Hi, I have long been lurking this site, and admiring the remarkable work you guys do. This is my my first post so please bare with me. I’ll start from the beginning of my obsession with cars. When I was 12 years old my father gave me a 1970 Fiat 124 BC to keep me out of trouble, he was well known in the Fiat and restoration world and won a few shows with his cars, in particular with his Fiat 124 CC. He did all the work himself including body and paint work. This is a skill that he taught me from a young age. 124CC and my BC

After 12 or so month, the fiat made way for a car that I regret selling to this day. A Ford XB hardtop GT replica. I sold it and bought a Mk 2 RS2000 that I unfortunately don’t have photos of

Then marriage and 5 kids put a hand brake on my car building obsession.......until now. My kid are grown up now and were looking at the cars I had built over the years (4 boys) and I thought, curse word it I’ve got one more left in me. That brings us to the Torino.....kinda. More to come.

I picked up a 1986 Ford Falcon S Pack, that was a one owner and proceeded to tidy it up and was going to put the 450hp crate motor I picked up from the states into it. I also rebuilt a C4 auto to stage 2 specs backed by a 2600rpm stall converter.

Just before I was about to start the V8 conversion a 1970 Ford GT matching numbers 351 Gran Torino came up for sale around the corner from me, noting they are very similar to an XB hardtop, it had my attention.

And a bit of horse trading later (straight swap with the Falcon) the Torino was mine.

It’s a dry Texas car imported in 2015, so rust is minimal. Plan is to put the 450hp create motor in the Torino and restore the body. It came with a complete new original interior in boxes right down to new door cards, seat foam and covers, carpet, dash, hood lining, badges, arm rests, ect ect. I’m going with this colour scheme,

The body is also remarkably straight. I have started the body work and will post progress pictures shortly.

First area I decided to tackle was around the rear window which are prone to rust. After stripping the surrounding area I only found one small hole on the left hand lower corner. Using a wet towel and a sheet of MDF to protect the rear screen I welded in a small patch panel. The rest of the of the panel was mint, Next I moved onto the lower rear 1/4 panel that had 2 small pin holes, I cut away until I found fresh metal to weld a small patch to.

Love this look. Subtle, but a hint of menace. Wheels do it for me.

Thanks Grizz it was a tidy unit that was not over the top. The wheels were slightly staggered with extra dish at the rear.

Next I removed a small but long dent along the rear 1/4, I took the panel down to metal around the dent and removed the dent with a paint less removal kit and a light skim of filler. I try to do most dent work like this to not over work the metal. I do use a hammer and dolly sparingly when needed though. Someone painted over the original light yellow ivory paint with a cheap white enamel years ago that has protected the original paint quite well. I’m taking the damaged areas down to bare metal, repairing it and and feathering in the repair with the 240 grade paper completely removing the withe enamel exposing the original paint, then giving it a good dose of high fill. plan is one all the dents have been removed using this process I will remove all the trim and block the whole car with 240, then give it another hit of high fill and block it back again with 400. The sills were completely rust free and straight. I did plug weld the holes for the lower trim that I am removing though. the holes in the 1/4 panel below the GT Badge are for the gills.
