank, not by much, but does clear, I do have another expansion tank, but needs to be modified to work correctly, going to pop it down the welders tomorrow and see if its feasible, I cant do it as the tank is ally....

There has been a modicum of success with the air filter, I have been searching all over the place for a Filter and backplate for a set of Jenvey Direct To Head ITBs, NOBODY stocks them, Never seen a set mate was the normal answer, so, with a heavy heart I called a well known injection company, knowing they are a touch expensive, Yes, we can do one of those for you sir, despite there not being one on their website, Next day a foam filter arrived, not a cheap item at nearly double the equivalent Pipercross filter, ....... Errr no Backplate Bumhats, called the aforementioned injection company, oh no, we sell that separately, £££££, can I have one please, OK, we will need to have one made, it will be a week or so and we will charge you more because we have to make it, It arrived this morning with paperwork describing it as a QED backplate, and a small refund because they had one in stock, I fit the backplate, it took a bit of time as its a bit fiddly, unpacked the foam element emblazoned with logo across it only to find it says PIPERCROSS inside, I think I paid for a name here, but its on, and it fits, fitted another expansion tank to give me better airflow and clearance needs to be finished, also been around the engine replacing gauge senders that don't seem to be the right ones for the instruments, new thermostat, orderd a new rad and fan too just for good measure, but all in all, I'm happy with how the filter fits, and it clears the bonnet I'm also having second thoughts about running a swirl pot as I can mount the injection pump just below the bottom of the tank and the swirl pot is quite intrusive inside the boot space

The Saga goes on with the car that keeps giving, Well, the last few weeks I have been playing Fuel injection, The fuel injection is a pre owned unit using a older type ECU, DTA pro400, pre set for a C20XE similar to mine, I was going to put the ECU inside the false bulkhead, then I noticed the ECU has a bit that says this unit is not waterproof, BumHats, so now the ECU must logically be mounted inside the car or at least in an enclosure, OK its going under the dash, this sort of makes sense if you have been following this saga you will know the dash is going to be changed, for a more user friendly one, Now in my mind I don't really do two jobs at once, so I'm not keen on pulling the dash apart before the ECU is all up and running, but I do need to get into the ignition and starter circuits to wire in the ECU, time to put on my Big Boys Pantsand take some deep breaths............ First job I suppose would be remove a couple of auxiliary gauges, so I have access behind the dash, well I wasn't disappointed, 2 gauges, one of which is a capilary oil gauge, I was enthralled to find a sea of brown wires, yippieeeee... now I can get my hand behind the dash to get the speedo and tach out, these are both aftermarket animals and have simple plugs on the back, Now all is revealed, I think I may have my work cut out, I'm not liking what I'm seeing, including a previously undiscovered/unsorted bonfire,

Funny how we’re all so different.
I genuinely enjoy sorting wiring.
Some of the other stuff that people here willingly jump into fill me with the horrors though.

Glen I'm not too bothered about the wiring, but that is a bonfire waiting to happen, how far do I have to cut it back to get to some "Honest Wiring" I don't know, But, I do have a spare dash loom thats not cut as far as I can see, obviously some additions would need to be done, Might need some pins for the back of the Tach plug as it should be driven off the ECU

Well it dosent look much better with the dash out, a somewhat character building experience getting it out, My gyno degree was well earned today, tomorrow will see a flurry of cutters, big and small, and a nest of wiring entrails on the floor, my hope is most of the extra wiring is logically tagged on to the original loom and the original loom is not too bad, we can all dream,

Its been a funny night, our dog, who mostly sleeps under the bed was up and down stairs all night, so I haven't slept well, what with the dog, dreaming about wiring, and WTF am I going to do,so I got up, well, I now know why the dog was restless, downstairs was pooomagedden...... so I sorted that, but was WIDE awake at 4am, time to plan my assault, studying my pictures, and studying a bit more, a lot of the wires have just been badly extended, But it seems, according to my trusty old and Lucas wiring colour coding chart and looking again and again, Hopefully, I can see most of the original wires that I need,
