Technically, this still gets in as its just before they facelifted it and they started production in 1997 soooo....
If you follow my ph1s thread, you'll know back in 2019 I bought a 2.2ttid 9-5 estate as a cheap runaround/work horse.
Love that car, it gets ok mpg, cheap to run, super comfy and I don't mind it getting used.
So obviously I had to go and get carried away wanting a new daily that costs more and is less practical
The advert came up as a suggested thing on facebook marketplace, it was cheap and not too far away.
Got chatting to the owner and decided to go view it
Was more work than had been advertised, probably just through me being pretty thorough when looking over the car rather than the seller lying. Just don't think hed noticed.
Made a low offer but he wasnt happy with it, so I walked away
A week passes... I cant stop thinking about it, doing research on all the issues I'd found.
Next thing I know...
complete with a boot full of stuff.
Auto, heated leathers, sunroof (pretty much the selling point for me) 250bhp out the box, easy to get 300bhp
And a list of problems as long as my arm
Problems that I can remember/have discovered on the journey
TCS light on permenantly
ABS light comes on over 70
oil leaks coming from everywhere
transmission oil leak
brake fluid black, brakes feel awful
kocking from subframe bushes and dogbone mount
AC not working
Radio not working
broken rear spring
knackered shocks
curse word vac lines
parking sensor issue
Where to start
A small part of all the bits I've had to order for this thing...
Both front ABS rings replaced and drivers side CV boot was split, so banged a new one on.
The loveley engine oil coloured brake fluid
Flushed the fluid with ATE Type200 fluid
Brembo max discs (got them cheaper than standard) and brembo pads up front, left the rears as are
Also chavved up the brake calipers a bit
Snapped rear spring just gave me an excuse to het new shocks and lowering springs
obviously, this simple task didnt go to plan
2/4 bolts snapped drivers side, 1/4 snapped passenger side
trying not to drill them out, but them being right next to the filler neck
got there in the end though
sachs OE aero shocks and Eibach 30mm lowering springs.
Subframe off to swap all the bushes for poly
Started on sorting the gazillion oil leaks
1st up, sump drop
Nightmare of a job after I'd put subframe back on, if only id done it with it off.
Anyway... found something nice on the pickup and in the bottom of the sump
Common for the pickups to clog up, not so common for them to be full of metal though.
Praying its nothing serious, couldnt see anything obvious top or bottom so ignoring it until it blows itself to bits probably
all cleaned up
Everything changed to hopefully sort all the oil leaks:
O rings on the pipe in above picture
sump re-sealed
copper washer on sump plug
entire new PCV breather system
oil pump O ring and crank seal (front)
oil pressure switch
timing chain tensioner seal and O ring
cam cover gasket
dipstick O rings
