My Kryptonite is idleness. I need a project in my life, but was struggling for space and finding something interesting enough for cheap enough. Thus, last weekend, whist browsing, like you do, I saw a vehicle I'd never seen before. Reminded me of a Suzuki LJ80 or, dare I say it, a J40 land cruiser, both of which I coveted, but couldn't afford. Much googling, and agreeing a price with the seller and it's been delivered today for a very reasonable price and great service by toad transport in Wellingborough (Shiply, so no affiliation)
Brought unseen as it was a way off, but the last car I brought after crawling underneath it required loads of welding which I didn't see, so don't ask me to look at any cars for you.
Had an hour with it. First impressions are that the chassis is solid, I mean it looks like it's about 3 years old. Underside is generally good, found 3 rust holes in the wheel arches and I wasn't holding back with the prodder. Roof, on the other side is paper thin and a bit of digging revealed some holes. Body, overall solid, quite a bit of filler I suspect, needs redoing, but not a disaster. It starts, runs and is MOT'd. It's obviously been restored at some point in its life, homemade scuttle panel, chopped back and homemade wheel arches, but I like it! Only had a little bimble in it, but it's hilarious to drive, big balloon tyres + lifted, feels like a clown car.

Plan was a rolling resto, but I've started off like that before and gone over the top! Quite like the blue under the bonnet, think this would go well with a white roof. I'll get the bodywork sorted, perhaps learn how to do proper sheet metal work + go over the running gear. It's already been converted to discs up front, battery light is on, but it's charging? Came with 4 X new tyres to be fitted, just wants a bloody good sort out really. Few minors on the mot which are weeping shocks, frayed seatbelt, oil leaks and a corroded brake line, so all easy enough

I like these tough little Daihatsu Taft's. They were reasonable popular back in the day. Toyota sold them as the Blizzard. www.facebook.com/Blizzard.fan.page/Parts might be still available here in Australia. Cheers

Sold in Germany (and elsewhere) as Daihatsu Wildcat, in Austria as Pionier.

Really like the look of that, is it tiny Kei engine size or does it have a proper size lump in it?

Had a couple of hours on it this morning, jet washed the oily bits, then got it in my garage and had a dig. Started with removing all of the guff in the rear, overall pretty good, obvious repair panels including the inner arches which are just flat panels, so drum a bit. Next I went onto the roof. It's had a replacement second hand skin, pretty thick with filler round the edges and there are maybe 8 areas which require cutting out. It's also a bit misshapen, but it's well above eyeline, so not really noticeable. As far as I see it I've got 2 options. First is multiple individual patches, joggle the edges and use panel bond instead of welding which will warp the roof like crazy. Second - I know of a very talented panel beater locally, who could make a new skin or even just the main section, obviously not cheap, it would be the right thing to do on something more valuable, bit could be overkill on this. I'll mull it over. Maybe the first option, with option 2 a possibly for the future?

Original engine I think. More digging. Removed the front 'valance' the bit with the holes drilled in it, turns out it's fibreglass, so that's good. Also got one of the wings off, also fibreglass and a very good gob of filler, also fibreglass inner wings 👍 Only small problem is that the flared arch is steel and it's starting to rust. It's bolted / bonded to the wing and was additionally welded to the sill! Couple of patches to do and a fair bit of surface rust, but not too bad. Seeing the flared arch has got me thinking again of the bolt on flared arches that you can buy, might be a good rust free solution without trying to remake something in steel. Also noticed the puddles underneath weren't drying so drilled a hole in the sill [/img]

Something like this? It's never going to have original arches, but not sure if these will be too out of place?

Little drop more work done, it was smoking pretty bad, so I had a go at re-timing the diesel pump which has seemed to help no end. Just smokes like a normal old diesel now, when bleeding the system it was clear that it's been filled with red diesel and this if of an unknown age and quality, so when it's eventually back on the road a bit of decent pump stuff and a good run should work wonders. Had a proper session on the same underside with my most powerful pressure washer Lance, so that should make it a tiny bit more pleasant to work on. This is my first ladder chassis vehicle and it's been great unbolting the front panel work. Front bulkhead needs repairs on the outside edges, which should be fairly easy with the access now available. Also chased a fair bit of filler down the drivers side sill, it's obviously had a homemade sill and the rusty metal is actually wet under the filler, passenger side looks like it will be ok.

Bonnet is going to take some work. Might look into getting it dipped? There is also something weird going on with the windscreen. It's just bonded onto the frame instead if a proper rubber seal. I think the frame has been messed with, looks ok from the outside but the lip on the inside just isn't right. The screen will come out in due course anyway, so thats something to look forward to. Been searching around for arches, any that look like they'll work are located in Indonesia and they won't ship to the UK, but it's probably fair to say that I'm some way off that stage yet. Think my next purchase is going to be some sheet metal + maybe a bead roller

That's got more filler than one of those US Custom shop rebuilds you see on TV.
It will be an interesting resto, haven't seen one on the road in an age, thought they'd all dissolved away.
