Evening everyone. The start of another project that has been mentioned in some of my other threads but we’re at a point we’re things are actually gonna start now. Bit of background story on this. My dad has been involved in triumphs since before I was even born. He’s restored a few spitfires, gt6’s and heralds with a few concours wins. In turn I’ve been brought up working on and restoring them with him but always to original. I’ve always wanted to modify one and play around with a few things. 15 years ago he bought one as a parts car. It was a green mk2 bought off eBay for £150. Unfortunatly the seller forgot to mention the roof had been hacked off. Anyway it was brought home and stripped to replace some unobtainable parts on the almost finished project. The chassis, shell and panels were put outside and covered up under a tarp. Now I’ve always had it bookmarked for a kind of restomod project. Well after years of the thought of doing it things have finally aligned. The garage is 99% finished, dad needs the space and I need a project to keep me sane. So Friday 20th November 2020 I put the the pieces back together for the first time in 15 years.

So got the shell sat on the chassis and the best bonnet we had.
Next was to get the doors windscreen surround roof and tailgate fitted back on.

The idea is to get the shell welded up and in primer then concentrate on the chassis and running gear. I’m gonna use the gt6 suspension, steering but go for a modern engine box and diff. I’m 99% certain that it can be done without having to cut or permanently alter the chassis or body shell. The body will be finished off as a period racer. Blacked out chrome, a original colour, banded steel wheels and a stripped out interior.
The Saab b204 rx8 box and diff seem to be top of the list so far.

Well this is lining up to be a great build. Definitely on board with the plans for the look of it.

When I read the intro I hoped you were going to keep it as a roadster but I guess it's just a spitfire if you leave the roof off so may as well put it all back together seeing as you've got the parts.
In for updates, good to see some triumphs being given the treatment lately.

Am also in. When I saw the first photo of just the bonnet I thought "He's got a fair bit to go" Like your way of thinking.

Certainly a full-on resurrection....... Looks like you have it under control though! Pleased you are putting the roof back - not a GT with no roof. Tub doesn't look that bad in the pics apart from the roof - or does the camera lie? No opposition in principle to running gear mods (especially gearbox and diff which were unfit for purpose in the first place), but a couple of observations. It's a GT 6, so a Saab B204 is two pots down and will sound sooo wrong. I rather like the idea of the Ford/Mazda 2.5 V6. I tried an RX8 5 speed in a Spit/GT6 chassis a couple of years back. Not without severe hackery it won't. I'm putting an MX5 NA box in a GT6 at present. That's not easy either, but it will go without any chassis mods and not too much tunnel chopping. Another one suggested by a friend only this morning is the Toyota/Subaru GT86 box. Toyota W58 will definitely go too (have one in my Vitesse) but not cheap (or even reasonable) any more. While the RX8 diff looks reasonable in size and form... ratio choices seem to be 4.44:1 and 4.77:1 which isn't ideal to say the least. Subaru/Datsun/Nissan R160 and R 180 are the usual swaps though Sierra has been done few times too. Watching with interest Nick

In for updates, good to see some triumphs being given the treatment lately. We did think about making a macau replica with hump on the rear deck. The only problem was to either make a full panel that we could fabricate from scratch or weld a spitfire boot lid shut. The full panel was beyond my skills as it would need to curve in two opposite directions to look right. And while you can find boot lids to weld in you cannot find the rear deck panels from behind the seats to boot lid. Putting the roof back on seem the best move but will through up a few issues in itself. Mainly head room. I’m 6ft 2 and it’s snug. Probably going to have to drop the floor down where the seat sits to gain a inch and use a aluminium bomber style seat.

People who have been there and done it. Fully agree with the 4 pot / 6 pot argument. The only reasoning behind the Saab engine is my mate has been fitting these in to assorts for at least 10 years. He’s currently got a corsa b running 500+ bhp and Audi TT dsg gearbox and four wheel drive. Another theory was if I could get the engine far enough back it would help with the handling as be a better weight distribution. I will be keeping a open mind regarding engine box and diff tho. Main job for the time being is welding, grinding and then more welding. The camera doesn’t lie it just sugar coats it so to speak. Sills inner sills are solid. Bulkhead is 90% solid. Really the main areas are two floor pans which I need to pick up and a rear panel/ valence that I’ve already got. Rear arches have been repaired before but I’m not overly happy with them. Think il cut them out and make rear tubbed arches them the option to run wider wheels is there too.

☝🏻 Now I really like that idea and have spare bonnets with bulges. Mmmmmmm 🤔

How about a couple of gurney bumps in the roof like gt40’s for a bit extra headroom
Now that would make it a proper gt car
Edit .. just realised that’s what some else said .. oops

Can relate on the height. I’m 6’3”, though mostly in the legs and skinny. I worried about fitting all through the build as I don’t fit at all well in my sons Spitfire unless the the roof is down!
The key is the seats. Son’s Spitty has MX5 seats and even much modified they are too high. The factory seats are fine. Dropping the floor a bit would certainly help, but the floor is quite near the road already.
